I'll be turning 18 soon, & I've been planning on getting a tattoo or a
piercing or something ... anything at all; I can't wait to modify my
body! My parents, on the other hand, aren't so eager, actually they're
diametrically opposed to the whole idea. So I was wondering how subtle
modifications actually were. How noticeable is finger mustache tattoo
on the inside of the index finger for example? Would it stand out, or
would it have to be flaunted to actually be seen? And blacklight /
glow-in-the-dark tattoos, can they really be seen under usual lighting?
What about a pierced daith? Or a split tongue? Any insight would be
appreciated, I'm quite new to all of this.

i'll teach you to turn away.

My 50 Cent trivia: (Because, yes, it truly IS all about ~*ME*~! Okay,
it's not, but, hey.) 50 Cent was born *Curtis James* Jackson III in
1976.

At 17 going on 18, I'm sure some people are indeed mature enough for
permanent decisions, so lish's (what I perceive as sarcastic) comment
is, perhaps, unnecessary, however I agree that http://www.bmezine.com/
should be required reading.

Re your post, though...

If your parents are footing your room and board then I'd say you owe
them some respect or at least a teeeeeeny bit o' consideration with
regard to your mods which will be under ~*THEIR*~ roof, eh?

And, yeah, more concerning the noticeability factor...

Finger mustache:

http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/25177

Funny stuff.

Blacklight / glow-in-the-dark tattoos:

Daith:

http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&lr=&q=daith

How long is your hair? How large of a gauge were you considering?
Daith's aren't much /worse/ than a lobe, imo.

Split tongue:

Uh, did you plan on ever opening your mouth again? A cool mod, I would
imagine, but not something I'd try to hide from mom and pop. No.

And, although I do think it's a cool mod (Have you seen pics of someone
with a split tongue holding a cigarette? Sweet.) it's rather
commonplace. I mean if you're considering this one for the EGZTREEM
badge. Again, no.

Two (not 50) cent 'n all, yo.

Welcome to RAB.

Thanks for the advice. I had read quite a bit on BME, & I'm pretty
sure I want to get a finger mustache, but I wasn't quite sure how much
they stood out. After reading that metafilter post, and looking at a
few mustaches that I'd drawn on myself with a Sharpie in a mirror, I
think I'm going to have to wait until I head off to college as it would
seem a bit quaint to wear mittens during the summer months. Thanks
again.

P.S. "Have you seen pics of someone with a split tongue holding a
cigarette?" -- no, & I couldn't find any on Google, care to link me?

No problem.

Cool. You should check out IAM as well if you haven't already. Lots of
people your age and some even as antique as yours truly. See:

Have you walked around all day with a moustache on your index finger?
Give it a try and look for reactions. Me? I'd stick with the Sharpie.

heh

True, but you could always do one of those Iverson deals:

I couldn't find any either, but I /think/ I remember seeing an image of
a chic holding a cigarette with her split tongue in an issue of
Piercing Fans International at a tattoo shop once.

I'm normally pretty handy with the Google, but the only thing I've come
up with so far has been...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v108/curt_james/RAB/cigtongue.jpg

That was courtesy of Google search string _cigarette, tongue_.

Really, they're not noticeable at all. To wit:

:-)

Still looking...
