"To book-collectors, Gordon Craig will perhaps be best remembered
as the artist of 'that monument of the German private presses,' the
Cranach Press Hamlet. Devotees of the theater will recall him as the
son of Ellen Terry--an actor, avant garde stage designer, producer,
and the founder and publisher of The Mask. Born in 1872, he lived
for almost a century, dying in 1966 at the age of 94. During his long
life he exercised his varied creative talents, crossing back and forth
between the world of books, writing, the theater, and drawing and
printmaking. His book-collecting habits were physical characteristics
of books as much as their contents, and even when travelling he seems
to have always brought along a couple of hundred books.
"The Paris Diary was written at a time when Craig's fortunes were
at a low ebb. In 1932 he was living with Daphne Woodward in a cheap
boarding house in Paris, scraping by from month to month with very
little income and scrounging meals at local restaurants. The Diary
commences on November 16, 1932 and ends on Armistice Day, November 11,
1933. During the year he is kept going by the prospect of a plan that
is being promoted in Holland, which would solve his financial
problems. But all hope vanishes in October, 1933 when he is told in a
letter that the grand scheme has ended in complete failure.
"Within these twelve months Craig records his musings, comments and
criticisms on actors, writers, books and book-sellers, artists,
politicians, the state of the arts, the state of the world, and the
state of his digestion. He dreams of having enough money to hold a
grand one-week party for his book-seller friends; 'Those good book
fellows'...'the most likeable people I know.' He writes of his famous
friends--Max Beerbohm, Isadora Duncan, Count Harry Kessler, Lovat
Fraser and Gaspard Maillol. He considers asking Le Corbusier if he can
build a nice house and studio for him for £300... 'No harm in asking
Le Corbusier--but I don't know him yet.' He dismisses Charlie Chaplin
as a mere 'photographer's model' and criticises 'young Laughton...and
Gielgud' for not showing more independent spirits.
"This heretofore unpublished diary provides an intimate
self-portrait of a famous man living in Paris in poor circumstances,
recalling the days gone by and hoping for better things tomorrow.
Craig also gives us his views of the personalities and events of the

Once again, from the Brighton Press, comes an artistic creation of
landmark importance, in this case an autobiographical retrospective in
woodcuts of the noted American artist Harry Sternberg.
Born in 1904 of immigrant parents on New York's Lower East Side,
Sternberg took his first lessons in art at the Brooklyn Museum at the
age of ten. During the years 1922 to 1926 he studied at the Art
Students League where he was to teach for 34 years beginning in 1934.
His subject matter has always included social commentary, and in 1936
he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to study the coal and steel
industry; this resulted in a series of graphic works of great strength
and renown.
Beginning in 1957 Sternberg has taught at the Idyllwild School of
Music and Art, where he has worked collaboratively with Bella
Lewitsky, the West Coast's leading representative of modern dance, who
has written the informative Foreword to the present work.
Today, Sternberg remains active in teaching and lecturing, and
continues to work daily in his studio. His work is included in the
permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution, Museum of Modern
Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, Fogg Art
Museum, Hirshhorn Museum, The Library of Congress, and numerous other
prestigious institutions and private collections. The Brighton Press
