On one of the webforums I read, it came up that "I told a girl that her
pink hair looked stupid" was a quick way to a world of hurt. I'm
wondering whether that's always true...

Steel Angel Kurumi - she'll beat you up herself.
Utena Tenjou - as Kurumi, but with a sword.
Chibi-Usa - Sailor Pluto would get upset.

Any more... and any counter-examples?

Lucy/Nyuu, Elfen Lied: She'll tear you to pieces.
Nana: If she calls you Papa, accept with all possible grace.
Kusajishi Yachiru, Lieutenant of the 11th Division: known to attack anyone
criticizing her.
Katsura Hinagiku: Caution advised, but mainly a threat to combat butlers.

As a counter-example, Miyuki Takara from Lucky * Star.
Kagami may occasionally raise a lump on Konata's
head, but really none of the Lucky Star girls is inclined
to violence.

It took a while to recall them, but a couple of counter-examples:

Nene Romanova (original; the other Knight Sabers would just laugh)
Miyuki Takara (she'd just look sad and apologize)

Well, "real world" violence anyways. Konata and the teacher both play
Phantom Brave and MMOs. I know from personal experience you can't get
past the first map of Phantom Brave without violence.

Sorry to have went off topic there. The only counter-example I might
mention that hasn't been said yet would be Madoka from Puella Magi
Madoka Magica. So far as I've seen (the first four episodes), she
would only consider violence against witches, and even then only at the
hands of magical girls.
