Welcome to the rec.arts.bodyart Purple Pages Directory! This file
is regularly posted on rec.arts.bodyart and is a directory of bodyart
professionals who have volunteered to serve as resources via email.
This FAQ is html-friendly; most news readers will allow you to
jump to the next subject by pressing ^G [control-g].
--------------------------------------------------------------
Subject: INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS FILE
o What is the Purple Pages Directory?
o What is in the Purple Pages Directory?
o Disclaimer (what the directory is NOT)
o "I think I qualify"--How to get a Purple Page for your shop
o Tattoo & Piercing Shops
o Manufacturers & Suppliers
o Affiliates
--------------------------------------------------------------
Subject: WHAT IS THE PURPLE PAGES DIRECTORY?
The Purple Pages is like the White Pages (shop name, artist
name[s], address, phone number), but is also like a "Yellow Pages,"
with additional information such as shop hours and specialization.
In addition, purple is symbolic: Tattoos and niobium body jewelry
come in purple; purple bandanas are used by some to show interest
in body piercing, and purple is also the color of most stencils used
by tattoo artists with thermo faxes.
In this sense, the directory is the first inclusive listing
available for ALL bodyart professionals, regardless of
specialization. All those listed have agreed to the following:
o The only businesses allowed to be included are those with Internet-
accessible email accounts;
o Serve as a resource accessible via email for queries that might
not necessarily end in a sale;
o To avoid the posting of "ads" but using alternatives such as WWW,
gopher, ftp, private email;
o To have entries removed should the business lose 'net connectivity
(through staff changes, etc.).
In exchange, the Purple Pages strives toward the following:
o To provide "safe space" for businesses who need an acceptable
format in which to promote their shops;
o To encourage responsible netizenship by businesses;
o To encourage interaction between professionals and r.a.b. readers
on a personal and non-judgmental level;
o To provide a higher level of 'net awareness among professional
circles;
o To encourage the use of technology and computers for bodyart
businesses.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Subject: WHAT IS IN THE PURPLE PAGES DIRECTORY?
The directory has been separated into very general categories,
according to their primary business. Because so many tattoo shops
now have in-house professional piercers, we have combined tattoo
and piercing shops into one category. Manufacturers and suppliers
who sell bodyart-related materials but who do not provide bodyart
services are listed in another category. The third category,
"Affiliates," lists those who are closely identified, allied or
aligned with the bodyart industry.
The directory will be listed alphabetically according to the name
of the business, unless the familiarity of the business name is
secondary to the name of the main contact.
Each entry contains information in the following format
(enumerated for example):
1. NAME OF SHOP (in all caps)
2. Contact person's name and <email address>
3. Address; phone/fax
4. Shop hours
5. Addresses of WWW pages, gopher or anon ftp sites
6. Type of business
7. Others at the establishment (and their specializations if they
are tattooists)
8. 25-word "blurb" of their choosing in quote marks.
Each entry is separated by * * * * * * * * * * *
--------------------------------------------------------------
Subject: DISCLAIMER
Appearance in this directory should in no way be construed as any
"seal of approval" by the FAQ maintainer or the readership.
Submissions are based solely on the contributors' willingness to
follow the policies and rules set forth in the Purple Pages
Directory, and not based on the quality of their work or lack
thereof. There is NO quality review process for these businesses.
While resource contacts *may* offer personal opinions, they may
also speak on behalf of their businesses. We have assumed that the
proprietors are informed of their businesses being posted here by
their employees (although for most, the contact person *is* the
owner).
Since these people are not online all the time (and are often
paying higher connect fees), they are not obliged to reply with
very in-depth, long replies--especially if the questions are
adequately addressed in the FAQ sheets, or can be easily answered
by non-professionals and others on the newsgroup itself.
If you find a resource here acting irresponsibly and against the
Purple Pages agreement, please contact the FAQ maintainer at
<tes...@uhunix.uhcc.hawaii.edu>.

Subject: COPYRIGHT AND DISTRIBUTION NOTICE
The copyright for this document is retained by the maintainer.
Anyone caught making and distributing copies will be thanked
profusely (by me and all the businesses)! You are hereby granted
permission to redistribute electronically and via print as many
copies as you wish, in whole or in part, including adding this to
your web site. If you redistribute this document in sections
(versus just a shop here or there), please provide a notation on
its source ("Internet Usenet newsgroup rec.arts.bodyart Purple
Pages Directory FAQ") so people know where it came from. Please
provide credit to me if quoting material from this beginning
section.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Subject: "I THINK I QUALIFY"--HOW TO GET A PURPLE PAGE FOR
YOUR SHOP
You may be qualified to get in this directory if you are a
professional in the bodyart industry, or are somehow
professionally affiliated. We also welcome listings from various
bodyart associations and suppliers.
If you are a professional body piercer or a body piercing supplier,
you should first email Piercing FAQ editor Anne "Ardvark" Greenblatt
<ard...@richmond.infi.net> for inclusion into her piercing FAQ lists.
Then if you would *also* like to serve as a resource, please send email
to me at <tes...@uhunix.uhcc.hawaii.edu>.
All others may email me directly. You will be provided with an
e-form which you will be expected to return.
This directory will list professionals only. Apprentices and
informally trained practitioners are requested not to apply unless
they are directly supervised by qualified professionals who agree
to the terms outlined in this FAQ. Professionals are defined as
those who are properly trained in their discipline, who work full
time (or near full-time) in their field and obtain most of their
income this way.
Finally, the FAQ maintainer retains the right to remove, or deny
addition in this directory for businesses who abuse, ignore or
misuse the guidelines.

Subject: MANUFACTURERS & SUPPLIERS
Businesses that make and/or sell bodyart products
(retail, wholesale or mail order) but do NOT perform
services on clientele.
**IMPORTANT NOTE**: Most professional tattoo artists strongly
oppose the advertising of tattoo supplies and equipment. "Starter
kits" have been likened to the sale of mail order dentistry
kits. However, the sale of such equipment is NOT illegal (just
immoral). And because I do not believe in imposing censorship
policies, I will not prohibit the listing of such companies. In the
strongest wording possible, I discourage all from purchasing such
kits and turning into scratchers. Those who are interested in
becoming tattoo artists should read all the sections of the Tattoo
FAQ and contact some tattoo artists about the procedures for
becoming an apprentice.
Additional note: While it may be legal for nonprofessionals to
purchase "Starter kits," it may be illegal for such persons to
use the equipment on others, depending on where they reside.
