It's been a while since it's announcement, and it still has not
been mentioned. Does anyone else find the fact that an anime based off
Anne's diary a bit... ironic? Not too much, but still...

Ironic? Why?

I heard about it (i.e. the anime) via a 20/20 story recounting Anne
Frank's diary. It only tells me that if you want an animation done
right, you go to the best.

I myself had high hopes for the film when I first heard it announced, but
considering that at its' premeire in Germany (I forget which city it was)
the Anne Frank Society refused to support the film because they didn't like
it, I can only wonder what angle the film must have taken, and hope it wasn't
badly done.

Of course, everybody's definition of 'badly done' is going to vary, and I
will reserve my judgment on the film until I see it myself. (don't let the
AFS's judgment of the film bias you) It's disappointing that the AFS didn't
like the film, but I hope it isn't as bad as they make it out to be. (their
main gripe was that it portrayed Anne's life too idealistically, and not as
near to the harsh reality that it really was.)

Any idea if this film will be released in the US? I would be delighted if
Central Park Media could get a hold of it, as it is similar to the 'type' of
other anime released under that title like GotF & Nippon Mukashibanashi,
and release a nice subtitled version. (the German release was a German dub,
and it was/will be shown elsewhere in Europe, though I'm not sure if it was
dubbed in those respective languages or not..)

HEY! Stop that mis-information!

Premier: Amsterdam, the Netherlands (that's where Anne lived during
the war) for a group of Jewish children.

An article (more photo than article ;) ) in the local newspaper
(Eindhoven, the Netherlands) reported that producer Seiya Araki
DID have permission from the Anne Frank foundation in Bazel.

A short item about this movie was on the Dutch 6 o'clock news :) a few
weeks ago. I recorded it and I'll try to convert it to a
quicktime or avi movie and upload it to venice after that.
If I succeed in doing this, the sound may sound a bit strange to most
people:
the English voices, then a Dutch newsreader-voice and after that
the producer(?) talking in Japanese, all while a part of the movie
is playing... ^_^
I think there will be very few people who can understand all three of
those. ;)

This I was wrong about. You're right.

However, this is contrary to what I've heard. Unless somebody was
deliberately misquoting Teresien da Silva, a spokesman for the Anne Frank
Foundation, he himself said that the AFF chose not to support the movie.
(it was admittedly not a completely fair statement, because they had only at
the time watched a ten minute segment of the movie, and read the script)
After consulting with da Silva, Amsterdam's Tuschinski Cinema, the
theater where the film's creators wanted to show the movie originally,
declined Araki's request. So the film was shown on June 12, at an
Amsterdam cultural center.

(information from a movie review posted to the Miyazaki ML by Scott N.)

Perhaps the AFF changed their mind later on. I haven't heard any more
information other than that movie review.
