Dirty Pair Complete Art Works book (out now!)

I'm holding it in my hands right now. It's a 7-1/4 by 10 inch
format with 224 pages, 32 in color plus a foldout mini-poster based on
the cover artwork. If you haven't been collecting the old illustration
books from the '80s, then you would definitely want this one. If you
have some of those old books, you might still like to have this (heck,
for $20, why not?).
There are a lot of previously unpublished drawings from the model
sheets (along with many you probably have seen before), with very long
sections devoted individually to Kei and Yuri, as well as to the minor
and supporting characters, the various 'Lovely Angel' designs, much of
the mecha and equipment, and "set" designs (not all of which was
rendered as backgrounds -- see what K&Y's apartment building in the OVA
series looked like...). All of the Classic anime outings are covered,
as well as some of the illos Dokite did later for the various reissues
and items (like the 2002 pachinko game) released since 1990. (Of
course, I'd want still more, including the proposed character design
variations for the different projects, including the work Dokite
submitted for 'Shin Daatipea', but then I'm a completist...)
You'll also find story digests for everything, plus additional notes
(in Japanese, of course), including a short interview with Dokite and
the Classic anime's conception of the WWWA (with organizational chart).
This is definitely a good buy for the money. The ISBN is

It states Dirty Pair OVA release in US had some BGM music changed.
Is this right? Because it's the first I've ever heard of it.
Is it talking specifically about the English audio track or the
Japanese as well?

If you compare the tracks on ADV''s DVDs, you'll notice it

The story was that Sunrise could no longer find the "M & E"
(music and sound effects) tracks for the OVA episodes, which contain
all of the audio material *other* than the voices, at the time ADV was
obtaining license. The problem had to be solved by ADV producing its
own complete replacements.
I have been concerned that this might be the reason (or at least
a major reason) why the TV episodes have not been licensed. Making
replacement tracks for 10 episodes was already a lot of work; this
would be for 26... (There may also be legal hassles -- money issues
seem less likely -- but no one has been forthcoming about any of
that...)

Nothing unusual there, for older shows. Now, when they lost the tracks
for Macross Plus episode 4 within days of finishing it...

A sub only option would be the cheaper way to go. That's how we're
getting Gunbuster, I believe. Then again, if they've already created a
library of sound effects for the OAVs, re-using them for the tv series
wouldn't be that hard. The music otoh would have to be either new or
taken from CD's.

The movies and OVAs that Streamline released did have the
original music; the M&E tracks for those were still available, even by
the time ADV reissued them. However, Streamline couldn't resist
tinkering, so there is inserted dialogue over music or removed BGM in
places in "Project E.D.E.N.", for example, because they apparently
didn't trust American audiences at that time (early '90s) to accept
silences in the way the Japanese do.

I had wondered why ADV didn't simply do that. They were
promoting a few dub-only titles several years ago; the TV series could
easily have been issued in this manner back in '99...

That's exactly the problem: a subtantial amount of the BGM in the
TV episodes isn't on the CDs -- those are just selections. The scores
for the episodes didn't use identical music from one to another; I
think additional pieces were being added to the "library" as the series
went along. (There are some nice passages late in the series or in the
FLAWL episodes that I wish *were* on disc...)

the music; I think most people who commented on it didn't know why the
change was necessary, though...

There are any number of excuses to get it (if you got the money).
$20 per disc is a great price for a VAP issue -- cheapest DP's ever
been available from Japan (the 2000-1 DVD issues were more than twice
that much). And you get new artwork and a booklet including a new
short story by Takachiho! :-))

Really? I'd assume what existed was the Streamline audio track, a mix
of voices and music and not the original separate tracks. They would
have had to return them to the Japanese, most likely, plus that's the
kind of thing that tends to get lost when titles get passed down
through multiple owners like Streamline's have.

The only sub-only releases were VHS versions of Nadia and City Hunter,
available by mail order subscription as a way to get them out while ADV
tried to find a tv network to air them. *IF* there had been terrific
sales of those, then yes we may have seen Dirty Pair done the same way.
Hell, if the Dirty Pair OAV's had sold well we would have seen either a
sub-only release of the tv series by now or ADV would think it worth it
to do a new dub.

The Streamline material became the property of Orion, which in
turn is now the property of MGM. The major issue is that MGM would own
the *translations*, so no one else acquiring a license later to the
titles Streamline published would be able to use those audio tracks in
any case. It is simply legally "cleaner" for ADV to simply go back to
Bandai/Sunrise for the original Japanese tracks and release a new
translation. (The Streamline versions won't appear again unless MGM --
or whoever the then-current owner is -- decides to release them again,
*unless* there is some time limitation on the arrangement with
Sunrise...)

Certainly. The hard fact is that DP has not been a big seller in
North America in any of its versions. We'd have seen new comics from
Dark Horse (in fact, I'm a bit surprised they're taking on the
publication of novel translations this year! [Wow, I can say that now:
it's 2007!]), getting the rest of the anime licensed would have been a
higher priority for all parties concerned, and -- dare I suggest it? --
there might even have been plans for a co-produced project (I'm really
flyin' out there now...).

Given I think this is their best dub, it made me happy :) I encourage
the inclusion of old dubs in all re-releases, if only for historical
reasons. Giant Robo has them, but 3x3 Eyes doesn't.

That I didn't know. However, I'm just as glad that new
translations were done for the DP titles because they were a number of
inaccuracies or plot muddlings in the Streamline versions (to say
nothing of the "telepathy" exchange in "Nolandia")... This probably
isn't the place to get into all that, though.
