"It is not easy to understand what matters in what I write. I spent
years, off and on, writing a 'masterwork' novel with strong
autobiographical undertone. Now I think it a blessing that publishers
turned it down. On the other hand, a science fiction series which I
began in three books written in three weeks still rolls the money in
and still seems fresh, witty, and unpretentious when I reread it.

"I became bored with lecturing full-time and now write architectural
history. This I find an exhilarating change after relying on
imagination for so many years. I am, frankly, disenchanted with the
English literary criticism industry since it began to indulge itself
in pretentious terminology. Stones are more satisfying than theories."
