Now you know what I've been doing with the big blocks of online time that
I'd usually devote to reading and reviewing Newtype USA. It also explains
why I've been posting the way I have the past few weeks--short posts to blow
off steam!
So much for my excuse. Now on to the Random Thoughts!
Cover: Ghost in the Shell: SAC. I looked at this and thought, how old is
the original? Well, the author of the cover article must have anticipated
this question--1990 for the manga, 1995 for the movie. Interesting how the
time line speeds up closer to the present--another movie and two seasons of
the new series in the past two years! Any guesses for why, other than
nostalgia and profit motive?
Now we have the Anime Network's answer to it being the poster child for the
"fat chance channel" of the cable industry. "They said it couldn't be done,
we proved them wrong!" So, those of you who can watch it, how is it?
And the Altoids gum ad returns for a second consecutive month with "I'm
Gumby, dammit!" Isn't that what Eddie Murphy's version said on SNL?
I looked at the June Animerica and found the answer to my question re:
tracking of ads for Ragnarok Online. The URL for the ads there was
ragnarokonline.com/anime, so, yes, they could see which ad resulted in more
hits, the one in Animerica or the one in Newtype USA. BTW, I hope whatever
technology Samsung contributes to this game works better than the piece of
$#!+ VHS of theirs I bought. The first one came home already broken and the
second one died after one night. The Sony I replaced it with wasn't much
better. It died after 2 weeks! WTF?! Back to the ad--check out the belly
dancer and the swordswoman--sex sells. I wonder who won the chance to go to
Anime Expo for free to watch tournament for the US Championship. Whoever is
going there, keep us informed!
Lots of great giveaways this month. I was selfish and put in my entry for
Miami Guns. My daughter can buy Hellsing and Trigun out of her allowance.
Studio Perriot: Heh, Saiyuki was a Shonen Jump manga, but the audience for
the anime in Japan was almost entirely female, while Maho no Tenshi Creamy
Mami had many male fans. I don't know whether to type "Go figure" or "Some
things don't change from one side of the Pacific to the other"! Speaking of
Saiyuki, Dragon Ball is also based on "Journey to the West". I can match up
Goku in both, and Baiji the pig as Hakkai in Saiyuki and Woolong in DB, but
who in Dragon Ball is Wujing/Gojyo--the cat? And would that make Bulma the
monk Sanzo--or is that Master Roshi? Either one would be just wrong!
As for the answer to the question "which project would you like to remake?"
do any of you think that Uratsei Yatsura really would be remade? Should it?
There is a supernatural element to Kimigure Orange Road? I might have to
watch it now!
Disney may not care about hand-drawn animation anymore, but Pierrot still
does, and they're worried that people with drawing skills may be harder and
harder to find. Is there already a Japanese version of California Academy
of the Arts? Will there be one if there isn't already?
I should inform my fellow generational theory enthusiasts about how there
was GI-Boomer conflict during the '60s and '70s in Japan, even in the
animation studios, but there isn't Boomer-Xer conflict there now. They'd
find that significant.
Gantz: Wouldn't two Kii's, one male and one female, in the same anime be
confusing? Or am I missing something significant? (And the generational
theory enthusiasts would enjoy this anime, too--1990s run amok!)
How long before Kuno Minikuku mo Usukushii Sekai is licensed? In favor of
an early license--GAINAX and Mahoromatic-style fanservice. Against--a long
name!
Now, how long before "Bakuretsu Tenshi" is licensed? In favor--Gonzo, guns,
girls, mecha...and a short name. If all else fails, it could be as short as
"Sex Bombs", although that might get it stopped by Canadian Customs on a
regular basis. I've already commented on Jo's skimpy outfit. Sei looks
like a catgirl, what with the way her ribbon is tied, black leather pants,
and her four-legged pose. While we've seen lots of "upfront" girls, I don't
think I've seen one that features a realistic version of implants before.
Hey, Meg, seen Britney Spears at your surgeon's lately? (Note to self: I
read Entertainment Weekly--do an EW-style comparison between Jo and Rei of
NGE. It should be fun and good writing practice, too!)
Heh, Sgt. Frog is on the cover of the May Newtype Japan (and the cover was
on the inside of the magazine, too), but he was in the June Newtype USA.
Hey, Kerero Gunsu! When is the *anime* going to be licensed?
Last month, a NIN reference in the article title for Samurai 7. This month,
a Pat Benatar reference in the title of the article for Tenchi Muyo GXP.
Who's the rock'n'roller on the writing staff? Speaking of GXP, it may be
heresy to say I like this Ryoko better than the original, but at least this
one won't kill me in a second. She might take a minute or two. Oh, and
(spoiler) who is this little but ancient girl? And she's here instead of
the dog-girl sharing the house with Seina and Amane at the end of the first
volume of the DVD. Hmm.
So Azumanga Daioh is a show that is really about nothing? Would that make
it the anime version of Seinfeld, only with H.S. girls instead of 30-nothing
adults? BTW, thanks to 5parrowhawk abou the heads up regarding Tomo Takino
being a scatter-brained crazy girl. She certainly is! BTW, there is
something about the teacher Yukari that suggests to me that she's the kind
of crazy girl who acts like a Nabiki Tendo who never got her act together.
Nabiki is at least smoother about conning people into buying her things to
eat! Now, if only I could type the rest of this cast as well as Tomo and
Yukari--well, Osaka is a Nine, but that's too easy.
Starship Troopers is not good enough to put on the big screen, but worth a
full-page ad in Newtype. Gee, I wonder if they put the mobile suits from
the novel in *this* version? Nah, but it would help with the audience for
the ad *here*!
If they're really Tweeny Witches, does that make them between 9 and 12?
And, if it's licensed, will it be Tweeny Witches, Maho Shoujo Tai Alice, or
Magic Girl Alice?
Let's see--DearS looks like a magical science-fiction girlfriend show. Am I
wrong?
I've made enough tasteless jokes about Midori no Hibi. Maybe I should just
watch the anime!
Playhut ranks third in ads by licensees this month, just behind Bandai and
ahead of Central Park Media. I hope this hype campaign pays off for them!
Grrl Power was released on DVD here before it was released in Japan? Gee, I
wonder if anyone is reverse importing it already?
Both Cfen Rideout and Jonathan Clements have returned to writing about the
anime scene on their respective island nations. Looks like things have
improved over the past few months. Good. Nice to read happy reports from
them.
CLAMP's Satsuki Igarashi is a Jodie Foster fan. I wonder if any of her
characters show any similarity?
Oh, look, an invitation from the editor of Newtype Japan to the readers of
Newtype USA and Newtype Korea to join in a new version of "Pain and
Pleasure: One Week of Nothing but Anime." I know just the person on raam
for the job. Hey, ELL! You write on your website that you want to be a
professional writer. Here's your chance to turn your hobby into money!
Besides, you don't have anything better to do.
As promised, Gilles Poitras follows through on the columns he previewed for
us four months ago with one on a Tokyo neighborhood/landmark--the Tokyo
Tower. Cool article and thanks! The next on is already on the newstands,
but I'd like to know what's up for August. I know Gilles reads these posts.
Onegai, Poitras-san!
Gokusen was live-action first? Hmm.
Of all the manga inserts Newtype USA has run, Chrno Crusade is already my
favorite--and it's only the first installment!
While Del Rey may have gotten the main Gundam Seed manga, Tokyopop at least
got the Astray side story. Looks cool, even if I'm not a Gundam fan. BTW,
no Del Rey ads this issue. I guess they shot their wad.
Let's hope, like the respective TV series, that the RahXephon movie does a
better job of explaining things than either or both of the Neon Genesis
Evangelion movies!
Has anyone played "pick out the similarities" between the Ragnarok animation
and the .Hack animes?
(Kuso! I just realized that I missed .Hack/LOTB while I was typing this!
Oh, well, onto my rental list it goes.)
Speaking of virtual worlds, at least the centerfold from Magical Play is of
a character with an adult body, even if the reverse has the little girl
protagonist in her magical fish suit (and this came *after* Puni Puni Poemi
and her fish wand, hmm). FWIW, I've decided that requesting the names of
classic characters for the centerfold is a losing game. Pick a character
from an anime or manga that is currently being hyped (this month, I chose
the witch from xxxHOLIC; next month will beYao and Lu from Miami Guns). At
least then you might have a chance to see her or him in upcoming issues.
(Yeah, I'm telling you to game the hype machine. At least you should know!)
And the hype for Kaze no Yojimbo keeps building!
World of Narue--these Magical Girls are science-fiction, not magical, and
their henshin scenes conclude in becoming spaceships. Well, we haven't seen
that one since...Tenchi in Tokyo. Oh, well, it's not a new idea, just a new
turn on an old underused one. At least Ryo-Ohki and Ken-Ohki will have
company!
It looks like the people who answer letters are developing an attitude.
If it weren't for the fanartists, I'm not sure that any Viz anime or manga
would get much coverage here (only 3/8 of a page for Saikano, for example).
Still, an entire page of Inu-Yasha fan art!
Lovely costumes Janessa Pyles! Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame!
Hey all you Megane fans--a girl with glasses in the voice actress feature.
Smart-looking and sexy, yeah! But she plays a boy--Edward Elric from Full
Metal Alchemist. I'm not sure I'll look at Edward the same again. Neither
will my daughter when she gets this issue. Oh, well. Anyway, great article
to read if you're a fan of the series. Key phrase--the truth behind the
truth.
Well, Nadia is being hyped now as a special collection. Maybe Grandis has a
chance as a centerfold!
Does the Candidate for Goddess manga actually have a conclusion, unlike the
anime we've seen so far?
Comic Party: Party Time--I've read this. It's a hoot and it's great to see
doujinshi artists get exposure in North America!
The reviewer of Battle Vixens didn't say so, but it looks like this manga
has more than a passing resemblance to Aika. He didn't approve of it.
Maybe someone should have given this manga to Happosai to review, instead.
He'd have enjoyed it!
And the Borders/Waldenbooks ad still lives!
And the fifth season of One Piece is already for sale in Japan. Well, 4Kids
has their work cut out for them, should they last any longer with this
series than Saban did with Sailor Moon!
I knew there was a reason for all the Gungrave hype I've been noticing--it's
licensed in the US by Geneon! This is why I'm keeping my eyes on Bakaretsu
Tenshi. Follow the hype!
So, Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat is a kid's show. It's a great kid's show. And
the artist is a Harry Potter fan. Hmm, now that's a reason to crosspost!
Lum is also getting a lot of hype. Hmm. Maybe she'd make a good centerfold,
too.
And How to Art is also Sgt. Frog hype in addition to a guide to Photoshop
technique. Nice marketing, even with the Eva Ace pinup (cute, but wrong,
especially the Eva carrying a parasol in the background!) BTW, Ethan should
check out the catgirl on Nicomi.com.
Watching anime is giving the editor-in-chief an existential crisis. Hey,
Gary, we know how you feel!
And that's the end of the random thoughts for this month. Hype-O-Meter
next.

Ages 10, 11, and 12, for the three of them.

According to Newtype USA, her name is Ellis.
They also Sheila with leathery wings as in the promo,
and not the feathered wings she has in the series.

Since the Japanese language frequently revolves around the surname-suffix
method of referring to people, it's not much of a problem - the male Kei is
Kei Kurono (so usually Kurono-kun, occasionally Kei-chan from his friend
Masaru IIRC), and the female is Kei Kishimoto.
> How long before Kuno Minikuku mo Usukushii Sekai is licensed? In favor of

It's a shoe-in for Geneon, but they haven't announced it yet - the licensing
announcements trickling out from Anime Expo seems to indicate they have
Popotan, Submarine 707 (new Leiji Matsumoto OVA thing) and Earth Defense
Family (retitled The Daichis, but YES! YES YES YES! As a Shoji Kawamori
fanboy I feel I can rejoice at this - did this ever get a R2 DVD release?)

There's already rumours that Funimation are after it (they've registered a
domain for "Burst Angel" which is one way of translating the title). I'm
not surprised, it's utter fanboy bait.

It's just been licensed by Media Blasters.

The RahXephon movie is a retelling of the TV series with some added
animation, but puts a totally different spin on it - it's much more focused
on one of the plot threads than the series was, apparently. I haven't even
seen the whole series yet, but I'm tempted to pick up the limited edition
movie boxset so I have an incentive to buy the whole thing eventually!
> Has anyone played "pick out the similarities" between the Ragnarok
animation
> and the .Hack animes?
They're not really very similar at all, aside from being set in MMORPG
worlds. .Hack is a "meta-gaming" anime, I guess - I can't think of another
way to describe it, but the whole point of the show is the awareness of the
outside world outside The World, and the interface between reality and
gaming with the mysteries of the Key of the Twilight etc. Ragnarok is set
literally in the world of the Ragnarok games, and although it plays out like
a bad RPG it doesn't "break the fourth wall" or anything like that - it's
treated like any other fantasy anime. I personally think both .Hack TV
series are vastly superior to what I saw of Ragnarok.

Paku Romi is easily one of the brightest stars of the current generation of
voice actors. Her work on FMA in particular is phenomenal, and she also
voiced Rolan (the lead) in Turn A Gundam - she's definitely one of the most
convincing female-doing-male voices around.

write a "Miami Guns" entry for the Anime Primer (even if I have to do it
myself).

You've lost me on that referene - a "Nine"?
Yukari actually reminds me of a friend of mine, except that she's the
wtrong gender and tends to doze off too often.
Hmmmmm... Sakaki looks somewhat like Motoko from "Love Hina" (and
shares her seiyuu, Asakawa Yuu). However, Sakaki doesn't act like
Motoko. At least this didn't become a running gag...
Chiyo is _just barely_ not competant enough to the a "Mary Sue"

three of them together out there that it isn't outside the realm of
possibility...)

Well, "monk" leads immediately to Kuririn.

I take it AX is big on licensing - this is great! I know it sounds quite
pathetic, but I really enjoy watching everything get licensed so quickly -
it only leads to faster domestic releases, after all, and I can always enjoy
the screaming of deranged otaku as they realise they'll have to start paying
for episodes...

That's why they should have an anime character answer the letters
and change it every six months or a year. The UK comic of Transformers
did this and the new DW comics do it somethings and I think it is great.
Especially when Grimlock was in charge of the letters in the UK. Although
it isn't quite like people would think.
"Hi, Grimlock here. I'm back! I-- What do you mean, you don't think I'm
Grimlock? Listen, I don't always have to...oh, fine. (ahem) Me Grimlock
here!
Me host page! But me no always talk like this. No, I just change all over
the
place! You see, this is how I spoke when I was running the letters page back
in the British Transformers comic! Yeah, I'm that Grimlock! I dunno, what's
a Dinobot have to do to get recognition around here..."

Actually I almost never read your postings <EVIL GRIN>
The current issue has Shinjuku for all you City Hunter fans.
Then comes:
The Edo Period
Followed by one of two possible articles, I wrote on in anticipation of
a DVD review that is coming up. I'll let the editor decide when he runs
these.
Whew two articles (On top of all my other work) in one month!
I have been actually been doing a series on Japanese history as a lead
up to an article on the Shinsengumi. When I started it I realized I
needed to write a series of articles that would give the regular readers
of the column the context that led to the events the Shinsengumi were
caught up in.
Note: There will be a book on the Shinsengumi coming out this Fall but I
can't say when (I don't know the date yet) and by who (they haven't
officially announced it yet). Kind cool since the NHK Taiga Drama this
year is Shinsengumi and I get to watch it subtitled on local, San
Francisco Bay Area, TV.
This wouldn't happen to have anything to do with ADV's acquisition of
Moeyo! Ken, would it...?

1. why? $?
2. there are no new materials, and what ever story/materials they can
come out with would be as bad as Movie #6, for more examples, see all
the City Hunter TV movies. and going back and redo all 300 TV episodes
are simply not feasible.
3. the quality of the anime, by the end of the 80's, are good enough,
unlike the late 70's early 80's anime (Yamato, Harlock, Gundam, etc.)
which are just plain bad. even area-88 remade is quite questionable,
since the old OAV is not bad in comparison.
4. you won't be able to find the same quality, or just the same CV's
voice to play the parts again, why ruining a good memory?

they won't get anyone to draw a new one for it in Japan, they might just
use one of the older pict thought. but consider how old and how
unpopular the anime are in US among the new crowds? doubt it,

why, is "my city" still there? don't think there is a chalk board

it is always my impression, (even from very limited knowledge) that in
reality Shin Sen Gumi are just glorify, romanticized version of the
precursor to modern day yakuza. they certainly are a far cry from the
straight coded samurai before, neither are they anywhere near the ideal
of Chinese wuxia or even Europe's chivalry. they are pretty much a bunch
of thugs, and they won most of their battles because
1, they always act in group and gang up on anyone dare to opposite them.
2, they are utterly ruthless and never hesitate to cute down their
enemy. didn't they burn down half of the city?
even today in animaga and literature, whenever there is a fictionalized
"good" yakuza story, the parallel between it and the "legend" of SSG are
quite obvious.
> Note: There will be a book on the Shinsengumi coming out this Fall but I
> can't say when (I don't know the date yet) and by who (they haven't

the TV series is a disappointment, the one before about the time of
Hidiyoshi and Nobobunga are quite good, the one with Miyamoto Musashi is
simply not as good as the classic movie, (I have seen Mifune' Musashi,
and sir, you are no Mifune!) and pretty much take the easy way out on
all the action sequences, the SSG is even more boring compare to
Musashi, since they get all these singing idols and big breasts models
to play the parts, there is certainly more hypes but not much acting to
speak of. I pretty much lost interests after a few episodes.
I thought she's ok.......all the roles I've seen/hear her doing are mostly
boys(those you mentioned plus Ren in Shaman King) or tomboy girl.(Maki in
Air Master......) She probably isn't too good at playing regular female
character though.(well the competition is more fierce so maybe that's why
she isn't casted that way most of the time?)
I thought it's pretty obvious it's Piccolo.............I remember seeing
illustration like that back in the DB days years ago.
More likely for peace maker kurogane......I think ADV got that.(not
sure....) So so series......kinda boring.:)
>it is always my impression, (even from very limited knowledge) that in
>reality Shin Sen Gumi are just glorify, romanticized version of the
>precursor to modern day yakuza.
I always thought that they are considered (perhaps in a way falsely)
to be sort of the "final" gasp of the Samurai, and so they are
romaniticized because the Japanese see them as the most recent link to
their traditional feudal past. Also they make tragic figures in
stories if they are done right.
-Chris
<blink> That... doesn't make sense to me at all.
Anyway, Piccolo wasn't introduced until well into the series (about the
third major story arc, I think), whereas the archetypical characters can
be expected to appear quite soon if they're going to show up at all.
I have two answers.
1. In Japan, there are several good art schools. As for fine art,
Tokyo Geijutsu Daigaku is the most authritative. More commercial
art oriented schools are Tama Bijutsu Daigaku and Musashino Bijutsu
Daigaku where many designers and artists studied.
2. There are some animation schools in Tokyo. Because animation
is still looked as a sub culture and many traditional art schools
don't teach animation technique, so the animation school business
seems to be a niche market in Tokyo.
Young animators don't get enough income while a successful
commercial artist can be very rich. A brilliant artist leaves the
animation industry and become a commercial artist. Animators
are poor and don't get enough holidays. That's why finding a good
animator is getting harder.

well yes, just like the yakuza or SSG, living by a code, doing what is
right, etc. in the case of yakuza is justice and righteousness, in the
case of SSG is truth and honesty, (symbolized by the kanji word they
carry.) but SSG behave much more similiar to yakuza than true samurai,
behave in a righteousness way and coerce protection money and gang up on
rivals in the name of righteousness are two different things.

well, it is true that the TV ended before the manga finished, but the
major storyline afterward are all animated in various oav (Inaba and the
time travle.) and movie #5, what is left are quite small pieces of
materials and not worth the efforts, even if they ever go back to them
it will at best be oav again, and only for a shrinking adult aduience,
when what they really want to do is to introduce a whole new generation
of younger anime fans to UY with new animation, which mean they will
have to do it from the beginning, the big race, etc. not little piece
meal fashion of the oav.
consider they have rebroadcast Gundam and Macross, and I think UY was
done just 4, 5 years ago on TV, I doubt it very much they will do so.

Nope, the book was in the works over a year ago. And the author is not
an anime fan.
BTW it looks like September or October. I have given him the addresses
of all the anime mags to send press releases and review copies to.

The common Japanese view of the Shinsengumi until recently was that they
were thugs. However Japan is reviewing its own history and questioning
the imperialistic views of the pre 1946 historians and writers.
In reality while the Shinsengumi were often merciless, they did try to
capture their opponents, after all it is hard to question a corpse. BTW
in the Rurouni Kenshin Trust and Betrayal anime what is being hit in the
storehouse is a prisoner.
The samurai were also often thugs who gloried in their higher status
which was granted to them by birth. They had certain laws and codes to
follow that the commoners did not have to deal with but at the same time
were quite arrogant, lazy, and corrupt, as is shown in the Shinsengumi
TV series.
Personally I think the characters in the TV series are far too mild. It
will be interesting to see when they reach the part of the story where
the Shinsengumi are finally organized. Their penalty for any
infringement of their rules by one of their own was seppuku.
> didn't the leader lost his head? in fact, surviving characters like in

He was executed after being captured late in the Boshin Wars.
Kenshin was on the other side and fought the Shinsengumi in the RK
series.

No the pro-Emperor groups were the ones who planned such an attack to
fight against the Shinsengumi and other pro-Shogun forces. Arson has a
long history in Japanese warfare.
Oh, I'll rent it. I'm lucky to live within driving distance of Ann Arbor,
which has two great places to rent anime--Wizzywig and Vault of Midnight.

Oh, it's a reference to a personality typing system I use. It's called the
Enneagram and it sorts people into nine types. Here's a brief description
of type Nine:
Type 9: The Peacemaker
The Easygoing, Self-Effacing Type: Receptive, Reassuring, Agreeable,
and Complacent
Social Role: Nobody Special
Basic Desire: To maintain their inner stability and peace of mind.
Reaction to problems: "What problem? I don't think there's a
problem."
Manipulates by: checking out and passively resisting others.
Attacks by: tuning people out.
Favorite complaints: "The more you bring it up, the less I'm going to
do it."
Basic Fear: Losing connection or being fragmented.
Sin: Sloth
And here are some representative Nines in anime:
Anthy Himemiya (Revolutionary Girl Utena)
Genma Saotome as a Panda (Ranma 1/2)
Hyatt (Excel Saga)
Katsumi Tendo (Ranma 1/2)
Keiichi (Ah! My Goddess)
Melfina (Outlaw Star)
Mihoshi (Tenchi Muyo)
Millie (Trigun)
Miroku (Inu-Yasha)
"Osaka" (Azumanga Daioh)
Shinji Ikari (Neon Genesis Evangelion)
Tenchi Masaki (Tenchi Muyo)
Vash the Stampede (Trigun)
Yuki Saiko (Silent Moebius)
I hope that explains the reference!
FWIW, the Enneagram typing system has already shown up in
at least one anime. In an episode on vol. 3 of the "Love Hina" DVDs,
Kentaro shows up and tells Naru that she's a "Type 2-C Personality
Type" and is concerned with finding love and doing good things for
others. Guess what--that is an actual Enneagram type!

Sorry, I thought the term had been covered sufficiently lately. It's
from fanfiction (specifically "Star Trek" fanfiction, IIRC), used to
describe a character who's oviously better at everything than evewry
other character in the story is, but the other characters like or love
the ultra-competant character anyway. Self-insert characters are often
"Mary Sue" types, with their ability to out-do the canon characters
while having the canon characters fall for them.
(I don't know whether you're a "Bubblegum Crisis" fan - Have you ever
read Bert Van Vliet's "Bubblegum Zone"? SkyKnight is very much a "Mary
Sue", at least at the beginning of the story.
well, it was after all, on public TV design for all audience on prime
time, I think at most they will show the actions but cut away to the
wrong angles, then show the after result like hands flying and blood
gushing, etc. but you won't actually see anything, if Musashi is any
indication.

Yeah, I saw that. Having not seen the show, but only read about it in
Newtype and the "Maho Shoujo Tai *Alice*" threads, I don't know what the
katakana are for her name. Would they transliterate to A-li-su or E-li-su?
> They also Sheila with leathery wings as in the promo,
> and not the feathered wings she has in the series.
There is also a disclaimer in the article which reads "The character
colorations shown here are tenative." This suggests that these are
development/early production art. This may bear on the conflict between
whether the lead character is "Ellis" or "Alice". Maybe the "Ellis" name is
from early in development and it's been replaced by "Alice". Such a thing
has been known to happen before--Hitomi's surname (and personality, and
character design) in "Vision of Escaflowne" for example.

That's the obvious answer for why it should be remade. What's beyond the
obvious?

1. So you don't think it should be remade.
2. See *your* #1 for the only reason that you think it might be.
3. Here's the reasoning given in the article. Yuji Nunokawa, president of
Studio Perriot, was asked "If you could go back and remake any title, which
and why?" His response was, as I indicated by my question, "Uratsei
Yatsura." As for why, it was because it was too much the director's (Mamoru
Oshii) interpretation and not Rumiko Takahashi's. According to Nunokawa,
Madame Takahashi was not entirely satistisfied with how her creation turned
out as an anime. This bothered Nunokawa, so, if he could have it redone in
a different style from the original (inferring a style more like the
original manga or one more pleasing to Takahashi), he'd like to do it over.
Therefore, there are creative and artistic reasons for his desire to remake
the show.

1. I think you misunderstood me, as I 1) should have typed "crazy girl" and
2) defined the term as "hyper-genki and materialistic". Blame my daughter
for that meaning. Blame me for not making it clear. (And, yes, Nabiki is
not particularly genki, but she is as materialistic as they come!)
2. Kodachi is an accomplished naccissist, and she is still the healthiest
member of her family. Her brother is a deluded poseur and her father is an
acknowledged nutcase and menace to the students at his school. Kodachi is
at least functional!
3. I've written about Kodachi's personality before. Here is what I wrote:
Kodachi: 3w2. Her subtype is "The Star" and she certainly presents
herself as one. She's also ruthless in her pursuit of being number
one, considers herself quite "A Catch", is workaholic in her
excellence, and as narcissistic as they come. As you can tell, I
don't care much for her. A few of the posters on alt.fan.utena have
decided to send her to the Ohtori Academy in their fanfics where she
hooks up with Saionji. IMHO, that's a fate she richly deserves!
Enough of the Kodachi bashing. Here's the thumbnail of her type:
Type 3: The Achiever
The Success-Oriented, Pragmatic Type: Adaptable, Excelling, Driven and
Image-Conscious
Social Role: "The Best"
Basic Desire: To feel worthwhile, accepted, and desired.
Basic Fear: Being worthless or without inherent value.
Sin: Deceit (Vanity)
Reaction to problems: "There's an efficient solution to this--we just need
to get to work."
Manipulates by: charming others and adopting whatever image will work.
Attacks by: making others feel valueless by treating them arrogantly
or with contempt.
Favorite complaints: "What do I have to do to impress you?"
This is an Enneagram description, BTW. See the leaf of this thread with Rob
Kelk and David Watson (The Ottowa Crew strikes again!) for more about typing
anime characters using that system.

Ping, I know you're a regular on rec.arts.manga, not rec.arts.anime.misc,
but there was a good discussion on r.a.anime.misc about why recent fans
should care about older anime. It has to do with 1) acknowledging the
efforts of those who made the current boom possible, 2) understanding a lot
of references to older anime in current anime, and 3) insuring continuity of
fan culture. Lum might be a good vehicle for those causes.
I could tell it was, just by the reaction I got to my comments about it a
few months ago. And that's just from a short description and some
production sketches turned into promotional art!

Yay!

AX is big on everything. It had, according to the report on National Public
Radio, 25,000 attendees, making it--again--the largest anime convention in
North America. Kevin Lillard has more than 300 pages of cosplayers on
Fansview from AX alone. Even with the high number of duplicate shots,
that's more than 1,000 (possibly even up to 2,000) cosplayers pictured on
his site alone!

I was never a downloader myself and I paid for my anime, so it's not my ox
that's being gored, although I admit that it feels very l33t to watch a
fansub of an unlicensed anime at a club meeting and know that I'm 6 months

Thanks! Now, if only I'd paid attention to the hype around "Mars Daybreak".
For some reason, I couldn't get excited about that one. Consequently, I was
surprised by the licensing announcement.
As for "Guu" being licensed--ph34r the anime apocalypse! (or, at least,

my obvious question is I doubt it will earn money, remade generally do
not do well. so they usually go for "extension" like Macross 7, Gundam
2, 22, 81, 83, etc. if they want to remake with only the old materials,
the prospect is not good. as popular as Gundam is they never remake the
original, as popular as Yamato is they have problem funding the project
because they don't think it will make money. things like Area 88 were
remade because they are short (26? 13?) 300+ episodes for UY bordering
on impossible.

there are also creative and artistic reasons why UY anime was made
differently from the manga in the first place. it is true that UY
became a "run and being chase" type while the manga isn't, but if you
don't do chase then it would be hard to end most of the original UY
manga stories in anime, (because there is no definite ending for most of
the stories.) not to mention most of the manga chapter are so short
that they have to merge 2 stories, sometimes even more in one 30 minutes
slot. (and in the process change the story somewhat.) I quite enjoy the
difference, if I want something strictly like manga, I will read the
manga, as to Takahashi, sure she is displeased, but not enough to stop
more than 300+ episodes being made and pocket the money, she could have
put a stop to it anytime after a season just like karekano's author did.
but the only thing ever happen is the change of production company once
like w/ Ranma.
so would UY be remade w/ just their current materials? I doubt it very
much, UY's following are by hardcore otakus, unlike the general
following of Gundam, (see #2), and as a fan, #4 is the main reason I am
against it,
but, if Takahashi ever write a script of the UY characters in adulthood?
or even their next generation? I will be game. (kind of like
Miyazaki's critera for doing another Lupin movie.)

should and will are two different things, looking at my UY posters,
pencilboard, postdard, tradingcards, standup, CD, manga, mook, anime,
etc. sure, as a fan I would like to see more UY, but, if I am the editor
of NT USA, I will only base my selction of the centerfold on two things,
either they will help the sales of the magazine, (meaning someone who
are popular and familiar by the American readers.) or if it is from a
title I want to hype, (meaning something new.)
may be it will help if you e-mail them NT editors your reasons, (you

Japan, their freebies are better,

I'm a big Urusei Yatsura fan but the idea of a remake scares the hell out of
me for the reasons named by Ping. Furthermore I enjoy the manga, but not as
much as the anime, because I miss the more crazy "otaku" moments like the
lunatic megane and his stormtroopers, or oshii's plain weird episodes like
the one with atarus mother dream.

I remember reading somewhere that Takahashi hadn't the power to cancel or
alter the show back then, because she was a rather young artist. By the time
of Ranma however she gathered enough power to stop the first season. I think
it was in an old Animerica issue.

It would be okay if all they did was update the animation and keep the same
voice/music track. Otherwise I think it would start to suck like the 10th
anniversary movie.

Uhhh she didn't stop the first season of Ranma. The first season of Ranma
was extremely unpopular but because Takahashi had created it they gave
it another chance and the show did better when they retooled it.

I finally got around to taking the free test myself, and ended up with a
tie between Type 5 (Investigator) and Type 6 (Loyalist). Considering
that I answered all the questions, the program decided that I'm a Type
5. (Type 5: "Independent, innovative, and inventive, they can also
become preoccupied with their thoughts and imaginary constructs." Yeah,
I can't argue with any of that... Type 6: "The committed,
security-oriented type. Sixes are reliable, hard-working, responsible,
and trustworthy." Security-oriented, yes. Committed... well, maybe,
but probably not the way they mean...)

That's strange because according following sites, both seasons had the
same average ratings (9.5%). The first season even had a slightly higher
best mark than nettouhen.
http://home-aki.cool.ne.jp/anime-list/ranma01.htm
http://home-aki.cool.ne.jp/anime-list/ranma02.htm
Maybe nettouhen had higher ratings at the beginning than the first
season but viewers lost interest in the course of the 143 episodes.

Thanks for the explanation. While I can easily find Ranma 1/2 manga, I
haven't read any UY manga, so I wouldn't know.

I've heard rumors that Takahashi's next project will have a science fiction
theme. I rather doubt it would be UY updated.

I agree, except that sometimes something old gets hyped if it is
rereleased--Nadia in a DVD box set, for example. UY is getting that kind of
hype, although not the quantity that, say, Excel Saga is getting.

Hi, Rob! Welcome to the club. I'm a Five as well. In fact, I'm the same
subtype as you, A "Problem Solver" which is a Five with a higher score in
Six than Four. Here's a thumbnail description of our type that I've posted
here before:
Type 5: The Investigator
The Intense, Cerebral Type: Perceptive, Innovative, Secretive, and Isolated
Social Role: The Expert
Basic Desire: To be capable or competent.
Basic Fear: Being useless, incapable, or incompetent.
Sin: Avarice (miserliness)
Reaction to problems: "There are a number of hidden issues here; let me
think about this."
Manipulates by: staying preoccupied and detaching emotionally from others.
Attacks by: making others feel helpless, incompetent, stupid, and incapable.
Also chases people away.
Favorite complaints: "I can't believe what idiots people are!" "Go away--I
need my space!"
Sound familiar?
BTW, here are list of anime characters that I've typed as Fives:
Dornkirk (The Vision of Escaflowne).
Kiyusaku Natsumi (All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku).
Lain (Serial Experiments Lain).
Lebia Mavelick (Silent Moebius).
Misaki (Excel Saga).
Miyu (Vampire Princess Miyu).
R. Dorothy Wainright (The Big O).
Here are some others I'm not sure about:
Conan Edogawa ("Case Closed"): Could be a Three.
Dr. Tofu (Ranma 1/2): Could be an intellectual Nine.
Eutis (Magical Shopping Arcade): May be a Three.
Miki (Revolutionary Girl Utena): He may be a One.
Mizuno Ami/Sailor Mercury (Sailor Moon): Same comment as for Miki--same
Japanese voice actress, too! (Pauses for a moment to remember Rob's late
car).
Roger Smith (Big O): May be a Three.
Washuu (Tenchi Muyo et.al.): May be a Three.
BTW, I have a crackpot idea regarding the Sailor Scouts, the characteristics
associated with the planets by astrology, and the Enneagram, but I'll return
to in a followup.
And here are some typed by others on raam, which I haven't been able to
confirm for myself:
Akito Hayama from Child's Toy.
Heiro Yui and Trowa Barton, Gundam Wing
Kagato, Tenchi Muyo.
Li Syaoran, Card Captor Sakura.
Madoka from Kimigure Orange Road
Miyu, HyperDolls
Oyuki, Urusei Yatsura.
The ninja sidekick in Clamp Campus Detectives.
Well, see yourself in any of these characters? Know of any others that
would fit the description I gave? Do you like the company we keep? ^_^
> (Oh, yes - insert appropriate quote from "The Prisoner" here... ^_^)
LOL!

That's a good test and the one that I first used, but there are others:
http://selectsmart.com/FREE/select.php?client=enneagram (For a selectsmart
test, this one is very good!)
http://similarminds.com/personality_tests.html (warning--it undertypes Fives
and misidentifies many as Nines)
http://www.eclecticenergies.com/enneagram/test.php

http://www.duniho.com/fergus/enneagram/test/test.phtml
Hope these help!
> My highest score was (big surprise) Type 8: The Challenger,
Really! Here's the thumbnail description I have for Type 8:
Type 8: The Challenger
The Powerful, Dominating Type: Self-Confident, Decisive, Willful, and
Confrontational
Social Role: The Rock
Basic Desire: To protect themselves and determine their own course in life.
Basic Fear: Being harmed or controlled by others.
Sin: Lust
Reaction to problems: "I'm angry about this and you're going to hear about
it!"
Manipulates by: dominating others and demanding that others do as they say.
Attacks by: making others fear that they will be harmed or controlled by
belligerent and intimidating threats.
Favorite complaints: "My way or the highway! No one tells me what to do!"
And here are the Eights in anime that I've typed *so far* (Eight is
extremely common in anime--they make for wonderful tough guy heroes,
dangerous villains, and all-around bad asses. They also tend to be real
party animals.)
From Inu-Yasha: Inu-Yasha, Koga, and Naraku.
From Ranma 1/2: Genma Saotome (as a human), Happosai, Ranma Saotome (as a
boy).
From Cowboy Bebop: Vicious, Vincent.
From Castle of Cagliostro: Count Cagliostro.
From Vision of Escaflowne: Dilandau.
From Silent Mobius: Kiddy Phenil.
From Saber Marionette J: Bloodberry, Tigre and/or Pantha.
From Tenchi Muyo: Ryouko.
From Revolutionary Girl Utena: Juri, Akio
From Princess Mononoke: San, Moro, Lady Eboshi, Jigo.
From Ah! My Goddess: Urd.
From Sailor Moon: Hino Rei/Sailor Mars and probably some of the villains,
too.
From Bubblegum Crisis: Priss.
From Metropolis: Duke Red, Rock.
From Outlaw Star: Gene Starwind, Aisha C'lan C'lan, and several of the
villains.
From Nadia: Gargoyle.
From Evangelion: Asuka Langley.
From Spirited Away: Yu-Baba
From Star Blazers: Capt. Avatar, Desslock.
From Record of Lodoss War: Pirotess and the rest of the villains.
From Trigun: Brilliant Dynamite Neon (I'm not sure about Knives).
As I wrote, lots of Eights in anime! Hope you enjoy the company!
> with the
> second highest being (shockingly enough) Type 4: The Individualist.
Here's the description:
Type 4: The Individualist
The Sensitive, Withdrawn Type: Expressive, Dramatic, Self-Absorbed, and
Temperamental
Social Role: The Special One
Basic Desire: To find themselves and their significance by creating an
identity out of their inner experience.
Basic Fear: Being without identity or personal significance.
Sin: Envy
Reaction to problems: "I feel really hurt and I need to express myself."
Manipulates by: being tempermental and making others walk on eggshells.
Attacks by: treating others distainfully, as if others were nobodies and had
no value or significance.
Favorite complaints: "No one understands me." "People are so cruel and
insensitive to me." "Everyone lets me down."
:-/
Are you sure that's you?
Anyway, I only have two characters in anime typed as Fours--Kuno-sempai from
Ranma 1/2 and Rei Ayanami from Neon Genesis Evangelion. Any others that
might fit this description?
> Guess it's extra confirmation of the fact that I can be a difficult person

Nah. ^_^
Still, being an Eight makes you unusual among fandom. Most of the fans that
I've run into are Fours and Fives, although there are Threes and Sevens
among the cosplayers.

Dickhead. dB) I'm glad to be that way, because I've at least gotten some
results that make circumstances, and thus my ensuing attitude, less
difficult. I complain--and do my damnedest to get it heard by the right
people--so that I can help make things better and thus, can complain less
in the future. Letting someone get away with making your life shittier is
giving them permission to do it to you again, and to others.
Thank you. I just took the 9types one and--4 and 8 were still my highest.

Funny thing is that I don't party that much, really (although I have
enjoyed a few good ones); I prefer smaller gatherings myself. Still,
anybody who has followed my postings knows full well that "I'm angry about
this and you're going to hear about it!" is a large part of me. Mind you,
I also let people know when something has made me really happy as well--
even if it's just beautiful weather that day. I fight things that make me
unhappy because I much prefer feeling happy and want to remove the
obstacles to that feeling.
> From Saber Marionette J: Bloodberry, Tigre and/or Pantha.
I just got the box set of this. Yeah, I could see myself being most
compatible with Bloodberry. For more than two reasons. dB)
> From Ah! My Goddess: Urd.
Belldandy's really nice and all, but yeah, I gravitate more towards her.

Gene and Aisha rock.
> As I wrote, lots of Eights in anime! Hope you enjoy the company!
If I am villainous, it's towards people who screw me over. Believe me,
I've got plenty of friends, so it's not like I'm an absolute bastard. And
I'd much prefer the company of Misato over Asuka anytime.

Those are some really broad brushstrokes above--come on, if I knew someone
who was precisely like that, I'd fuck 'em off myself--but I admit that
there is a bit of that in my makeup, esp. the part about feeling
misunderstood. Still, I'm not an absolute miserable bastard, either.

Well, still high in Four, so I'm not that different.
Nope, definately not. Genma is one of the least
confrontative characters in Ranma 1/2 and the least
confrontative martial artist. Would a challenger invent
the crouch of the wild tiger? Genma never seeks fights
except with Ranma and those mostly seem to aim at
improving him. In fact deliberatly letting people who
are angry at him beating him up seems to be one of his
strategies to avoid conflict. He is so successful at
avoiding attention that most people don't seem to
realize that he is easily one of the top 10 fighters
in the series even after seeing a few bits of what he
is really capable of.
I'm not sure which type he is, the other types don't
seem to fit very well either.

Ami might have been a One (with a heavy dash of Four - she was pretty
quiet and had trouble with criticism) at the start of the anime, but I
think she's pretty close to a confirmed Five by SuperS.

I see parts of myself in Kagato and Li, definitely.

He's shown traits from both groups throughout the anime.

That is what he stated as the only way he will do another Lupin movie,
he think the characters (Lupin, Fujiko, etc.) are too old, I can still
dream of a Lupin the IV movie w/ Lupin's daughter (yeah, Miyazaki wants
it to be a girl.) meet up with Clariss's son. the ending of Castle

since Takada is the character designer of the anime Lum (UY), Noa and
Kanuka (Patlabor), Madoka and Hikaru (KOR), Creamy Mami and Fancy Lala,
you can google them up, but the easy way would be to check the cover of

1. there are the regular poster, postcard, DVD (region 2), CDROM,
trading card, plastic model (Gundam), and pencilboard, I have 2 Gundam
Seed and 2 Fullmetal Alchemist pencilboards from them,
2. the poster are better, compare to NT Japan, NT USA's poster seems to

version I think,
3. the NT Japan's regular manga is Five Star Stories,
4. various information booklets.
5. cool Japanese ads
basically, NT USA offer me translated articles which are most of time, 2
months later than the Japanese version, and US fandom news and ads,
which I don't care, (internet takes care of that and much faster.) the
price are quite comparable, ($11 to $10), so I decide not to get

Just like the one school that I know about in the US that seems to
specialize in hand-drawn animation instruction is Cal-Arts, north of Los
Angeles. Also, the fashion design schools are in and around NY, LA, and
maybe Chicago.

And when, if ever, will animators ever become well-paid enough? Or will
there always be a "race to the bottom" for hand-drawn animation?

Somehow, I think that would be too much like the remake of Johnny Quest,
where Race Bannon's long-lost daughter showed up to provide a love interest
for a teenaged Johnny and a role model for the girls in the audience. I'll
pass!

Yes, the manga industry in the US, the one segment of bookselling here that
is actually growing. I had no idea r.a.manga was so moribund until I
started posting here. No wonder you're happy to talk to me!
At least it's not r.a.anime.fandom. That forum is effectively not only
dead, but redundant, as cosplay.com serves the cosplayers, the most visible
faction in anime fandom. The only reason I started posting there was
because Newtype USA introduced a US cosplayer of the month!

Well, I don't think the plastic model will go over here well. The
pencilboard, though, might, as pencilboards are starting to become
collectables in the US.

Looks at poster and centerfold from July 2004 issue. Seem OK to me.

Oh. Well, I can see why that might beat out a serialized volume 1 of
whatever manga Viz is plugging. At least I'm enjoying "Chrno Crusade".

Fair enough.
You're right. It's been so long since I've seen Ranma that all I remembered
was how much he was always fighting and pushing Ranma that I forgot how
submissive he could be, especially to Happosai. Thanks for reminding me.
> I'm not sure which type he is, the other types don't
> seem to fit very well either.
I can think of several possibilities. First, he could be the same
personality type as a human that he is when he's a panda--a Nine. Second,
he could be a Six, which is the most difficult type to identify and
understand and is known for wild swings in behavior. Finally, he's animated
and, while most anime characters contain a kernel of reality to them, even
if it's a stereotype, he could have a whole set of traits incompatible in a
real person, just because it's possible and it's funny. *shrug*
BTW, this post show that you have at least some appreciation for anime
produced before 1991! *snrk*

There are more precise and detailed descriptions around and at least 6
different subtypes of each major type. The ones I'm posting are those I put
together as a guide to behavior during flamewars--notice the emphasis on
attack, complaint, and manipulation, all of which show up during flaming
exchanges. There are other traits I can dredge up to narrow down the
description.

Yeah, but there's nothing artistic or tempermental about Shinji. Actually,
there's not much artistic or tempermental about Rei, either. I just typed
her that way because damage is so much of her personality. She might also
be a Nine, just a very unhealthy one, which is why she's different from
Shinji. There is a concept called "levels of development" in the version of
the Enneagram I use (the same one espoused on the site where you found the
free test, BTW). Here are the titles for Nines at average levels of mental
health/development--the accomodating role-player, the disengaged
participant, and the resigned fatalist--yeah, those sound like Shinji. Here
are the ones for those in the unhealthy level--the denying doormat, the
disassociating automaton, and the self-denying ghost. Ooo, those read like
things I've heard Rei called!

"Washuu has crabs!"
Well obviously. Ranma didn't do that much different over the course
of 143 episodes to keep peoples interest. But in the first season it was
doing badly so they brought Shampoo into the show earlier than she
should have been brought in because the show was doing badly and
Shampoo was doing a popular character. They were going to cancel
it still, but because it was Takahashi they decided to keep it going.
That's what I got a kick out of. It's his burden, and his weapon, too.
Kind of like, "When life hands you a lemon, make an explosive with it and
throw it at them!"

Well, I'm an artist, too--I play drums and guitar, and sing, and have even
written a bit of anime fanfic. Oh, and I can just smell some resentment
from some of the posters here over the bit that I'm sort of leading them.
Well, take some leads yourself, then.

Even if it's nothing to do with getting laid, she's still fundamentally
kind. Remember the early manga chapter when she was shrunk down to kid
size and made friends with the video game-playing boy?

She's legal, has a great face and body, is fun-loving *and* responsible, and
her own issues are easier to work through than the Children's. Benefits,
all. Ritsuko's nice on the eyes, too, but her deeper issues--and the

I think being misunderstood and just feeling like you are are different.
Some people don't give a toss if they're misunderstood. Some cultivate
misunderstanding like red herring so they can be left alone.

Rob will gladly accept, but I don't like beer (yes, some Canadians hate
the taste; surprised?). Sometimes I'm in the mood for another type of
alcohol; sometimes, I'd much prefer some coffee instead. Whatever the
order, though, yeah, it would be nippy to actually meet. Just ask Dave

Interesting. Should look into that further. Because of how you phrased

As anybody who's heard some of the CDs in my collection can testify. I
may love Rush and Radiohead, but most of my collection is pretty gone to
one degree or another. You might be amused by a mixed CD I put together
from my collection called Japanese Tolerance Gauge, which starts with
Aikawa Nanase ("Cosmic Love," one of the few chart hits at the time I
liked; fuckin' "Dango San Kyodai," on the other hand...) goes through
indie-pop, garage rock, hardcore, experimental and finally, noise. The
gimmick is that, when you finally shut off the CD player determines your
Tolerance level. All without anime music or Shonen Knife.

compare a Miyazaki movie to a Johnny Quest cartoon? Miyazaki can remake
something as boring as the hot-dog eating contest and I will watch it.

hmmm, I think there is one, I am not sure now since I can't find it
anymore, (I might confused it w/ other magazine's freebies.) but I am
pretty sure there is also a drama CD.
> > trading card, plastic model (Gundam), and pencilboard,

oh I don't know, it is free, it comes in a big box, people who usually
don't buy the magazine would see it from outside the shrinkwrap easily
w/o reading the cover to see what is inside, you can't see the pencil
board from outside since you don't want it cover up the front page, and
you line the magazine facing outward you can't see it from the back,
either.
freebies doesn't matter to someone who buy the magazines regularly,
freebies are meant to entice people who aren't regular costumers, if
they don't even recognized what the freebies are in a casual glance at
the magazine rack, then it is not working.
> pencilboard, though, might, as pencilboards are starting to become

a pencilboard sells for $5 today? a model kit about $10? a model
freebie is definitely a more valuable item compare to pencilboard, at
least to Japanese as collectable. since most Japanese anime fans also
built models.

flipping through some of them...
sticker books (various stickers)
events books (summer, winter, convention, live concert, musical and play

guide books (various shows, gundam, noir, angelic Layer, sCRYed, kiddy

special memorial books (such as the cover of every single NT, or the
20th years anniversary Gundam seed complete, which is almost as thick as
a typical NT.)
calendar book, (you get one each year.)

You're right. That is a silly comparison. Still, if anyone *other* than
Miyazaki made it, it would stink.

get the English language VAs to do such a thing.

Not here. There are certainly model collectors, but I have my doubts that
they are the majority even among the hardcore fans. For starters, there may
be a higher proportion of girls and women here in the US into anime than in
Taiwan and, while some of them may build models, I'd say more of them are
fanartists and cosplayers.

Newtype USA has had some of those in the past.

Inside the magazine here.

In installments here as part of the monthy episode guide to what is being
shown in Japan. However, his month, there is an episode guide to Excel Saga
as part of the magazine.

Well, we are a bit deprived, then. Maybe if Newtype USA gets the same

To be honest, I haven't read the manga; I've only seen the OVA and movie.
FWIW, I buy manga for my daughter and she lends it back to me when she's
done. Somehow, Ah! My Goddess didn't make the cut for her. Instead, I'm

Heh, I'm only a part-time resident of Canada. My girlfriend lives in
Kitchener and I'm there every other weekend. My own house is in Michigan.
However, that would be cool and I think it would be worth arranging.
(Has brainstorm) I wonder if there would be room at say, Anime North, for a
panel on Internet anime fan forums? That might be interesting if we
presented the idea to the organizer for Anime North, who I've met. It would
also make the planning meetings "business trips". Hmm.

I liked it until the only time I got absolutely stinking drunk on it years

I don't think anybody has. Then again, I haven't spread it around that
much yet. Someone at my local anime club did ask to hear the last track
(3-minute excerpt of Merzbow's "Akasha Gulva") and he said he liked it.

first, I am talking about the readers in Japan, I did not mention
anywhere else, since we are talking NT Japan and USA here.
and second, I doubt it very much the American anime fans female
proportion will approach anywhere near Japan, or even Taiwan, for that
matter, which is around a split of 50-50, Western's is much more
weighted to the male size,
with that said, US does have a smaller anime models building population
by percentage, since there are not that many anime models available! it
is the theory of "if you give them a free model, they will build it."
thinking, how would you know unless you give them a chance? most shops
only stock those made in China pre-made toys which are terrible in
quality, if they can see the difference side by side, there will be an
opportunity.

you are missing the point, unlike in N. America, in Japan most of the
travel are done by train, instead of carry a big magazine like NT
around, and have to switch copies each month for new info, all you need
to do is carry this booklet with events info, time, direction and map,
train and bus route all in neat order, and is small enough to put in
your back pocket and you won't have to worry about getting a new one for
the duration of the summer/winter vacation, samething with new TV line
up, you only need it to act as a TV guide, instead of various NT copies
to clutter up the desk.

oh, I am not talking about episode guide here, I am talking about all
the previous NT articles, character design, background info, etc. all
compile into one booklet, which is what "NewType !00%" means.

I believe that Richard was surprised that you get one calendar book each
year with the original Newtype magazine. The Newtype USA magazine
doesn't offer a calendar of any type (calendar book, wall calendar, or
desk calendar) at all.
Exactly. Thank you, Rob!
Yes, a calender with all of the previous year's covers would be a cool
freebie.
I bet he wanted to though!!!!
Or maybe that was me.
Considering that you're infamous on raam for lusting after a cute android,
I'd say it was you. After all, you could close your eyes with Lime and ask
her to purr and meow and not know the difference!
As for the manga-ka, he drew Lime so you could look down her blouse and see
her cleavage, something I don't recall seeing in the anime, at least, not in

um, no, a year of NT does not mean 12 different covers, many titles
repeated, (.hack, Gundam Seed, Fullmetal, etc.) the NT bi-monthly
calendar has 6 pictures from 6 different titles. while not of the
covers, they are all by in-house artists and about the same quality as
the drawing within the articles. and they are not about the popular
shows of last year, but what they think will be popular the coming year.
(or what they want to hype, etc. for one thing, you almost never find
anything from Miyazaki/Animage on cover/calendar/poster, no matter how
popular they are.)
btw, something curious from yesterday.
animation news reported that animeondvd, quoting rightstuff, mentions an
imminent price increase of NT USA from $10 to $15,
then animeondvd withdrawed that article "by requested."
then the same article disappeared from animation news.
me think that someone from rightstuff accidently let slip an internal
memo to the public before they are ready. but it does seems there will
be a bump on sticker price in the future.
If the bump is going to be that damned big, they better look forward to an
ensuing pothole in sales.
It isn't quite that repetitious over here (and you should add Evangelion to
the list for NT USA covers).

Even better!

Ah, yes. Well, over here, the rivalry is different. We have Animerica, not
Animage, as the other major English-language anime monthly, so it's Viz's
titles that I would suspect would be unlikely to show up on the cover here.
> btw, something curious from yesterday.
Oh?

8-o
That's an interesting item. What's up, printing costs in US$ up since it
has collapsed relative to the CDN$? It shouldn't be advertising
revenues--ad rates quadrupled in the first year. That's why very few
independent retailers still advertise in NT USA.
> then animeondvd withdrawed that article "by requested."
Even more interesting.
> then the same article disappeared from animation news.
The last time I saw something disappear like this from the web, it was

nerve.

Maybe I'm biased by my immediate environment, but the anime fans I see most
often are my daughter and her otaku friends (mostly female) and the people I
see at conventions (about as many girls and women as boys and men). Also,
girls and women are the group driving the growth in sales of manga in the
US, not boys and men. Now, the old-line fans may be mostly male, but I see
parity between the sexes in the younger fans here. I will take your word
that it is the same on the other side of the Pacific.

While there are lots of places to get anime and manga in Ann Arbor, the
largest town close to where I live, there really is only one place to get
models--Wizzywig.

That's a thought. Maybe someone at Newtype USA read your post and wondered
how much more it would cost for a model to be included with an issue. ^_^

Incidental version therapy. I can imagine that you'd never want to deal
with it again.
FWIW, I had to work to like the taste of beer. It took me an entire winter
of parties--one beer the first party, two at the next, etc.--to get me to
enjoy it. Before then, I was a mixed drink and wine person, but it was a
lot easier to find beer at a party than anything sweet, so I adapted.

Oh. Sorry. Won't do that again.
FWIW, Dave did reveal his hometown, but in retrospect it was in a code so
that the people familiar with the area would understand, but others
wouldn't.

Damn. That's a high concentration of raam regulars in one town. As far as

That's not good for her--it shows she was not particularly healthy, as Four
is in the direction of disintegration for One--but a very good insight,
nonetheless.
> at the start of the anime, but I

Really! Actually, that might work. There is a concept called integration
that is part of the applied part of the Enneagram. It involves displaying
traits from other types in a specific order. The integration type for One
is Seven (did Ami show greater assertiveness and appreciation of her
environment from season to season?). The next type in the sequence is Five,
which is the integration type for Seven.

list of anime characters to go with it...yet.

You're welcome. If you're not very familiar with it, the art started out
a bit rough looking, and then settled into the style you're familiar with.
But it's still not that bad, and the writing is still great.

I have poured a bit of it down my throat since, when people have bought one
for me and I had no way to graciously decline. Then again, they probably
saw the look on my face when I had to deal with the taste.

When you stop to think about it, alcohol in general is an acquired taste,
isn't it? I also put myself off rye whisky the exact same way, so I quit
getting that drunk, period. That, plus I concluded I really don't like
getting that out of it, period. To this day, my drug of choice is coffee.

Well, there's a pretty devout group of anime fans here, period. One of
them has organized a package trip to Anime North for several years now,
which includes hiring a bus w/ a video system. I've taken it twice (when
I've had the money). And several Ottawans usually take away prizes in
contests here, most notably for fan fiction and anime music videos.

I just love the idea of a roomful of people who largely get fed by
mainstream sources like eMpTyV getting snatched away to another world far,
far removed from the shit that they're told to think is cool--whether they
like it or not. All the while, looking like deer in headlights. And then
having their brains short-circuit when they find out that it's actually
the Beatles.

Which is why Yamazaki Maso of Masonna chose it. Since he makes a lot of
noise, he doesn't listen to very much of it himself. He prefers
psychedelic rock, has a psych side band called Christine 23 Onna, and even
works at a psych record and clothing store in Osaka called Freak Scene.
I'd like to drop by the shop and hear C23O's music sometime.

Not yet, but I have seen the first two, so I'd give it a chance. I should

Definitely yes. She was one of the first to find (and lose) a
boyfriend, near the end of the original season - that moved her to
appreciation of her environment, which moved her to greater
assertiveness in Sailor Moon R. By Sailor Moon S, she was sufficiently
self-assured (after a crisis of self-doubt) that she was willing and
able to flirt with her best friend's boyfriend. That went away quickly,
though (which is probably good), and she settled into the Five
personality by the end of S/start of SuperS.

Actually the original price was going to be about $12.00, they dropped
it, probably due to a higher number of subscriptions than they
anticipated.
