YIDDISH JUVENILES FROM THREE CONTINENTS.

A small selection from stock of Yiddish juveniles in honor or Yom
Kippur[with thanks to my colleague for the idea]. It should be noted ,
however that these were all the products of presses which were
staunchly secularist, some, indeed, followers of Zhitlowsky, who
believed that the Jewish ethnic group could achieve continuity
through the Yiddish language and litereature, without religion. For
those who need them, I have included a few quite rare, early primers.

1. Anderson, H. Meises mit Ilustratsies, Di Shnei-Malach [Stories with
Illustrations, The Snow Queen] Trans. into Yiddish by der Nister.
Mexico City] Child-Literature Fund Shachna Kaplan, 1955. 12mo, 61Pp. +
Spanish TP. many vignettes. And full page illustrations. Only 1000
copies were published, as here , without dust jacket., VG/Fine. A
vanity publication, rather a bit late for the kind of distribuiton
envisioned. The number of Yiddish speaking children outside of
Argentinas and Mexico was very small by then and most copies were
pulped. It is a shame because it is a lovely and well produced book.
Not often the case when there were more readers. $150.00

2. [Aronson, Boris] Mazel, B. Beni / Kinder Roman [Benny a children's
novel] New York 1930, General non-party Yiddish folks shuls. 12mo, 156
[2]Pp. Num. Vigs. after B. Zeldn. Covering the front boards is a black
on gray abstract design incorporating elements of buildings and the
title. A stunning modernist design reminiscent of Torres-Garcia and
Mondrian. A Very Good copy. Rare. $400.00

3. [Children's Theatre.] [Boris Aronson, Illus.] Sholom Aleichem:
Chanukah Gelt, Kinder-Shpiel In Drei Stsenes Frei Instsenirt fun I. D.
Berkovitch. [Chanukah Money, Children's Play in Three Scenes, Freely
adapted for the Stage by...] Farlag Matones, 1925. 12mo, 32pp.
modernist decorative wraps, two 2 FP illustrations of stage sets + 10
Vigs. showing characters in costume, East European Jewish shtetl
types. Aronson's first theatrical publication in the u.s. later, one
of the most innovative and successful american stage designers.
unnoted in Aronson's biography/monograph. fine. $500.00

4. Budiak, Yiur.: Mein Kelbele [My Calf] Freely translated from the
Ukrainian by I. Ravin. Illustrated by I.D. Leouis, White Russian Govt.

2Pp. Ads], Litho. in color throughout, Pict. Clrd. wraps. Bound into

writer. Very early American Illus. Yiddish juvenile. The Arts & Crafts
influenced cover uses a repeated swastika pattern in a huge I shape!
