(Wall Street Journal) - The game of "telephone" is
transported to the wild African grassland in "The Jungle
Grapevine" (Amazon.com: http://xrl.us/Grapevine ), Alex
Beard's distinctive picture book for children ages 4-10.
Unlike the game as played by kids, who delight in purposely
misunderstanding one another as a message is passed from
one listener to the next, the animals here are trying their
best to get it right. The chain of confusion starts
innocently, when Turtle idly remarks to Bird that hanging
around the watering hole is usually good for a laugh, but
"lately the humor has been drying up." When the inattentive
Bird flies off, he can't remember exactly what Turtle had
been saying�was it that the watering hole is drying up?
