BIOGRAPHY

1. Beer, Thomas Stephen Crane; A Study In American Letters NY: Alfred A. Knopf,
1923. 12mo. 248pp. 1st Ed. Intro. by Joseph Conrad. Probably the most collectable
biography of Crane (in spite of its inaccuracies), since it is the first. Scarlet cloth.
Extremities rubbed, bump to edge of front cover, binding somewhat soiled. Very
Good. $17.50

2. Benfey, Christopher The Double Life Of Stephen Crane n.p. (London): Andre
Deutsch, n.d. (1993). 8vo. 294pp. 1st British Edition. The first biography in more
than 25 years on Crane. Fine in Like DJ. $20.00

3. Klein, Carole Gramercy Park; An American Bloomsbury Boston: Houghton, Mifflin,
1987. 8vo. 330pp. 1st Ed. This book tracks the literary history of this part of
Manhattan. It gives some insight to Crane's time as a "starving artist" while he
struggled with Maggie and The Red Badge Of Courage. Also included in this account
are O. Henry, Nathaneal West, Walt Whitman, Edith Wharton and Herman Melville.
Near Fine in Very Good (browned and lightly edgeworn near top) DJ. $15.00

4. Baum, Joan H. Stephen Crane (1871-1900); An Exhibition Of His Writings Held In
The Columbia University Libraries NY: Columbia University Libraries, n.d. (1956). 8vo.
61pp. Illustrated. Original blue wraps with paper label. Arranged by Baum, foreword
by Professor Lewis Leary. A nice item for the Crane collector or scholar with 175 items
described, mostly manuscript holdings although some books, magazine appearances
and photographs are also listed. Stallman says of this catalogue, "This work is an
important bibliographical account of Crane's publications and of Crane's manuscripts,
typescripts, letters, etc" (pg. 412). An important item on the scholarship of Crane in
the 1950's. Some light wear to the wraps. Near Fine. $30.00

5. Starrett, Vincent Stephen Crane Philadelphia: Centaur Bookshop, 1923. 12mo.
46pp. Limited edition of 335 copies, this one unnumbered and out of series. Bound
in original blue cloth with paper covered boards, paper labels. Light wear at spine
ends. Lacks portrait frontispiece. One of the titles in The Centaur Bibliographies Of
Modern American Authors. This is the first bibliography of Crane (Stallman 310), thus
making this item collectable in itself. Very Good. $75.00

6. West, Herbert Faulkner A Stephen Crane Collection Hanover: Dartmouth College
Library, 1948. 8vo. 30pp. 1st Edition, limited to 350 unnumbered copies. Bound in
original red cloth. Ex-lib with the usual marks, pocket removed. This is the description
of the collection of Crane material which was donated to Dartmouth by George
Matthew Adams. Includes books, magazine appearances, short story collections with
Crane material, manuscript items, miscellaneous material, and material concerning
Crane. Stallman 369. Good Plus. $22.50

Aurora: Roycroft Printing Shop, 1896. Small 8vo. 48pp. 1st Edition, wrappered issue.
BAL 4074. Original cartridge grey pictorial wraps. Closed tear at bottom of spine,
rear wrap has some spotting, some intermittent foxing throughout. Still an attractive
copy of an elusive and desirable Crane item. Starrett-Williams 5. Very Good.

8. Crane, Stephen Active Service NY: Frederick A. Stokes, n.d. (1899). Small 8vo.
345pp. 1st Ed. BAL 4084. Original decorative green cloth. Light rubbing to
extremities, spine lightly faded, small tear to top of spine (1\4"), bookseller's ticket on
rear pastedown. A sound, clean copy. Hinges tender. Starrett-Williams 21. Very
Good. $100.00

9. Crane, Stephen Maggie; A Girl Of The Streets NY: D. Appleton, 1896. 12mo.
158pp. + 12pp. ads. Original buckram. This is the "obtainable" 1st US Ed, 2nd Issue
with the title page in Roman type. BAL 4075, Johnson's "American First Editions" pg.
128. The bottom corners are bumped (front bottom corner rubbed), spine darkened
and mottled, binding soiled, bookplate of "Howard Hendrixson Bromley" on front
pastedown, 2 stickers on front free end paper, lacks rear endpapers, some light
intermittent foxing. The ads are partially unopened. Starrett states that this issue is
the better issue because it is printed on a higher quality paper and it is harder to find
than what is now called the first issue. Starrett-Williams 8. Good. $125.00

10. Crane, Stephen Whilomville Stories NY: Harper & Bros., 1900. Small 8vo.
199pp. 1st Ed. BAL 4089. Original decorative green cloth. Illustrated by Peter
Newell with 33 plates plus portrait frontispiece of Crane. Binding is discolored with
heaviest discoloration on the spine. Some spotting to front free end papers & to the
table of contents. There is a small tear at the top of the front hinge. Starrett-Williams

11. Holton, Milne Cylinder Of Vision; The Fiction And Journalistic Writings Of Stephen
Crane Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, n.d. (1972). 8vo. 353pp. 1st
Ed. Discusses Crane's uses of various literary devices and looks into Crane's
naturalism and impressionism. Not in Stallman. Fine in Near Fine (pc) DJ. $20.00

12. Knapp, Bettina L. Stephen Crane NY: Continuum, n.d. (1990). Small 8vo.
198pp. One of the volumes in the "Literature & Life: American Writers" series. A
good biographical skecth and critical assesment of Crane's better known works. As
New in Like DJ. $17.50

MAGAZINE APPEARANCES

13. Harpers Weekly, Vol. 42, Nos. 2152 & 2153, March 19 & 26, 1898. NY: Harper &
Bros., 1898. Folio. 2 vols. Pictorial wraps. These two numbers contain Crane's short
story, "Death And The Child", in full. According to Stallman, this is the second
appearance, being the first American appearance (pg. 166). There are the usual ads
and illustrations (No. 2153 has a Remington illustration for the cover page). Both vols.
are browned along the edges, as is usual for these magazines. The spines are lightly
rubbed, No. 2152 has a 1 1\2" tear at the fore edge through the first two leaves, not
affecting Crane's text. Scarce. Very Good. $75.00

14. Concerning The English Academy The Bookman: A Literary Journal NY: Dodd,
Mead, March 1898. Vol. VII, No. 1. 8vo. 88pp. + 2pp. ads. This is the first
appearance of this article written especially for this publication (Stallman 165). Crane
is critical of the "English Academy", specifically the "London Academy". Apparently
they decided to have a literary contest and in the process rejected the following
authors work in 1897: Henry James (What Maisie Knew), Joseph Conrad (Nigger Of
The Narcissus) and Rudyard Kipling (Captains Courageous). Original light green
wraps. Library blind stamp and "B64" in pencil at top of front wrap, rear wrap has a
light scuff mark. Near Fine. $27.50

15. Little Regiment NY: S.S. McClure, June 1896. McClure's Magazine, Vol. VII, No.
1. 8vo. Original pictorial wraps. This is the first American appearance of "The Little
Regiment" (Stallman 191). The story is nicely illustrated in text. This number also has
an interesting section on the photographs of Mark Twain throughout his life. Wraps
lightly soiled, fragile at hinges but intact. Very Good. $45.00

16. The Monster NY: Harper & Bros., August 1898. Harpers New Monthly Magazine,
No. 579. 8vo. According to the recent article on Stephen Crane in the January 1996
issue of "Firsts", this is the first appearance of this important short story (see also
Stallman 197). Illustrated with 12 illus. by Peter Newell. Original pictorial wraps.
Some seperation along top of front hinge. Near Fine. $75.00

17. Young Blood--Stephen Crane Philadelphia: Saturday Evening Post, Nov. 18,
1899. Folio. Vol. 172, No. 21. This article on Crane is by Kenneth Hereford and
contains a profile of Crane while he was at Brede Manor (Stallman 272). Bound in
original pictorial wraps. Lower corner carelessly folded, top eighth of the issue is
somewhat wrinkled and has one closed tear measuring about 1 1\4". Some light
soiling to front wrap. Very Good. $22.50

RED BADGE OF COURAGE

18. Crane, Stephen The Red Badge Of Courage NY: D. Appleton, 1900. 12mo.
233pp. + 10pp. ads. A new and early edition, with a port. frontis. and a new preface by
"R.H." (Ripley Hitchcock, see Stallman, pg. 208). Buckram, red & black dec. One
corner bumped, binding soiled, text has some minor soiling in margins, inscription on
ffep. A collectable edition since the preface was written 3 days after Crane's death.
Apparently published as some sort of memorial edition. BAL 4088. Very Good.

19. -----. The Red Badge Of Courage NY: Pocket Books, 1942. 16mo. 159pp. +
8pp. ads. 1st Pocket Book Prtg. Color pict. glossy wraps. Introduction by Max J.
Herzberg. Nice cover art by William Allen Maxwell depicting Henry storming enemy
lines with fixed bayonet. Perma gloss peeling at back wrap near spine. Nice vintage
paperback. Stallman 208. Very Good. $10.00
