drawings, photographs, and many coloured folding maps. A most useful
19th century reference work that provides untruncated biographies, among
other things, of notables that barely are mentioned in late 20th century
reference works. A solid, attractive set with modest wear on most edges

edition. Folio, 202 pp. plus Contents (at rear), 3/4 maroon calf and
marbled boards, marbled endpapers, uncut, t.e.g. Illustrated with many
black and white (and one coloured) plates engraved by the publisher and
printed in Paris. The Ermine portrait of Elizabeth is included. The
frontis portrait is missing, replaced with a tipped-in sheet of inked
holograph appreciation to a Mr. A. D. Duthie for his visit and "kind
services" to Dennistoun U. P. Church, Whitehill Street, Glasgow, dated
January 21, 1897. This biography of Queen Elizabeth (1533-1603) includes
the remarkable events of her reign, among them the failed attempt of the
Spanish Armanda to invade England in 1588, and the careers of Francis
Drake and Walter Raleigh. A near fine copy with minimal internal foxing,

5. Cunningham, Allan. THE ANNIVERSARY; or Poetry and Prose for
MDCCCXXIX. John Sharpe, London, 1829. Small quarto (6 1/2" x
10"), xvi, 320 pp., with 20 steel engravings including First and Second
Presentation Vignettes, frontis, Vignette Title on second title page,
and 16 others, all tissue guarded, t.e.g., other edges uncut. Half red
leather and black cloth, red endpapers, gilt rules on both covers, gilt
title and date on ribbed spine. The edges, covers, and spine are rubbed,
top spine corner beginning to tear, most of the engraved plates are
foxed on the borders, two front leaves are partly loose. All in all,
still nearly very good. Allan Cunningham (1784-1842) was a Scottish
poet, biographer and man of letters who moved to London and became one
of the best-known writers for the 'London Magazine'. THE ANNIVERSARY is
a charming and entertaining example of the literary "annual" popular at

with gilt on cover and spine. Unopened, 185 pp. plus Index. There is
mild offsetting to four front blank leaves and the title page caused by
a folded newspaper clipping laid in, dated December 22, 1933, of the
obituary of Sir Henry Dickens. There is slight wear to the corners and
spine ends and a small bump to the top front cover. The top edges are

Brock. One of 250 copies of the large paper edition. Small quarto (7" x
10 1/2"), xxxi, 236 pp., in maroon cloth, white spine label, edges
uncut. A very good copy with slight spine fade, slightly rubbed spine
label, modest wear at corners and spine ends, unavoidable offsetting on
front and rear endpapers. Thomas Hood (1799-1845) was an English poet,
humourist, and editor of periodicals. He was friends with Charles Lamb,

series. Pedigrees of landed families. Illustrated with woodcuts of
arms and seals, bookplates, and signatures of the various families.
(viii), 320 pp. including large Index of names. Quarto in half-vellum
and grey cloth, gilt on spine, teg, other edges untrimmed. Heavy
offsetting on the two, front and rear, free endpapers, corners bumped,
covers soiled, torn vellum has been repaired, several leaves of the
Index show faint waterstain on the lower corners. Previous owners'
(both men of the cloth) bookplates inside front cover. The binding is

(1824-1907) was a Scottish missionary who went, in 1858, to minister to
the cannibals in New Hebrides. The graphic and thrilling narratives of
