Howdy!

Well, now we know where Kaolla Su comes from - India!

She's in Betterman eps 6 to 8, it looks like. Her, or her twin
sister.

And seems to have a thing for another "Kei" - Keito (Keita? Dang,
need to adjust the focus on these glasses ... err, the TV), along with
Keitaro.

(Was it just me - or did someone else make that connection?)

Hinoki seems to need a big dose of self-confidence.

And on to a question ...

Is it just me, or is "Betterman" Hinoki's older brother? Feel free
to ignore this, if it spoils the plot any.

Nice try, but BZZZT - the manga reveals where Su comes from, and it sure
ain't India. :D

I thought the anime did too. It was some fictional country in or around
the East Indies (Burma, Malaysia, etc.)

*patpat* S'ok. ^^

To answer the divergent reponsesm, Mutsumi shows the gang a map of the
island right before they leave. It's a polynesian island prett far from the
mainland actually.

Naah, I wasn't 100% serious either *points to smiley in original post* -
just my rabid_LH_fan-ness acting up.

and btw, said island has an air force... of airships... with gun turrets

So, make it "SOME island" then <grins>

But, seriously, didn't the Indian girl look a LOT like Su? Was also
into mechas (in more ways than one!), and ends up helping the main character
of the series.

Just struck me as odd, after reading the "bastard child of Love Hina
and Gasaraki" message earlier.

Prolly not your imagination. :) Su IS supposed to be designed after some
similar looking anime characters (Most of the other girls, most obviously
Naru, are perversions of datingsim girls). Most people cite Ed, but I dunno

Akamatsu-sensei's notes in the manga state that Su was actually an
original character. They wanted a character who was non-Japanese (i.e.
the token foreigner), but didn't want to go the conventional route of
having a Caucasian character, so they created an Indian-looking one.
Further, Su was originally intended to be a bijin (beautiful
girl/person), but they dropped that idea later. The only remaining
evidence of her original concept is in the bit (in manga) where she
"transforms" into an older and more "refined" version of herself. IIRC
in the anime they replaced this with Amalla's appearance.

I wouldn't say replace, since Kaolla still transformed in the anime.
Also, even though she was an original character, I remember reading in
Akamatsu-sensei's comments that she got her rosy cheeks from "another
anime character", who I think is probably Ed. Note that in the first few
chapters of LH she lacked the rosy cheeks.

I stand corrected. Been at least a year since I last watched the anime.

Hmm, I don't remember! Since a friend of mine borrowed the first four
volumes from me, I'm not sure if I'm right, heh. However, I think it's
somewhere in his comments in those first four volumes. I could be wrong,
of course.

It's on an early full-page spread (each character got one) featuring a few
of the 'in progress' version of the characters. Haruka's was VERY different
from her current incarnation. Somewhere early in Volume 1.

Not to mention a peculiar hair choice. A lot of dark-skinned anime charcters
often have red hair for some reason, esp. if they're rambuncious. But a lot
of them also have little rosycheek things (IIRC, nearly the whole cast of
Hale Nochi Guu). On the other hand, people tend to pick out Ed since Su's
also a machine genius, fairly incoherent at times and silly. :)

In anime, red hair has _meaning_ ... just like the color of a girl's
underwear.

I saw those, but don't recall that comment on Su. *goes and digs out LH
manga*

Ah. The comment was in the notes in volume 3, not those in volume 1.
Volume 3 notes feature the characters in their current incarnation.

"Her name was a combination of Lalah Sune and *can't recognize character
name... some other Su*."
"...From the middle of Volume 1, owing to influences from a certain
anime, [we] drew her with pink circles on her cheeks, [her] actions
became a lot crazier, and [she] also [became] addicted to snoozing..."
(from the Chinese translation)

Ayup, sounds like Ed all right.

btw, LH Infinity notes that one of the LH artists' favourite CDs is the
Cowboy Bebop OST, and they often play(ed) it in the studio while working
on the manga.

Actually, the colour isn't as important as the pattern, or any graphics
thereon.

"I thought I saw something extremely cute..."

Red hair doesn't seem to have any specific meaning beyond generic
genki-ness. (Compare Asuka, Dita and Lina Inverse.) Except in Tokimemo
and certain other ren-ai games, where red is the signature hair colour
of the main character regardless of her personality.

White hair on a young (or, at least, non-old) character usually goes
with dark skin. I guess it's a case of contrast. (Examples: Aisha
Clan-Clan, Kaolla Suu, Urd)

Pink hair is generally for younger or youthful characters. (ex. Yumi
from Tokimemo)

Purple hair is for the OH-HO-HO-HO-HO! characters. You know who they
are. There are exceptions though. In general, purple (being the
traditional colour of royalty) is for the snobs, the arrogant/"Elegant"
ones, etc.

Brown or black hair is for yamato nadeshiko, anemic/shy characters, and
usually the protagonist.

Pastel hair in cool colours (blue, green) tends to be for shy, reserved
or quiet characters.

Blonde hair is for gaijin, sex bombs, and Older But Still Hot Women.
(AFAICS, that is.)

I think we need an Anime Hair Color FAQ...

Now, how many viewings did it take you to figure out that the cats
were on Sakaki's underwear? It took me about seven ... and, I was folding
clothes at the time (my older daughter has some "cute" panties also, it
turns out. Dunno what they look like on her, but they're rather cute
pictures while being folded.)

If you say so.

<Thinks of Kei's hair on HMM> <bellylaughs>

Don't quite think so, though ... although I'll admit a rather
limited sample size for me.

So, I'll plead ignorance for my skepticism.

A lot of it apparently has to deal with what color skin a character has
maybe? Purple/blue cool colors tend to stand out more on pale skin (which
rich.snob.nadeshiko tend to have) while brighter flashy colors contrast with
dark skin.

Skin's another issue, tho anime gotten more mainstream about using color to
indicate vague 'ethnicity.' Chances are any dark-skinned Japanese folks are
probably the tanned outdoorsy rambuncious type (currently running into the
little girl from Aoi Yori Aoshi actually).

Big exception to the rule is probably the very calm, [supposedly] shy Anthy
Himemiya, although she's rather indian-designed influence and Utena herself
is pasty enough it's moot. <g> BTW, is there any truth to the art
supposition darker-skinned characters (just based on art supplies) were
harder to ink and paint before the advent of digital animation? I know I've
seen manga chaarcters get a slight bleach at times when they got made into
anime, but you see it less frequently lately..

At least one friend claims it's the ONLY reason for being there.

What does it say when I say that it did nothing for me, personally?
Such symbolism tends to need to be pointed out to me ...

(So I'm sometimes slow. I've got a warm, real woman to sleep with,
my wife for almost 20 years now. The pictures NEVER did much for me ... )

If you find one to snuggle with, don't matter if she does or doesn't
like anime. That anime won't keep you warm on a cold damp winter night
