I was trying to post a new message to a specific newsgroup and my
newsreader posted a set of *unfinished* messages to this group and a few
others.

Looks like I'll be posting a few apologies to the regulars in those groups.

Re-watching "Rental Magica," because I don't want to have to think about
what I'm watching at the moment. (Work's getting hectic again.)

Before that, watched "Full Metal Panic" for the very first time. Why
didn't anybody tell me it was that good a show? (And do I want to watch
Second Raid or Fumoffu next?)

If you want the same show, only more serious, Second Raid.

Well, I've been watching three shows currently streaming,
all in their ad-supported versions.

[] Bodacious Space Pirates. When this started out,
I thought this would be harder science fiction than it
turned out to be, but I still enjoy it. I find myself
making up explanations for apparent holes, though.
For example, why are there so many ways the
Bentenmaru can lose its license? Whoever is
making the regulations must really want to abolish
these "pirates", but doesn't dare. So, instead, he
establishes rules that says that if the pirates fail
to do this or that, then they will lose their license.
So it really is the pirates own fault, isn't it?
But the Bentenmaru should have its own
lawyer on retainer, if not a lobbyist.

[] A Certain Magical Index. For some reason, Funi is
releasing this two episodes at a time, so I'm up to
spisode six, which actually works as a possible
stopping point.

[] Nyaruko. I've seen only two episodes of the full-length
series, and am wondering how long they can go on weirdness
before they get into the rut of generic Magical Girlfriend.
So far it works for me, as I have read a lot of HPL.

() At the present the ads are bearable. A few seasons ago
there was a Skittles ad that was seriously creepy, and
near one election there were some mudslinging political
ads that were annoying, but now it seems to be a mix of
video-game ads and miscellaneous less-well targeted ads,
and I don't even take my earphones off for all of them.

so fscking stupid that I was wondering how they managed breathing. >:(

Rewatching Porco Rosso thanks to netflix. This time around a few things
struck me about the American character Curtis, so I looked it up on
wikipedia and they had this:

the character of Curtis is likely to have been named after the American
aviation pioneer Glenn Hammond Curtiss who, along with the Wright Brothers,
founded the Curtiss-Wright Corporation. His character is also an oblique
reference to Ronald Reagan, in that his ambitions lie not only in Hollywood,
but also the Presidency. In the 1930s this would indeed have seemed
remarkably ridiculous (hence Gina laughing off his ambition), though modern
viewers will gain a satisfied grin from Curtiss on this score.

In the film though, Curtis is said to be from Texas; he is a pilot; he has
Hollywood ambitions; and he has an eye for starlets. This is Howard
Hughes.

I could not bear the end of "first raid"; much of the same. I did
not care for Fumoffu then; the "Second Raid" picked up pace, reduced
filler (from what I could recall through fuzzy memory).

If I could (dare to) do it again, I would watch Fumoffu first; be
generous with skip feature while watching the regular parts in
order.

It could be that other earlier mecha shows reduced my tolerance of
any more such shows. "Big O", however, I can watch multiple times;
"Evangelion" some times, given that I have forgotten Shinji in the
mean time.

Rob, I didn't know there was much difference between FMP & FMP Fumoffu,
but I have watched Fumoffu, and it was a lot of fun. I tried starting
2nd raid, and didn't care for the giant robots (sorry if that is a

The Skittles add with the 50's hair styles? Still see that one a lot on
Crunchyroll. I think I have the Excel mints ad memorized now >_<

I'm trying to watch more shows from streaming sites lately. My Panasonic has
flash support built in, so the full screen option on most streaming sites
works when viewing shows using the TV's browser. It's just more difficult
to pause and rewind for missed subtitles, and the lower video quality can be
hard to take compared to a 720p sub streamed through the PS3.

It was the ad with the young man with a skittles tree growing out of
his body.
He wanted medical attention to have it removed, but his mother was

Why are you watching the ads? It only costs about $7 a month to get rid
of them and get the option of higher definition - up to 1080p. How much
time do you spend each month waiting for the ads to finish and the anime
to start? Is your time worth so little to you?

Haven't seen that one in Canada yet. Some of the funnier ads don't seem to
make it here for some reason. It's like the Super Bowl weekend. I have to
go on-line and search for the funny ads because we got stuck watching the

For me, and I don't speak for whom you're quoting, I have two reasons I
don't pay to get rid of the ads.

1) I only watch a few episodes a month streaming online, I do not have
unlimited free time, and I have a large DVD collection as well. So a
smaller amount of time for commercials than would appear on TV (or the
same amount if I decide to watch some shows on their network sites, but
I gather you're talking about the legal streaming sites that aren't
networks) is a small price to pay for a show I'm genuinely interested
in.

2) With my current budget, that $7 a month (or $84 a year) is better
served paying for my food. I can only take so much unenhanced ramen,
and sugar-rice as I work to pay down my debts I accumulated living
beyond my means when I was younger, and stupider when it comes to
real-world stuff (the DVD collection I mentioned in my previous reason
was accumulated during that time).
