Today, I received in the mail, a videotape and brouchure on the
TG16, and surprise!, there will be a Maison Ikkoku game (from the
PC Engine, I assume) and Cobra, from the manga of the same name.
The game that comes with the TG16, Keith Courage, is from the anime
series "Wataru".
(rec.games.video part)
The tape also had previews from upcoming games that will be
translated from the PC Engine, and there were a few CD-ROM games-
from what I saw, it looks great! They showed "Noriko"- it looked
alright, but I don;t know how the Japanese lyrics will make the
game marketable in the US. But make any CD-ROM game based on any
group on this side of the Pacific, and you'll have a winner. And of
course, the CD-ROM player also can read CD-G disks.

One thing I would love to know is how they can make a game out of Maison
Ikkoku. It's a great series, and I love it to pieces, but it doesn't seem
to be the type of thing that lends itself to gaming, unless it's to go about
picking up beer and sake bottles to see how drunk you can get. :-)
Any information you might have would be appreciated.

I might have seen this game while in Japan - I know I saw SOME Mezon Ikkoku
game, but I believe it was for a PC. The game I saw was a graphic adventure,
taking place just before Godai and Kyoko's wedding, I think. I'm really
unclear on the specifics, since I just came across it on a computer in the
store, there was no documentation nearby, and I had to try and read it in
Japanese as I went along, but I believe Godai's trying to get into one of the
rooms, which is locked, for something important, so he has to go around and
talk to all the other characters and solve puzzles to get a key.
I have no idea if this is the game they'll be bringing over - I don't really
see the point, myself.

According to the September 1, 1989 issue of Famicom Tsushin, the PC
Engine version of "Maison Ikkoku" is indeed adapted from the computer
game, and is apparently almost the same as the Famicom (Nintendo)
version.
I'll be very surprised if they release this game in the US. For one
thing, almost no one in this country has heard of Maison Ikkoku, and
for another, it's apparently not a very good game. All four reviewers
gave it negative reviews in this issue; then there were two more
seemingly negative reviews in the accompanying "PC Engine Tsushin"!
From what I can tell, the object of the game (you play Godai) is to
get ahold of Kyoko's secret photograph. To do this you have find
various objects (such as a bra on the roof) to give you an excuse to
go to Kyoko's room. Once there, you try to look at her secret photo,
but every time you do this you get interrupted by someone else. So,
to placate them, you have to go to the store (run by someone who looks
remarkably like Lum of Urusei Yatsura) and buy them gifts. Also,
anytime you do something lewd, the game immediately ends. This
apparently happens quite often, so they recommend saving the game a
lot. It's called an "adventure game" instead of a "role-playing
game," and I'm not quite sure what the distinction is.
So anyway, this game looks good only for Maison Ikkoku fanatics. It
does have some nice graphics inspired by scenes from the series. But
true fans will probably want to get it in Japanese, else much of the
charm would be lost. I'm sure those in rec.arts.anime will appreciate
the scene where Kyoko slaps Godai:
Kanrininsan "Haai"
Kanrininsan "Ara, Godai-san"
Kanrininsan "Bakaa- !!"

Sad, but true. I would almost say that a US introduction would make
some players into Maison Ikkoku fans, but......

..which basically kills any chance of being released to the US anyway.
We have to be realistic here. First, the names would change, like
usual. I can just see it, Godai becomes Edgar Winter (like Johnny
Winter in the english MZ-23)(see note below), Kyoko becomes Rosanne
Barr, Yotsua becomes Bruce Lee ("ah sooo, Mr. Lee"), and any other bad
sterotypes you can think of, or they WILL think of. Oh yes, the
Cha-Cha-Maru will become The Hard Rock Cafe, and Ikkoku-kan will
become some sleazy apartment building in Oakland, California........
JUST KIDDING!!!, but you get the point.
I would like to see the game, just the same, which leads me to ask
Mark Newton-John......was the M.I. game pictured/featured on the
videotape you got???

(P.S.: `Johnny Winter(s)' is a musician playing what was called back
in the 70's "Acid Rock", and was considered the LOUDEST guitar player
known back then. His brother, Edgar, formed a band called, appropriately,
'Johnny & Edgar Winter', which had the distinction of reducing your
hearing for 3 days after one of their concerts, which I personally
discovered myself when I was 14....)
I have an old "Fighting Famicom" magazine (or whatever, I can't
remember the exact title) that has some hints for the game. Without
digging the magasine out, you meet the various characters,
Ichinose-san, Ibuki, Kozue, and even Kyoko's niece, Ikuko (?).
Okay, I'll dig out my magazine...
(I never did get around to translating it...) By looking at the
article, it runs pretty much through the story. Screen shots are:
Ichinose-san in sailor suit, Yotsuya-san in H.S. tunic, with, by
the way, two other student friends that look alot like Ataru and
Lum...
A typical party in Godai's room, inside the Cha-cha maru bar with
Akemi and Master, Soichiro (inu) and a freaking out Mitaka...
The article is set up in a question-answer format, and the screen
shots show different views, depending on what you do in that scene.
Oh, and one more, there is a scene where you are buying something
at a grocery store, and the checker (with green hair, and looks
like Lum...) helps you out.
