In short, One Piece is about Pirates. But really, it's much more than
that. And if you're expecting anything like "Pirates of the Caribbean"
(the ride or the film), you're quite mistaken. Rather, One Piece is
the story of a young man setting out on a journey to achieve his
dream, and holding true to his ideals. There's a reason that this
series, with over 200 episodes of anime and 34 volumes of manga,
continues to be most popular shounen manga AND anime series of its
kind in Japan.
The gist of it: Gold Roger, the Pirate King, was moments away from his
execution at the hands of the World Government's Marines. But before
he was skewered, he revealed the secret of his legendary treasure, One
Piece: "My treasure? If you want it, you can have it. Seek it out! I
left everything in this life THERE!"
Flash forward 22 years. Seventeen-year-old Monkey D. Luffy, having
been inspired by his hero "Red-Haired" Shanks (who saved his life 10
years before and gave him his straw hat), has vowed to become the next
Pirate King. But to do that, he's got to gather a crew, amass riches,
and get to the Grand Line, where Roger's treasure supposedly lies. And
that's not counting the kind of perils he'll have to face once he gets
there. By where the story is currently, the crew faces the
ever-persistent Marines, other pirates with their own designs on the
future of the world, a shadowy anarchic figure whose purpose is
unknown, and mysterious ancient writings that hint of a sinister and
forgotten past. And that's just the tip of the err... iceberg...
One Piece starts off lighthearted enough, but frequently delves into
emotionally-powerful territory. While few people actually die (as
Eiichiro Oda, the author, feels it unnecessary), each character has
his or her own tragic past, and the deaths that do occur have a
profound effect on the individuals around them. Character development
is a strong point in this series. This is also not a show that (like
so many other shounen series) has fights ALL the time. While those
that do occur are inventive, and on a grand scale (and usually lasting
several episodes), they are punctuated by long interludes of equal
parts plot development and comedic shenanigans.
As for the characters themselves, each one is quite unique. While I
won't spoil any of the details for those who haven't seen the series,
suffice it to say that there's certainly no want for variety in
Luffy's crew. Not only that, but in pretty much every battle, the crew
works as, well... a crew... to defeat their enemy. While Luffy usually
gets in the final blow, it's not without the help of his shipmates
(unlike a certain *other* show that leaves secondary characters in the
dust...). Along with the aforementioned tragic pasts, this gives a lot
of depth and versatility to this motley crew.
For those who've read the manga only, you should be aware that there
are some things you won't be seeing in the anime, regardless of how
much it's censored. The manga is sometimes quite a bit darker in tone
than the anime, and you'll have to prepare yourself for a few items of
censorship that originated in Japan. For one thing, you won't be
seeing the origins of Luffy's scar. Nor will you see Zoro slash
himself in the stomach to give an opponent a "handicap". Nor is there
quite as much blood in the anime in the first place (though there *is*
plenty). Also, note that the beginning of the anime corresponds to the
*second* chapter of the manga -- the very beginning of the story isn't
shown until several episodes in. I'll try and point out as many of
these discrepancies as possible, so irate fans don't go beating down
4Kids' door for the wrong reasons.
Anyway, while there's plenty more to cover, I suppose I'll leave it at
this. While I fear for the amount of censorship that will be necessary
to make it presentable to children (on FOX, no less), I am praying for
it to become popular so that the original version will find its way
uncut to DVD (as Shaman King soon will). Only time will tell...
So tomorrow, get ready for One Piece Episode 1: "I'm Gonna Be a Pirate
King!" (Japanese title: "I'm Luffy! The man who will be the Pirate
King!")

YOU SCREWED ICHIGO, YOU BASTARDS!!!
As far as the "shadowy anarchic figure" goes, are you speaking of the anime,
and if so, pre- or post- Skypiea arc? (It sounds as if you are speaking of
the pre-Alabaster arc.) Feel free to post what ever spoilers you like, I'm
up to episode 202 and if I've missed something obvious (I did miss a bit of
the early Skypiea arc), please let me know.
Thanks -

Didn't you know?
It got overtaken in the polls just before it closed.
Somebody (or bodies) swooped into it
like it was a piece of eBay auction.

Well, Mew Mew was leading until someone unlashed a voting bot that pushed
the car race show from a distant third to first place in a matter of a few
days. :(
So, FOX, when is the only show I do want to watch (Mew Mew) going to debut?

I speak of Dragon, who appears in Loguetown and is discussed at
several points afterward. It seems to me that he will have a more
involved role in the series later on.

Okay, thanks. It's been a while since I saw that part, and I don't remember
him well.

Would someone be kind enough to confirm this once an episode has aired
in the USA? Brigid, er, Lettuce, er, Retasu is in the meganekko

That might not be until next year, but I hope
someone who watches US TV will notice when
it starts. Then again, FOX's random rescheduling
makes it hard to track their programs without
deliberate effort, so it may escape notice.

4Kids is a publicly traded company. As such, they do have annual meetings
for their stockholders at which the stockholders vote. People with enough
stock can attend and collect proxies from those who can't. This is how
companies were pressured to not do business with South Africa during
aparheid and comply with other social causes. If anyone is sufficiently
motivated and resourceful, he or she can find out the 4Kids by-laws for
stockholder meetings, relevant SEC regulations, and the pertinent laws and
regulations of the state in which 4Kids is incorporated to see how much
stock is required to have a vote and collect proxies. We may not be able to
punish them properly, but we can certainly cause them trouble!

Mew Mew may show up as a mid-season replacement,
so probably by the end of the year.
The Fox Box schedule isn't that hard to track actually:

No, it's still lost in limbo. There is no word on when it will appear but,
its FOXBOX webpage remains up...

I've been reliably told that it's on the schedule now. ^_^ Again, my
question from last September is:
Would someone be kind enough to confirm the characters' name changes
once an episode has aired in the USA? Brigid, er, Lettuce, er, Retasu
is in the meganekko gallery, after all...
(I'm not expecting a reply to *this* post until tomorrow.)
Actually, using the closed captioning, her name is Bridget.
Also, while watching "Mew Mew Power", I saw the renaming of FoxBox to
4Kids TV, and confirmed I shall never watch the dub of One Piece.

Don't forget to ask 4Kids for uncut DVDs, then...
Or boycott them outright.
