Yes, those resemblances are amazing, aren't they?
Part of the reason for this incredible coincidence of artistic styles is the
fact that both of these fine television shows were, in fact, actual bonafide
ANIME! Tranzor Z was the English dubbed version of Mazinger Z, an old Go

Hi,
I'm a newbie poster, so I probably don't know enuf. But as I
recall, Tranzor Z was an english-translation of a japanese series made
originally byTOEMI (Toshiba EMI). It sorta shows, since the dialogue
was kind of roughly done, for Tranzor Z.

Tranzor Z was originally Mazinger [sp?] Z.

Voltron was Golion [sp?].

Really? Ah, the pieces fall together (*click*). I remember seeing a
picture of this GoLion thing, and remarking, "Boy, that reminds me of
'Voltron'." But how does this explain the episode(s) in which the two
different robots called Voltron "team up," their respective bad guys
team up, and they all go at it with the "RoBeasts(tm)" ...?
Hmmm, another memory from the past resurfaces.
I seem to recall one episode where a bunch of generals where sitting at a
conference table, discussing a replacement for Voltron. They watched a tape
on the video screen which showed the replacement in action, where it was
obviously not doing too well; I think it was fighting a robeast and losing, it
may even have been blown up. The replacement Voltron was navy blue, and was
pretty ugly looking.
I'm also pretty sure that I saw in a toy store a set of Voltron toys, about
five inches high. The vehicle Voltron was called Voltron I, the lion Voltron
was called Voltron III, and there was also a navy-blue Voltron II, which may
have been the one I just mentioned.
On the other hand, I would be surprised if they made a toy out of a robot that
only appeared for ten seconds of animation.

It's called, slash-hack'n-Macek'er the plot and animation. Not
that Macek himself did it, but this standard practice to "domesticize"
anime is pretty prevalent in the US should the show hit broadcast TV.

Actually, I think that the people who brought "Voltron" to the u.s. may have
actually gotten in touch with the original studios to do that one. It isn't
cutting back and forth between the two robots like it could have been. There
were actually many scenes of the robots standing side-by-side, as well as the
characters, with movement as if it was originally done that way.

Tranzor Z was a version of Mazanger Z, By Go Nagai. It was
the show that defined the early giant robot genra. I heard the
translation was based on an italian translation, but I don't have any
hard data on that.
If I remember correctly, Golion and Dairugger XV: one was a spinoff or
sequel to the other. (not too much hack and / but plenty of Maceky
re-writing.)

Actually, tGolion and Dairugger are totally seperate series, independant
of each other. The Voltron special where the two teams team-up was done
especially for the American audiences by Korean animators (lucky us).

Yeah, they're based on much older Japanese shows (try eight or nine years...
wait, probably over ten years... I was still in Taiwan about nine years ago,
and remember the Taiwanese networks made their own Power Ranger type TV
shows... DREADFUL)... I can't believe that, after about a decade, they can't
even make the special effects better; a lot of the special effects seem much
worse than the Japanese original (but then again, what do I know? I hate the
show so much, I don't watch it [with the exception of seeing it on the
commercials])...
The Power Rangers are just another way for the producers to make some quick
bucks off the poor kids who aren't able to tell good fx from bad fx and good
acting from bad acting... It'll die out, just like the Teenage Mutant Ninja
Turtles... Have you noticed that there aren't any kids out there now wanting
to be Michealangelo, Raphel, etc.? In a few years, those kids who are now
crazy about the Power Rangers will look back and say to themselves, "What was I
thinking?"

"Change the channel!" -Zangief
Have you seen Sentai #5 by antarctic? One article traces back
many of the aspects of modern sentai shows to SPIDER MAN. Aparently
Marvel gave bandai carte blanch to do whatever they wanted with their
characters sometime in the 70's so they made a spider man show, and
included a giant robot who's only real purpose was to give spiderman a
"finishing move" The effects were third rate, and 100% recycled after
the tenth episode, but the robot toy sold well. The giant robots have
been part of every successive sentai show.
