Ljubljana, 23 November (STA) - Writer, poet, playwright and translator
Kristina Brenk, who was best known for her books for children and as
the editor of the legendary children's book series "Cebelica" (Honey
Bee), died in Ljubljana on Friday aged 98.
Brenk epitomised Slovenian children's and youth literature for more
than half a century. Her most famous children's and youth work is
"Deklica Delfina in lisica Zvitorepka", a 1972 fantasy comprising 15
short fairy tales.
Her stories are based on her childhood, the life of her family and the
Second World War, while her plays also explore people's tradition,
according to the website of the Slovenian Writers' Association.
Brenkova, as she was known to her readers, also translated into
Slovenian some of the key works of world youth literature, including
Pippi Longstocking.
Brenk, born in a village near Ljubljana in 1911, studied psychology
and teaching in Ljubljana, and earned a PhD in teaching in 1939. She
worked as an editor for publisher Mladinska knjiga between 1949 and
her retirement in 1973.
Her many awards include the lifetime Levstik Award for children's
literature in 1980. In 2000, she made it on to the biennial "Honour
List" of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY). In
2007, she became the Honorary Citizen of Ljubljana.
