The easiest way to determine the gauge of your lobes is to hold a ruler
against them, find the measurement in inches or millimeters and then
use a chart to convert to gauge.
Hope that helps.

Adam,
You said "both lobes gauged," but it sounds like you're actually simply
getting your ears pierced for the first time. Do you currently have
your ears pierced?
The about.com link you provided offers, "Even if your ears were pierced
to a more standard size, you can stretch your ear lobe holes using a
gradual process that some people call gauging." This would indicate
that you do have your ears pierced and are anticipating or considering
stretching or gauging them.
Stretching is the preferred term by old school enthusiasts but gauging
is apparently becoming more acceptable as a synonym for increasing the
hole size of lobe (and other) piercings.
The general process involves waiting until your piercing has healed and
then increasing the size of your hole incrementally or gradually as the
about.com info states.
The typical Piercing Pagoda jewelry is 16 gauge. I currently wear 00
gauge posts, but I only stretched slightly as I had my ears punched
initially at 2 gauge.
My limited experience at gauging or stretching was then from 2 gauge to
0 gauge and finally to 00 gauge where I've maintained for several years
now.
My particular "general process" included wearing the 2 gauge tunnels
for many months and then simply sliding in a pair of 0 gauge tunnels. I
have fairly large lobes and the stretch was easily accomplished.
Likewise 00 gauge.
You may want to Google scalpeling as there are many people who simply
have their lobes scalpeled so they can wear 00 gauge or larger
immediately rather than gradually stretch from 16 g to 14 to 12 to 8
to...
Risks of skipping sizes, say 16 gauge to 8 gauge would include the
chance of a blow-out.
I was looking at the about.com page you linked to. It provides good
information from what I read. You may also be interested in the wiki
page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earlobe_stretching
As far as I know, you can select your own "starter ring" at the shop
when you get your lobes stretched or pierced. I've never heard of
studs/posts "jabbing into your heard," btw. And wrt to hoop/loop
earrings helping, I have seen a guy hang a padlock onto his captive
bead ring to help in stretching his piercing, but I think that's
unnecessary or a case of overkill. Ymmv.
Best of luck with your ear project, Adam. Please post a follow-up.

I had no problem skipping during the smaller sizes(I started from regular
earring holes), but as they got larger it was harder to skip. I could NOT
use a taper. I just lubed up the lobes and plugs and went for it. The worst
that happened was my lobe felt a little raw, but if that happened I
discovered that keeping a&d on it for a day and turning the plugs
frequently(gasp!! that's a RAB sin, isn't it!?), it was ok.
Marie
Now, some people's piercings do NOT close up. My lobes did shrink up over a
few weeks, and a normal earring would not even go through the hole. Now I'm
up again to a 0 or 00, I don't remember anymore. I've seen some lobes with
scars from being stretched. It's just different for everyone.
Marie
Mine at 00 gauge maintain a perfect "donut hole" when I remove my
posts.
Ta da!
Yes, it's one of my special talents.
I've thought about going larger, but I'm thinking that the lobe would
have that floppy, stretched out appearance if I did. Oh, yeah, I FEAR
the droopy lobe! ;o)

D'OH!
I'm a fan of judicious snipping, but the first bit should've read re

Yeah, fwiw.

P.S. And I didn't even have to use Google! (Well, I posted via Google

I don't want mine droopy so I haven't gone any larger. I used the pierced
holes I got when I was 4 or 5 years old so they aren't centered the way I'd
like, and I worry that if I go any bigger it will tear. Ha doesn't that
sound a bit dirty?

Just to stir the pudding . . .
Has Curt ever said what his art specialty was? Every art teacher I
ever had made sure we knew they were, say, a ceramic artist, or
photographer, or painter, etc. Has Curt ever said? Let's face it, his
ego is huge about everything else. We know all about that little
journalism class in the Navy. But his art? Nada.
And have you seen his schools website? Not one piece of his students
art. But we know about Curt. (Why DID they take his photo off the
site?)
Oh, it is an 'alternative' elementary school -- but why is the last
part of the mission statement education? Why isn't that first?
At least Foose Alternative School has STYLE!

All the art teachers were told that posting student art was something
that needed to be worked out with legal. Spin whatever fantasy makes

Ha! You love the volleyball story!

Like they couldn't vote without your "endured" 13-hour days. Endured?
Do you complain the entire time?

Absolutely. I'm a registered Democrat.

Because I chose to, Kav. I enlisted for training in a Navy specialty
(remember that word?), received that school and was assigned a
follow-up "C" school on the basis of merit. Google it via RAB's
archives. This is old news, terrier.

Again, your research is found lacking, Kav. I was working full-time at
a printing plant when I enlisted.
The military was a great choice for me as I earned college credits,
gained experience, and contributed to an educational assistance
program, VEAP, which paid for a good amount of my college after my
honorable discharge.

That's true. I imagine there are people in the military who could care

You're incorrect on at least two counts in that statement.

Once again, the terrier drops the ball. Your argument - if that's what
this is - doesn't hold water until you find an art educator who has
posted images of student art and has also included names with those
images on a district web page.
> > > The sewing teachers seem capable of getting STYLE on the

At least you're amusing, so do go on, Kav.
"The sewing teachers seem capable of getting STYLE on the website."
There's one page with a student name visible and, unless they obtained
a parental permission form, that shouldn't be there, actually. I'm sure
they did obtain permission, of course.
But you're not really interested in anything but your attempt at
somehow calling me on something. Apparently, anything. Have fun with
that because this is as much of a bite as you're getting.

I did. You got the right state, but you missed on everything else, imo.
There's art there, but it's not art posted by an art teacher. Great
stuff, though. They're truly beautiful crafts and works of art.
Although I had seen some of that art in person, I hadn't seen the web
page, so thanks for posting the link.
> Try again
Try what again? To get you to understand that the art teachers in the
Harrisburg School District do not post student artwork at this time?
You don't want a primer on legal issues, you want to be able to say
whatever it is you want to say. Sooo, have you had your say or are you
going to continue to make a fool of yourself?

This isn't an argument. It's post and reply.

There were three, actually.

None as crazy as you, I suspect.

And is fiances a word?
Fiancé is the groom, Kavin. Have YOU ever been engaged? Rhetorical.
But, no, not one of the women I called my fiancée needed a restraining
order against me. One attempted a recent reconciliation, in fact. A
surprise indeed as she's the one who dumped me more than 20 years ago.
The other invited me out to dinner with her one daughter within the
last three years. The third has no contact with me, but she's the one
you may be familiar with via RAB posts. I'm relieved there's been no
contact with her, but, yeah, at the time I thought she was the one and
only. People make mistakes all the time. I'm certain you can appreciate
making mistakes.

Which, hey, if this IS actually an attempt at being argumentative with
me, that last only verifies my thought that regardless of what I
posted, you'd only whine and moan in response. "Just point out that
even if you did," blah blah blah. It doesn't matter, obviously. You've
got your ax. Enjoy grinding it.
> you would somehow make it about you.
And what's that mean? Can you be more specific? I mean how is your post
not about you and your seemingly intense need to point out my so-called
errors? You're not saying that your posts/exchanges with me don't
relate to your self esteem or some need on your part to prove yourself
superior or... what? What drives you?
Again, rhetorical.

You haven't made a point to get.
Get that?
> cj> I currently volunteer with Black Achievers and the

That IS outside of work, Kavin.
You really shouldn't ask questions until you think them through. I
stated clearly that I currently *volunteer* with Black Achievers and
the TEN program. Volunteer would, oh, to some people of a certain
intelligence, indicate that I was speaking of a nonpaid position.
> It's easy to volunteer on the boss's dime.
But, Kavin, that's not volunteering at all.
I attend Black Achievers on the third Saturday of every month as an
unpaid mentor. A true volunteer as I receive no financial remuneration
from the YMCA for my BA participation nor do I get a dime for helping
out with the TEN students' activities. There is a paid instructor in
the classroom with the students during that after school program. The
program meets in the art room. I am typically in the room after my
normal working hours and regularly volunteer during the time the
program meets.
No pay. Not required to be there. And not on "the boss's dime." Of
course, as an educator, I suppose there's the viewpoint that I'm
salaried and am therefore actually getting paid 24/7, but that's not
what my paycheck reflects. I'm a 189-day employee and get paid by the
hour. A handsome hourly rate at that, imo, despite what people say
about teachers not being paid enough.
