I don't know... it looks like US anime model-makers are all a bunch of
lonely freaks or something, it's damn hard to find an anime fan balanced
enough these days to really appreciate the fine angles and curves of a
kickass mecha kit! Nooo, instead they play with their "Oooh aah my
Goddess" kits and other such stuff. Nope... Mecha modelling is much more
popular in Japan, where they appreciate science and engineering alot more
than in the US. Perhaps we'd build better cars if more of us built mecha
models!

No, come to Montreal or Toronto. There's a model show here (Dorval) that
even has a separate category for mecha. http://pages.infinit.net/dragonsd
is the web page for this show (just checked it and it seems to be down).

Wonderfest is, after all, a *figure* contest. I wouldn't be surprised if
most of the anime entries were by figure painters who got interested in
anime
because of a figure kit that appealed to them rather than anime fans who
got into modeling.
That's how I got interested in anime. I was in San Fran on business and
came across one of the Max Factory 1/6th Guyver kits and thought "Wow,
what's this all about?" It wasn't until several years later, when the
anime became available in the US that I even saw Guyver. Until then I
only knew what it was about from asking questions on the net. "Some
guy hits his head on a stainless steel danish which turns into a power
suit..."
I've built a few mecha kits now, but I'll always be a figure painter
first.
I started with 54mm military figures in 1975.

To Provide you with this info I was subjected to a blow in the head by
an empty beer bottle.( It fell of the shelf while I was diggin' for
the model boxes)
The models in question:
Heavy Missle Carrier 1/100 ARII
Light Missle Carrier 1/100 ARII
Tactical Scout Type 1/100 ARII
Standard Type Tactical pod 1/72 IMAI
(all Regult)
Currently tryng to figure a way to do a nice beat up metal finish so
they'll look well used when built.

No, they just have a lot of 10 year old boys with allowances that give
the impression that mecha modeling is more popular. When you look at the
number of adult fans in Japan, I think you will find the figures are about
on even keel with the mecha in popularity.
-Lumraptor
Get a life. I could sit here and shit on your tastes in public like
you just shit on mine, but what's the point? There is room in this hobby
for fans of both kinds of kit fans. I would have liked to have seen mecha
fans descend on Wonderfest (Except who ever posted the above.) and make a
good show of themselves, but there was only one mecha entry- and it won a
silver medal. Maybe next year will be better.

Probably about the same as the number of social outcast modelers who
stay at home playing with their mecha models and wishing they had real
mecha so they could "get even" with society. ^_^
T'was an attempt at humour, stillborn it seems, nothing more. I'm
just a silly old fart whop's real passion is '30's flying boats.
sigh......
Look, kids, IT'S ALL GOOD, okay? I don't build figure models myself, but I
admire fine sculpting quality and slick design wherever I see it, and
there's plenty of both to be found in modern figure kits. My thing is
mecha, but I don't care if yours is figures, aircraft, armor, 1/1 scale
fake sushi, or whatever... if it works for you, fine. I get tired of the
constant dissing that goes on in rec.models.scale over subject
preferences, so let's not let it get too out of hand in here, 'kay?
One footnote... the reason my long-ago participation in anime clubs was so
short-lived was that for some reason, my average fellow member not only
had ZERO sense of humor, but generally took any difference of opinion
(however clumsily stated) as an excuse to start in with the personal
attacks. On a subject as ultimately trivial as little plastic models based
on cheap little cartoons, it's just not worth it. So I sincerely hope not
to see the group degenerate over the next week into escalating rounds of
tit-for-tat... got it?
Don't make me come back there!

It takes far more hours to finsh a decent mecha kit. Obviously, the
time will depend upon the model, but mecha's require more
craftmanship, usually.

Do both of you actually know how popular each subjects are in Japan?
Can you read Japanese or personally know modelers in Japan?
I personally don't know, and I don't really care. I just build
whatever I like.
Fighting over which subject is better is like fighting over the taste
between Pepsi and Coke. Why can't we just drink whichever we like and
get along?
Both ANIME mecha's and figures comes from anime and both subjects are
models...
Trying out each other's subject might give both of you some clue about
each other's subject. Do this before trashing other's treasured
hobbies.
You can also try applying rust of some sort (some metals do oxidize).
There are many products for this, but my favorite is apply Testors Acrilic
paint with a brush which has been dipped in paint thinner. This leaves a neat
slightly textured pattern which can be accented with Conte Crayons and/or
Pastels. You can also try applying washes of various colors to depict various
metals, or apply dull coat to specific areas to duplicate oxidation.
Zentradi Mecha was usually in poor shape because the Zentradi were not
very good at repairing them. This rarely ever mattered in battles, as usually
the Zentradi could be successful through shear numbers.
There is no one definite way to approach projects ;ike this, so
experimenting a little can prove usefull (just be sure to do so on something
which your not to concerned about messing up.
Have fun.

I don't think that being balanced has anything to do with is. Most of my
freinds are phsycos and nuerotics yet still love both mecha and figure model.
Some people (such as myself) are doomed never to grow up.

I've never played with any of my kits, especially my mecha models. I spent
hour inventing ways to increase their mobility, only to stand them all in the
same, static "at ease" pose". Make sense, doesn't it?
In reality, it all boils down to the time and labor you spend on a subject, not
what the subject is. This becomes readily apparent in your final product, be
it Belldandy or Char's Sazabi.

I'm no expert on what goes on in Japan, but when you concider:
a. the price of a figure model compaired to the average mecha kit
b. the huge number of inexpensive Bandia and the like kits which are produced
each year
c. the cost of resin and vinal verses the cost of most plastics
it becomes obvious why mecha kits are more readily visible. However, this does
not make them any better.
Personally, 65% of my subjects are US automobiles (especially 1929 to 1970
heavy trucks), 33% are mecha, and the remaining are various subjects including
figure models (i have about 500 kits or so, so this is still a decent number)
and I wouldn't knock adding another genre or two to it. I feel that nearly
everything has it's own validity, and that we are all modelers, and equally
deserving credit for our efforts.
As to a "superiority" of Japanese vehicles over US vehicles, don't even get me
started.
I started building kits at about 10 or 11 years old, and have been doing so for
nearly 15 years now (which also gives you an idea of how much of an old fart I
am). I thank the plastic gods that kits were cheap and allowence came regular,
or I might have a real life of some sort today, instead of the blessedness of
cutting little peices and attaching them to each other while summarily
attempting to keep all of my extremities from becoming dettached and my fingers
from being glued together. Have fun.

I'm not sure I believe that, if only for _economic_ reasons. After all,
they don't MAKE mass production figure kits as far as I know, but they DO
make mecha kits!
I think if you balance GK mecha and GK figures, the Figures will
probably win out. But overall mecha and figures, no contest. Also look at

mecha fans are of the Nixonesque "Silent Majority"!

I think what the ol' chap was trying to put in front of your eyes, and reading ability is that
for all intents and propuses people have their own opinions.
Now I personally like doing figures, Sure a mecha is good, and challenging in its own
right.. but when it comes down to it, I feel personally.. coming from a Armor, plane modelling
background. That figures, of any nature that is of the human form, is an extreme challenge..
People know what their looking at.. An Eye is an eye on a real woman as on an resin woman.
Period..

GRIN! Thanks bud! I couldn't have done it without you! Who would have
thought that a post by you about how figure kitters have no sense of
humor, followed by a humorous joke-flame by me, could so QUICKLY have
netted a humorless figure modeller!? GRIN!
Once again, the mightly metal making minions of mecha modelling have
through mecha modelling mania mechanically mashed the masquerading masses
of fanatic figure figeters!
Ah, okay, this thread was fun for a day, but I grow weary, and the great
hunger is upon me once more! GO mighty Web-surfer! Hurtle through

(Heh heh)
Right now I'm building the "1/144 RX-79 EZ-8 Gundam Special", it's a
great mecha kit with tons of acessories and gimmicks for a 1/144 kit,
including opening cockpit (!), slide open chest utility panels,
antipersonnel munitions turret, soft rubber parachute straps, detachable
parachute pack, detachable booster pack, detachable forklift backpack, a
scale-figure of Shiro (Pilot), beam rifle, two sabers, moving knee and
shoulder armors, an _open_ hand, a cool GM-style head, and MORE MORE MORE!
And I've left out the facepiece and instead added in a piece of highly
reflective luminous red plastic for that cool GM look! More later!

Man, there was something about the MACROSS series... not to mention many
others from the mid-80's... there was just a certain magic about those
kits that is missing from the current GUNDAM *Infinity* selection (hey, if
anyone from Sunrise is reading this post, I'll sue yer ass if you steal
that for the name of your next G-crapfest... I know you've almost run out
the letters of the alphabet, but that's not my problem).
Now, mind you, I wholeheartedly dig most all the GUNDAM stuff, and the
technical sophistication of the recent releases is far beyond anything to
be found in the MACROSS line and a genuine joy to behold, but I get a
certain singular thrill from the ambition and variety that could be found
in those old kits. So many cool, weird things, the likes of which would be
either too large or too obscure for the bean-counters to put into
production today... the 1/100 ARII REGULT triplets, the very awesome
big-scale GLAUG and MONSTER kits... the 1/72 DESTROID TOMAHAWK... the
multiple variations of damn near everything, each with its very own cool
painted illustration on the box top... some of which had several very
distinct art variations to boot? That, and you could get many of the best
kits for between 3 and 10 dollars back when they were new, back when Pony
Toy was THE place for mecha rather than a fond memory... Not to mention
the many other bizarre and relatively affordable kits that the other
manufacturers were doing back then.
Fer example, does anyone else here appreciate how freakin' cool the
XABUNGLE kits are? Great detail, many itsy-bitsy pieces (almost like a
REAL model), and crazy designs that would never fly with the current
safety-minded drones at Bandai. Yes, those were the good ol' days... I
could never have amassed a collection of 1000+ kits if they had ALL cost
30-50 bucks, after all...
Well, I was lucky. I got hooked when MACROSS was a new thing, so I managed
to get at least one of every molding done in the ARII/IMAI series (except
for the "VALKYRIE gunpod" and the motorized Minmay doll. both of which I
had at least one shot at.... a regret, if only a mild one. Hell, I came
THIS close to missing out on the insanely cool 1/160 MONSTER) while they
were still readily available (the 1/200 GLAUG and 1/72 TOMAHAWK were my
second and third anime models ever, bought for a pittance at an office
supply store, of all places). Every time Bandai regurgitates the MACROSS
line, I always hope for a little more than we end up getting... and of
course we never do.
I don't know what they are doing with all those molds... I mean, where's
the TOMAHAWK? Where's the SDF-1? Where are *any* of the REGULTs??? ARII
sits on its molds too, and it really annoyed me to see the 15th
Anniversary come and go with nothing more than the usual rehash to show
for it (Jeez, Bandai couldn't even be bothered to reissue the 1/100
ARMORED VALKYRIES or the coolish SD series from the previous revivals this
time around... feh).
I wonder what the deal is? I suppose it's possible the molds for certain
kits don't exist anymore... too bad, 'cause I'd love to have duplicates of
some of these things, and for you M-fans out there who can't afford the
old ones, some of them are verrrry nice, too. That 1/72 REGULT... what a
beauty that thing is... as close to flawless as they come circa 1984. Ahh
well, there is always 2002... and maybe some enterprising upstart company
will find a way to make these rare kits available to the fans again...
either that, or you'll have to pay through the nose when I finally unload
mine.
MACROSS got me started on this whole mecha kick... there's never been
another model series quite like it. I think both ARII and BANDAI are
sitting on top of some very serious dollars which they COULD be making off
of these more obscure kits, particularly with a wide release in this
country. At least someone had the good sense to re-release the ZENTRAEDI
ships.... uhhmm, did anyone actually buy them ,though?
Memories, babe... but I'm trying to stay focused on the here and now... as
in, I want enough money to snap up all the GWEW kits, and a PG EVA-01, and
a nice black Integra, and an apartment in a REAL city, and a certain
Texas blonde (though she can't be bought per se, it goes without saying
that money wouldn't hurt). Sigh.... it's always about money, isn't it?
Peace, kids... and remember, if it stinks, don't sniff it.

I totally understand!
They just don't MAKE kits like that anymore. Hell, when was the last
time you saw a totally inhumanoid looking kit from Bandai? And those
Macross kits had STYLE too... The Zetraedi ship designs are still
unmatched in terms of pure villany!

Definately true.
In the old days it wasn't unusual to have a new model for EVERY DESIGN
in the series. Nowadays you're lucky if you get anything more than
endlessly regurgitated versions of the 'main mecha', and you're lucky if
those designs don't share 60% of the exact same molds. (Gundam G-Unit for
example).
Sure, they're technically more sophisticated these days, but what's the
point when the designs are all about the same? And are slowly backsliding
into the "Giant Robo" Era of mecha?
>multiple variations of damn near everything, each with its very own cool

Bandai box art has gone steadly DOWNHILL ever since the beautiful
paintings on the 0080-series boxes (The pinnacle of Gundam models in my
eye). Nowadays you get some seedy box art that looks like something from a
production sketch, with a crappy abstract background. The computer
generated MG boxes are the shame of the industry! The box art is SO ugly
in places it's actually _kept_ me from buying the kit!
At least the latest 8MST kits are trying to get back into the 'cell-art'
look of box-covers.

And the prices are steadily going up. Who could have imagined a $50

I remember those days, and those fabulous 1/200 scale kits that just
kicked butt!
Whatever happened to the days when you could get a small, but nice model
for just $2?
>I don't know what they are doing with all those molds... I mean, where's
>the TOMAHAWK? Where's the SDF-1? Where are *any* of the REGULTs??? ARII
I think they figure nobody's interested in the 'bit players', eh? Bah!
The Zentraedi designs were what made Macross so cool in the first place!

Fat chance, Bandai and friends have a stranglehold on the rights to
them.

Or you can save 'em for your grandkids! (Whoops, I actually wrote
"Grandkits" at first!)

Mee! Mee! I love those Zentraedi ships!

Ah, you're giving in to the MAN, man! Fight the power! Boycott Gundam
kits! Sell 'em to me instead! Revolution! Model-Class 1/144 War NOW! (In
the pocket!)

It's always about money, and it's always about models. We who follow the
plastic warrior can never attain peace or satisfaction in this world until
we sit at the injection-molded altar of the never-blinking machine and
raise our Exactos to the exalted 1/1 scale sky, close our eyes, and feel
the soft 'riiip' of splitting shrinkwrap, the smell of long cloistered
release-agents, the soft caress of finely finished plastic parts laced
with the smell of cyanoacryllates and petrolleum distillates.
Go forth, young boy! Rise like a LMHG Evangeleon and seize your destiny
of the dream! Sieze the day! Deny the outside world, close your windows
and shades, unplug your phone, forswear the smelly, soft, skin-covered
masses of humanity, forsake women and men and STAND UP TO THE VICTORY
GUNDAM! There is ONLY Mecha! All else is illusion!

Have you guys ever thought about writing to them? I used to live in
Japan and was lucky enough to buy a lot of kits back in the 80's. At
that time these kits were just something else on the shelves, and cost
around $1 ~ $3 apiece. Garage kits were much more, but were much more
creative. There were/are entire stores dedicated to just scratch
building. Anyway, there was one occasion when I went to the Bandai
factory trying to cash in a coupon for a free Book, if you collected
enough model kits. Turns out they had a run on the things and were
out. This secretary connected me to the guy in charge who came down
and said he was really really sorry, but if I would forgive their
miscounting on the popularity and also the used condition of his own
personal book, he wanted to make it a gift to me. The japanese are
really special people and I bet if you write to them directly and
-not- to some US subsidiary, you would get a response eventually.
They are shy about speaking english, but appreciate it when customers
take an interest to send them a letter in the mail. Another time, I
subscribed to Hobby Japan magazine. The US mail failed to get me a
couple of issues, so I wrote to the magazine and said I missed some
issues, so they wrote to apologize, trusted my honesty, sent me the
back issues plus a gift of another book! I'm telling you, writing
polite letters to them is the way to go.
