Well, any minute now Shinji will be concieved, causing the second
impact, so I thought it was a good time to post an explanation of
Evangelion, mostly the movie...

Here is my explanation. I know much of it may seem odd at first
glance, but please respect my efforts by internally deciding if what I
say is correct without holding too firmly to any of your beliefs.

This is a spoiler.

Asuka is pregnant at the end of the film. Now I will explain why.

Lets start with a quick look at the first 24 episodes. The story
starts with Shinji without any legitimate past experiences doing
anything but schoolwork. His father, a representation of Shinji should
he remain the way he is, basically tells him to grow up and go through
puberty and reach manhood. All 14 year olds must do this in some
respect. The inciting incident is when Rei has fallen from her gurney
after the angel attack caused falling debree. The Eva, representing
Shinji's mature body, protects him, but now he must save the damsel in
distress, be a man, and go fight instead of running away to childhood
simplicity. In a phallic device, Shinji is inserted into the eva at
the back of the neck, where it is said that God and the devil take out
and put in one's soul. He launches and faces the angel in his neophyte
state, not used to the new strength and awkward body. The angel
attacks with spurs from his hands and blasts of crosses. This angel
Sachiel represents the messiah that tookl the sins of the world upon
himself but could not take the burden, so gives them back with great
vengeance at the people who forced him to martyr himself. The spurs
from his hands represent the nails driven into Jesus's palms, Sachiel
now using them to harm others. Shinji is the unwilling messiah of this
story. In order for Shinji to grow, he must overcome this mindset
represented by Sachiel, thus purging such mindset from himself. Of
course violence is more effective in this case. The Eva's left arm is
broken, that arm representing the arm of shields from the caballah,
which provides the warrior the power of his ancestors. After the
braincage (the logical mind)is overcome, Shinji goes berserk, dictated
by his instincts to destroy in order to survive. To do this, Shinji
rips off one of the ribs of Sachiel, who is Adam, the rib representing
woman, Eve, and attacks the S2 unit, his heart, with it. Rather than
allow himself to be destroyed by woman, he attempts to destroy himself
and take woman with him. Imagine this: A man is so distraught after
all of his failed attempts to date or get to know a girl that he
decides he is going to kill himself and the girl too, rather than let
her destroy his heart.

THe entire series drips with such symbolism. Other important parts
leading up to the EoE explanation...

In Genesis and the caballah there is a wealth of references. First
there was the world of Edom with people not created by God. Without
god's balancing force they destroyed themselves. God then created Eden
with Adam, the reflection of god. His was all things human in one
unit. He lived without any contradiction. THere was day without
night, life without death, etc. He was bored (as any of us would be)
and asked for a mate. God created Lilith in the same way as Adam,
therefore she was in herself all things human, both yin and yang, just
like Adam. Since they didnt complement eachother (neither felt the
absence of the other) God created Eve by taking away a piece of Adam.
Adam now felt the absence of a piece of himself, and Eve the same.
When they came together they re-created the image of god. Lilith was
nothing more than an attempt by the father to create a being that would
fill a gap, but she was artificial, and had no honest place in the
heart of Adam.

Back to Eva. Rei is not a sexual being, since there isnt need fill any
gap left by a missing piece. Shinji creates her (or rather his ego,
Gendo, does) to fill the gap left by the absent Eve. SHe is both yin
and yang. Asuka is the supernal Eve, and Shinji is Adam. THis is
where the AT fields come in. Each of us has a shield of sorts that
protects our psychological emotional centers, our hearts. This is the
device that makes us defend ourselves (self preservation) and defines
our own personal space. In order for Adam to reach out to Eve, both
must let down their absolute terror fields so their souls can be one.
So Shinji must open up his AT field and pass through Asuka's AT field
in order to share love. All of the science fictional elements mask the
character drama underneath. Notice: The two learn to dance together,
much like all kids do, they talk dodgingly about sex, they deal with
the puberty issues in their own ways. Shinji is always trying to get
closer to Asuka, trying to kiss her and such (in the beginning).
SOmetimes she lets him close, and then while his AT field is open she
strikes with feminine force (a rib crushing his heart). So much
happens that I'd need hours to type it all.

In the last four episodes you have Asuka dealing with menstruation, a
very difficult to understand time for guys. Shinji starts thinking
that Asuka's AT field while never let down and then starts exploring
other options. In his hatred for what Asuka does to him, he creates
Kaworu (just as he created Rei and all of the angels, in his
derision). Since he cannot understand woman, he finds affectionate
contact in Kaworu, a man, thus someone he can already understand as
well as he understands himself.

Instrumentality is losing your virginity, hopefully prolonging your
seed. It is the absolute contact with another person.

NERV, SEELE, and the rest of the brass all represent parts of Shinji's
fractured mind. Guess what the Geo-Front could actually be.

Kaworu has no problem interfacing with the Evas (mature bodies without
inner children). Kaworu wanted Shinji to kill Asuka's mature body
because thats what he was created to do, to destroy any sense of woman
from Shinji's mind. In a way he is homosexual, but mostly male rage.
He gains entry to terminal dogma (the sexual center) with ease because
he knows what to do. After Kaworu sees Lilith growing on the cross
(Lilith represents the shapeless absence in Shinji's heart, and his
growing understanding and hatred of woman) he realizes why Shinji
created him. Gendo says something to the effect to Eva1, calling it
Yui, that the lance of longinus no longer stands in the way. It was
keeping woman from making contact with him, and it represents nihilism
and sexual potency. So Kaworu says that if he lives on the human race
will die. He is refering to Shinji not reproducing. Since it all
depends on Adam to father the human race, and most every male must
burden this instinct, if all that is left outside Eden (Tokyo 3) is two
guys, the human race will die in one generation. He then asks for his
own destruction, the destruction of Shinji's homosexual tendencies and
hatred of woman, so the human race can continue on with Asuka.

Shinji masturbates to Asuka, his own absolute supernal Eve, and calls
himself messed up. Now that he has the mindset of guilt for killing
Kaworu, he feels as if justice (the UN forces) are coming to put him to
death before he gets any closer to instrumentality. Asuka rebuilt her
sense of self by determining that he power came from creation and
defense of creation, thus the "mother is my at field." When the massed
produced Eva's are dropped they are loaded with the dummy plug built
off of Kaworu, Shinji's hatred of woman. These sperm colored phallic
cross shaped creatures are stacked against asuka in Shinji's moment of
total weakness, his instincts gone berserk. I believe that this is
Shinji's view of sex, and all of this battle is symbollic of sex. This
is what Shinji thinks he is doing to Asuka, with his male potency
weapon now colored purple (Shinji's mature body). Asuka is profusely
bleeding from her left eye, the eye according to the caballah that
casts light upon the world so everything is seen in its true form.
There are incedences throughout the series where one eye is shown with
some special attention to it. Check it out. Asuka is torn to pieces.
Metal rods pierce her belly (sperm?). Misato gets him to go back out
to battle by tempting him with sex, her way of dealing with many
situations. SHe says, after falling, "Did I do the right thing,
Kaji?" In death, she gets what she always wanted, Kaji, but it is not
real, for it is the false matter that is Rei. She sees Kaji, though.
Shinji finally arises to the occasion and realizes what has happened,
and instrumentality begins. It goes through a process where Shinji is
forced to become the messiah and accept his pain. Around this time Rei
takes the Adam embryo from the hand of gendo into herself and joins
with Lilith to begin the process of self destruction. After a bit with
a giant Rei/Kaworu, Shinji becomes the Tree of Life.

Now it is very internal. Shinji is with two girls building a sand
castle. THey leave and he is left with an accomplisment in solitude.
Here he divines that no matter what you accomplish it is worthless if
you have no one to share it with. THere is so much in this segment to
explain, trust me I have picked it to pieces. What follows is Shinji
topless laying on a bed with red (Asuka) hair dangling over him as if
she were laying on top oif him. It shows Kaji and Misato having sex,
Shinji not accepting the duality of the act, with Asuka saying that she
will end up like Misato someday. Shinji and Asuka are to kiss, in his
moment of weakness she tears him apart, he longs for her. On the train
she says she knows she is his jerk of fantasy while having her breasts
thrust in his face. He cant figure women out. He walks into a room
with Asuka sitting. He asks her how she feels, etc. She tears him
down again in her uberwoman way, his anger at not being able to get
close to her drives him to try to kill her. A rush of images floods
his mind. There is are numerous juxtopositions of affectiuon and
violence. SOmewhere in one of the flood scenes it shows a pan of the
Rei body-part tank. It quickly pan back to show Shinji in the place of
Rei. After Lilith and her egg arise, everyone is being brought back to
the point of just Adam. In the caballah, it says that all the men of
the world are Adam and all the women are Eve. To bring them together
Rei is used to fill in the empty spaces (as Ritsuko, Misato, Yui,
etc.). Shinji, unable to comprehend woman and hateful of the spaces
between people, asks to have everything return to Adam WITHOUT Eve,
where he was all he knew and there was no contradiction. The curse of
Adam and Eve outside Eden was that they would now know contradictions
and live with uncertainty. Lilith's egg is the beginning of all in his
mind, a return to the womb. In all, it represents the ultimate
fleeing, suicide. Shinji goes into a vagina on the forehead of
Lilith. Another flood of imagery with growing spatterings of blood.
Then there are images of the violence of sexuality, pictures and
diagrams of genitals (its all there). Then the live action sequence
that tells us this is not a story about cartoons and robots but the
duality people, like you in the audience. It shows three women (seen
in the trailer), and then three woman (a live action Asuka, Misato, and
Rei). Shinji then starts to figure out what he did was wrong, and
thanks Rei. Rei and Kaworu (who are merely facets of Shinji anyway)
discuss the situation, his intentions, the nature of self definition,
which causes Lilith to fall apart as Shinji allows pain back into the
world. NOTE* Read "The Beast that Shouted Love at the Heart of the
World" by Harlan Ellison. The lance of longinus unravels so it is now
representing potency with duality. Shinji has had sex with Asuka and
has come to terms with what it means. I cant find the exact phrase,
but in the kaballah there is mention that a man will know his mother as
woman until he knows his bride as woman, but he shall never know his
mother more or something. This is what happens after, where shinji
says goodbye to the only affectionate female he knew up til then, his
dead mother, and rises to the surface of the water to enter the real
world of contradictions and pains. Shinji's mother than says that as
long as the Eva (Mature bodies with souls) exist, the human race will
exist. As long as there are sexual beings with the power to make it
all the way, their will be human life.

Now think about your losing of virginity. Remember how everything
changed, inline with this interpretation?

Then there is the only thing that has ever left me in total awe,
experiencing something absolutely greater than myself... the
conclusion. Shinji is not complete, he still has a bit of Rei in him
and still hates Asuka while loving her. He is still dealing with the
pain of real life, where you hate the owns you get closest to, but you
get close to them because you love them. Reference the song that
closes the S2 cd collection...

You can search a million years / to find that heavens too far away from
here...
would you find revenge so sweet / make it so your hearts never beat /
squeeze the breath from all your hopes and dreams...

Shinji stangles the harmless Asuka. She, for the first time ever,
shows true affection by touching his face... all that he ever wanted
and dreamed of, the very homeostatic desire that dictates everything in
the entire series. This stops him, he cries, she looks at him and she
tells him how she feels. "I feel ill." Now this can be taken to mean
many things, and I think with all of the sexual imagery and matters
beforehand she is saying she has morning sickness. Now she could mean
something else, but a woman with morning sickness does sometimes
say "kimochi warui." At any rate, she is telling him how she feels.
Now isnt that the most romantic, tremendous interplay between two
absolutely brilliantly designed characters you have ever experienced?

Please, if you have hate mail or deriding comments please try to keep
it on topic.

I have taken apart every bit of this series, too much to type at once.
I love to test my theories so please promote good dialog!

Hmm. "No comment" on the rest of this, but one thing I noticed you didn't
note....

When that cross 'penetrates' the vagina, we thousands of little white Reis
swimming inward. A fairly seedy image, we could say...

Asuka is pregnant at the end of the film. Now I will explain why.

Woo Hoo! I am not the only person who thought about this. Her line at the end
of the film which was "I feel sick" made me think she was pregnant. Considering
all the biblical refrences in Eva, it is not a far stretch for Anno to make
Shinji and Asuka, a reluctant Adam and Eve. BTW, Does the giant, cracked head
of Rei at the end of the Evangelion movie remind anyone else of Planet of the
Apes.

There is a problem with that interpretation of the 'I feel sick' line.
Legend has it that it was not the original line written by Anno, which
was something like "I don't want to be killed by someone like you."
Asuka's seiyuu despised the line and refused to speak it, so Anno came
up with something else. It was a spur-of-the-moment substitution, and
therefore is unlikely to have a far-reaching meaning.

Gotta love a thread whose title proclaims it not to be conjecture, and then
throws out some (thought out, but still) conjecture.
I'm still of the opinion Anno did the movies just to screw over anyone left
whining after the series ended, regardless of original ending intent (which is
fidgety, since other things were lied about, as far as the way the series would
play out). But I just watched Casino for the tenth time or so, so what do I
know?

I suppose I never thought of it that way, and would probably have to read
the post in greater detail, but I wouldn't be surprised if I found it to be
true. This series seems to be chock full of references to sexuality and
pregnancy- like the cockpit of the Eva being like the mother's womb, the Eva
Unit 01 bursting out of the sphere in episode 16 as representative of giving
birth, for starters- and everything in the post seems to add up.

The Adam and Eve thing, though, I pretty much figured from the first time I
saw the movie. I mean, "Neon Genesis Evangelion" does translate to "Gospel
of the new Genesis", after all. And it does look like they're the last two
people on Earth...

Very enlightening post, and one I'd like to look at some time again.

So then the humans that are still virgins didn't get turned into liquid

I thought the visuals in End of Eva were very disturbing...but NOTHING is
more disturbing than the thought of the entire human race being continued
from Asuka's angry mental offspring...

Nothing really changed inside me when I lost mine...it was just kind of
like, hey...it's over... already? (At least I'm honest).

You're theory is as good as mine or anybody elses...but I think the fact
that we would have to think up an explanation to this extent just to try
to rationalize it shows how many holes really are in EVAs plot...

Judging just from material within the show, and not looking at external
information, this is as plausible as most other theories about Evangelion.

I am begining to think that Evangelion can be classfied as an "open
interpation" show. Meaning that Anno whether it was on purpose or not created a
show with so many loose ends and loopholes that almost any theory can be
considered valid because almost everything in Evangelion is open for
interpation, just like Jews and many Christain sects consider the Bible is open
for interpation.

Careful, I got flamed once for daring to suggest that people should watch
Eva (TV and movies) with an open mind (watching it several times, of course)
and decide for themselves what it all means. I guess the flamer in question
was sure his interpretation was the correct one. ;-)

Oh! Oh! I just thought of something. You know how Shinji's EVE is purple,
and Asuka's is red? That's some further sexuality right there (let's
hope I don't have to spell that one out). Don't know what to make of Touji
or Rei's EVAs though (Touji's was modeled after his windbreaker, and Rei's
changed color!).
