[Q][OT] Where to get info about ART IN JAPAN?

else to ask of this kind of subject. Assuming that there are actual
Japanese people lurking around on the groups, I had to post this
question to solve my curiousity. Some of you guys will know how
arrogant I become when it comes to 'art'. But I can't help it. I was
trained in a very straight foward manner, from basic still life to
really, really heavy emphasis on figure drawing and painting with oil
an stuff. Practically I was trained to draw and paint like John Singer
Sargent or Andrew Loomis...or Glen Orbik ^_^;
I was really curious about overall art education and art business in
Japan. I know that Japanese art field is largely dominated by graphic
design, but know about almost nothing else. Part of the reason why I
am asking of this is that I have seen very, very, very, very few
people who create anime-relateed artworks with oil/acrylic paintings,
with more 'traditional,opaque' painting technique. Practically 99% of
anime-related artworks are done with either cel-illustration/color
ink/marker/B&W ink or watercolor.
For example, you guys haven't seen that many Gundam illustrations
painted with oil or acrylic. (no, not that Kunio Okawara's hack job
paintings)
Do they ever teach how to paint with oil in Japan? Considering the
popularity of anime in Japan there should be at least a dozen
illustrators with oil/acrylic painting background who do anime-related
artworks. Hey, don't you guys think it would be really cool to see any
mecha illustrations done with the look of realistic oil paintings?
That was what I really wanted to see, but I scarcely ever seen that
style of works from Japan.
So let me rephrase my question. Do they ever teach how to draw and
paint in 'western' way in Japan?
