Just started airbrushing and I'm wondering what is the correct amount
of thinner to use with the Gunze Mr.Color lacquer based paints? The
guy at the model shop told me 50% thinner and 50% paint. Then I tried
it and it's like water! Won't adhere and keeps running. Now I'm
doing like 20-30% thinner. What is the optimal amount? Or is there
some site online with the details for this? I'm considering switching
to Tamiya acrylics b/c the Mr.Colors are just so small and expensive
campared to the Tamiya.
Also, about how many coatings do you guys normally apply?
Lastly, what's a good way to light up the eyes? I assume people buy
diodes with batteries or something. What is a good diode for this?
How do you insert it? And do you get them from places like Radioshack
or something?
Thanks for all your help! I really appreciate it!

the beauty of lacquer is that you can apply it very thin
apply a thin layer, mist it on
do not apply a thick layer of paint onto the model,
if you do, then it will not stick and start to run
r u using single action or double action
double action airbrush, i usually pull the trigger back about 1/4 to spray
adjust the flow so it sprays thin coat, and build up your coat of paint
because lacquers go on thin, you can apply many coats and still it looks
like one coat
for a tamiya car model, i applied 10 coats very lightly so that i could
polish
the paint afterwards, this thickness is equivalent to 3 coats of tamiya
acrylics
hope this helps

Thanks for the reply. I'm using this cheap airbrush I got just to
learn the technique, so presume it's a single action? Anyways, thanks
for your information. I didn't expect that I would need to apply so
many coatings. About how many bottles of MrColor do you go through
per kit then, say a 1:100 MG or similar?
With airbrushing, a little paint goes a long way.
If you're spraying a main body color, you should be able to do the job with
one bottle.
Maybe two if it's a really large kit, like a GP-02A.
Are you Priming your model? Sounds to me like you don't have any primer or
your paint isn't sticking to your primer. Sometime you should apply Primer
to you kits before airbrushing them, it helpsa lot. But 1:1 is generally a
good airbrushing ratio, and keep in mind that you'll probably need more than
one coat in some places/models.

LED's usually work for lighting up eyes, you can find LED's, resistors, and
batteries at any electronics warehouse, and also some models shops will
carry overpriced ones. Make sure you know how to wire the circuit too..
Mark Wilson has a page on wiring LED's and figuring out resistance...Can't
rememeber where it is, though, Mark.

You kind of need to know what your power supply will be before you get
too into it. Most Radio Shack LEDs are fine; you just need to pick
the one that fits into the head. Also note that LED are usually
directional--the rounded tip LEDs only shine straight out of the tip
(Like a flashlight). You will have to make sure the LED can shine in
the direction you need, so it has to be able to fit into the head to
point where you want it. Take a look here:

and here for an application:

I can use a watch battery about the size of a dime to power the Green
LED, but I wouldn't want to leave it on long.
