Oh yeah. No problem there... what you describe is Galaxy Express 999,
which was both a TV series (originally running in 1979-1980) and the
subject of two movies (Galaxy Express 999 and Adieu Galaxy Express).
This show was the creation of Reiji Matsumoto, and was directed by the
incomparable Rin Taro. One of the best that ever was, IMHO.
Apparently, there is a move afoot for an American release of some or all
of this show... though my info hasn't been clear on whether the release
will include the TV episodes, the movies, or both (I would guess the
movies, just from a logistical standpoint- there were 110+ TV episodes!)
Hosever, given the company that has expressed plans for this release (Viz
Video), there is reason to worry that the only release forthcoming in a
reasonable amount ot time would be a dub, not a subtitle- which IMHO
would be a crying shame given that the original voice acting in GE999 is
EXTREMELY good, and apparently very hard to duplicate in English from a
quality standpoint (it's already been tried more than once before, by
people *including Roger Corman*, and none have come very close to equalling
the original IMHO)...
Apparently, there is a long-standing subtitle of the first GE999 movie
from a theatrical print floating around- I have seen a couple of copies
of it on tape, unfortunately none being very good copies (the animation
was very dark to start with, and given that the film subtitles don't
transfer very well to video anyhow, the result was the subs were VERY
hard to read, or even SEE in some cases)
As for Adieu- there was a fan-sub done recently by Corn Pone Flicks
(like a year or so ago), a filmmaking, subtitling and parody group from
Atlanta GA. Various anime clubs and traders should have copies of this
by now, and some of them should be willing to trade copies *until the
official release is at hand* (see various anime fan references
for details on who, what, where and when to contact these kind of folks)...

That was very good and quite thorough. Porbably the only thing I would
add is that the TV episodes were recently released on video in box sets
in Japan. The TV series was shown, with subtitles, on US TV (as recently
as a few years ago in New York City). I've often wondered who has the
rights to those subtitled episodes, and whether the owner has any plans
to distribute then on video.

Those were done by Hawaii's Nippon Golden Network back in 1980. Apparently
they still have the rights, since I've seen them on the air as recently as
two years ago (Unfortunately I have nowhere near all of them on tape even
now).
