HI!

I wonder if someone could tell me how many episodes of the
_Galaxy_Express_999_ TV series were made, or -better yet -
if there is an episode guide floating around somewhere?

Surely I can't be the only person to like this silly and melodramatic,
but strangely beautifull series.

You are not alone. I actually got my anime start on Captain Harlock
(the real, non-Macek version). I've always wanted to see more GE999,
but rarely get the chance.

I'm afraid I can't help you on the TV series; I do know that two excellent
movies were made. There were also a couple TV specials ("Can you live
as a Soldier?", the Esmeraldus one, and I seem to recall one called
"Can you live as a Mother?", but I'm not sure). I remember hearing
rumors that Macek had the rights to one or more of the GE999 specials,
but (thankfully?) he hasn't produced anything.

There were 113 episodes in this series. One of my favorites!!

Has anyone answered your question?

Personally, it doesn't matter a great deal what the series
is, but if there's an episode guide on computer, I'd be
interested in seeing it. That's because I'm writing an
episode guide for one of my own favorite anime series, and
I'm searching for other guidebooks that could serve as a
model for my own work.

Anyway, to answer your question, there is a guidebook...
in Japanese. I signed it out from my library. Unfortunately,
I'm Japanese impaired.

At the least, I can tell you something about this guidebook:

312 pages
650 yen (printed in 1979!)

It's a small sized book (10.5cm wide x 15cm high x 2.5
thick) with thick, good quality paper. That's about the
size of a paperback novel, I suppose.

The first 60 or so pages are in glossy color, with
scenes from all 30 episodes. The rest of the book is in
black and white.

Next come the synopses for episodes 1 to 30
(I would assume there are only 30 episodes).
Each episodes gets about three to four pages, each
page being half-filled with screen shots.

On page 179, the synopses end, and we get many pages
(almost half the book!) of stuff about the Galaxy
Express universe. There are line drawings of all the
other trains -- Galaxy Express 111, all the way to 888
-- then character designs, the "mecha", and designs for
many of the locations

Lastly, the back cover has an ad for some Galaxy Express
toys.

All in all, not a bad book for a series that didn't
really impress me in the first place... Then again,
I've only seen six subtitled episodes so far.

Here's why this show didn't really interest me:
Galaxy Express is space fantasy; really, it's too silly
for someone that prefers hard science fiction.
What can you expect when the "spaceship" is a steam
train, and you can open the windows in deep space...

The main character Tetsuro is annoying. Is there a need
for him to be so trigger happy? People die with
alarming frequency in this story. Somehow, I keep
hoping that he'll meet his demise on one of those
planets. Speaking of which, it's amazing how easily he
and Meiteru get into trouble. They only get to stay on
each planet for one day, yet almost everytime they get
into life-threatening situations.

I didn't like how grim their universe is; everything is
in decay, and people are miserable on almost every
planet.

Heh heh, I wonder what did you like about this show?

Heh. There is a force field around the train. But after
going to see the dubbed movie with some friends (the one
with the imitation John Wayne voice for Harlock), I had
to endure comments such as: "Roll up them windows, pardner,
we're leavin' the atmosphere", and the immortal: "Bartender,
a glass of milk, please"

Yeah, but the length of the day varies from planet to planet.
You forgot to add: and the train is always just about to leave
without them, but they manage arrive at the last possible moment.

Must be some kind of allegory, ne?

Maybe because it is unlike any of your typical macho guy (or gal)
with big gun/robot genre typical of SF anime?

Is Galaxy Express 999 available anywhere? I saw it in a
third-run theater in Orlando, Florida, US, dubbed. This
was when I was very young, and the theater let me watch
it constantly all day. I sat in the same first-row seat
through an entire day's run, trying to memorize everything
about the movie. It was my first exposure to anime, and
I'd really like to see it again.

If only to see how my tastes have changed in the past
fifteen years.

You're not. Just it's so old that most people aren't interested, nobody
I konw of has bought tapes of it, I don'tthink the series is available
on LD (I think the movie is, and it's sequel Adeiu GE 999 may be also),
and it's largely an unknown to alot of people uless they've been
collecting for a long time. It IS nice - one of those epic stories in
the Yamato/Harlock vein - the designers seem to like those types of
stories (Queen Millennia, Harlock, GE, Yamato all being done by the same
guy, y'know).

I used to watch it. The two movies were great. Especially the scenes with
Captain Harlock and the Aracadia. Talk about testosterone, he was just
awesome. Appeared to be much older than the Harlock TV series, which is
actually set later in the timeline.

One more thing to add. Yamato was drawn by Leiji Matsumoto but the creator
is someone else and set in an entirely different universe than most of
Matsumoto's stories.

What! 113 episodes! 2 movies! TV specials!

Look what you have done! Now you made me cry :)

Only the first 16 episodes were ever released here in Finland - and that
was in mid-80ies, so there is no hope for getting any more.

Getting one's hands on the rest has proved to be a pain in the .... well..
in the parts of one's anatomy one is too modest to name in public ;)

I don't usually write much about other anime shows, but
since this is such a little talked about series, I feel like
feeding this small thread.

Does anyone have information about the manga version of
Galaxy Express 999? I wonder how different it is from the
anime?

Eep! There aren't any English letters that say "ISBN", but
there is something on the back cover that says
<kanji stuff> ko--do 63541-40

The publisher is Keibunsha.

Here are a few things I was able to figure out from staring
at the book:
Voice actors:
NOSAWA Masako as HOSHINO Tetsuro
IKEDA Masako as Meiteru
KIMOTSUKI Kaneta as Shashou <Train Conductor>
TAKAGI Hitoshi as the narrator

By the way, if it wasn't obvious to you, Masako is a woman's
name. As usual, a woman has to play the part of the little
boy. ^_^

BTW, what episodes have you seen?
I've seen from #13 to 22 so far (simplistic English
subtitles provided by the "Nippon Golden Network"). And I
started watching this show about two weeks ago.
Good timing eh?

There's something in episode 17, "The Armored Planet" that
confused me: Meiteru gets run through by a steel beetle and
needs medical attention or else she'll die. The doctor that
Tetsuro eventually finds isn't capable of treating organic
lifeforms, but Meiteru gets healed somehow; a disembodied
voice speaks to Meiteru in the train and, I presume, heals
her. Does anyone know who that was? Or is it just another of
the many things that aren't explained in this show?

Are there any GE999 experts around here?

regarding the allegory...
This episode has an interesting allegory:
(I hope I'm not misusing the word; "allegory" keeps confusing me)

#19 Zange no Kuni
<Land of Confession> (this guidebook I have is quite
useful for locating episode
numbers, anyway :)

This planet is supposed to be an extremely safe world,
but while walking in a park, the train conductor gets
mugged. The director finds out about this and says that
the conductor, Meiteru and Tetsuro all must be "taken
care of"--otherwise, their planet will get bad
publicity.

Do I detect a hint of a reference to Japan? Hmm...
Then again, there are a few Christian elements on that
planet, too.

Episode 19 is also pretty amusing in another way: That train
conductor must be Ryo Saeba in disguise--he shot down a
fighter plane with one blast of his laser gun.

In fact, I think Tetsuro and Meiteru are also excellent
shooters. Especially Meiteru; a recent episode I saw had her
outdraw a professional gunslinger.

Here's a short list of some other things that amused me so far:
Episode
14: After getting gang-mugged on a world of mechanical
people, Meiteru somehow sets it up so that the
planet explodes. How about that for industrial
strength overkill?

18: In order to retrieve Tetsuro from a woman's house
(located in a mud hole the size of a lake), the
authorities remove all the mud surrounding her
house, destroying it in the process. Couldn't they
have done it an easier way?

The woman that kidnapped Tetsuro returns him to the
train for a reward. They tell her she can have
*anything* she wants. So she asks for a ticket on
the express... and ownership of Tetsuro! Even more
interesting was that they complied with her
request!

Anime pretty much follows the manga faithfully.

Well, the mystery keeps building up throughout the series but it was never
explained clearly. But if you've seen the movies or the endings of the TV
series and the manga, you can probably get a shallow idea of this "secret".
Leiji Matsumoto wasn't good at explaining HOW it's possible while you
somehow get WHY it was possible. ^_^;

Anyway, I think it doesn't really matter since this show is really
"allegorical". :)

>Are there any GE999 experts around here?

What's the definition of GE999 expert?

Some anime experts claim that Meter didn't really exist.
(Well, she says so in the movie. ^_-)

Which brings up the question... did I dream this? Or does anyone know if
or when the Captain Harlock TV series will come out on LD?

Last night I was remembering some of the episodes, actually bits and pie-
ces, but it was so long ago I can't recall all the episodes or even the music

As I remembered, there are a total of 113 episodes of the
Galaxy Express 999 TV series and a movie (or 2? since there is movie LDs
in the anime market). I'm not too sure about the figure so may be some
999 fans verify these.
