What's funny is that it was reviewed in the Restaurant Review section, as if
anyone goes to a Maid Cafe for the food... <L>
It's only too bad that the reviewer was a girl - I'd like to read the
impressions of one of the Star's younger male restaurant reviewers... <L>
And no, I haven't been there - it's on the other side of town (an hour's
drive in the usual traffic).

Well, that's just it:
You can imitate the Trend (it was started by a pair of J-trend aware
university students), wear the costumes and even serve the cuisine,
but...without the messed-up customer kink to begin with, all you'll have
are everyday mainstream customers saying "Nice outfits."
(Which is the part of the whole mystique about Tokyo fetish-niche cafe's:
Deep down, we have a sort of respect not only for how much weirder
*their* kinks can be Over There, but how open they are about it--
Every time there's headlines about the lastest Catgirl Nurse Cafe', we
may laugh, but secretly we're like the boys in that Azumanga Daioh
episode, when Mr. Kimura shouted "I like high school girls in
swimsuits!", and all the boys were inspired to tears by his honesty...) :(

I didn't know you were in Toronto. I attended 7th grade at Winona Dr. Jr.
High (a very long time ago). I read the Star Daily but mainly the front
page and the Waymoresports section. I guess I need to keep tabs on the
Life section so I'll know when the Ouran High School Host Club opens up a
Toronto Chapter. ^-^

Don't forget to give us an in-depth review when you get back. (If you get
back? <L>)

So was the reviewer using the term "kitsch" in a good light or bad one?

I'm guessing in a less than positive light... <g>
There was a photo in the actual newspaper, but it mainly showed one of the
waitresses and not much of the restaurant.
Dave Baranyi
"NOISE: Blaring Chinese pop music" Chinese? I wonder if the
restaurant messed up the concept (presuming that maid cafés aren't
popular in China), or if the reporter just made an incorrect guess at
the language.
I had to rely on Mapquest, but it looks like it's not exactly near
where Animé North will be this year, at 970 Dixon Rd. That's too bad.

Hey, didn't we see the "Boss" in a recent episode of "Welcome to the NHK"?
<LOL>
Anyway, there's no Dim Sum, so they won't be getting my business soon...<g>
Dave Baranyi
Ah, but they have corned beef sandwiches and fried squid. And you can get
fries with either.
Bloody "flash" site.
