Or, "I Am (not) Impressed".

Watched this last night courtesy of a fansub.

Opening sequence: a difficult, dangerous, and likely very expensive
operation to recover Shinji and Unit 01 from an orbiting crucifix that
turns into an Angel and gets destroyed post haste.

Interior of some kind of military base that is not NERV HQ: Everyone hates
Shinji. Nobody will tell him (or the audience) why they hate him. Or
what's going on. Oh, and here's a cute little collar that will blow off
Shinji's head if he ever tries to pilot an EVA ever again. Because they --
whichever "they" this is, another bit of information that nobody is
telling either Shinji or the audience -- don't need him. They just need
Shinji's EVA, Unit 01.

And then they -- whichever unexplained "they" this is -- launch their kit-
bashed superdimensional fortress. No, really. Ask Google about "Wunder".

It goes downhill from there.

The EVA cash cow is still being squeezed dry by Anno and company, it
would seem. Gainax should be better than this: past glories such as
Honneamise, Gunbuster, the original Evangelion, and FLCL showed what
they were once capable of before these endless EVA retreads.

Buy some of the older shows that don't have whiney hapless protagonists.
If enough people do that, it will show there's a market for shows with
reasonably-well-adjusted lead characters...

It's been so long since part 2 came out, I had forgotten pretty much
everything that happened in the previous two. But I'm usually confused
when watching EVA anyways, so it didn't matter much.

Yeah, that was annoying. Honestly, I don't know why Shinji gets so much
flak when all the other characters are equally detestable. I know some
people were outraged when in the previous Evangelion series everyone
died... I just kind of shrugged when it happened.

The whole thing was so silly that I thought this was going to be a
hallucination caused by Kaoru or something.

I've never detested Shinji. Such loathing would require more effort than
I'm willing to expend.

As a matter of fact, I was rather surprised and a bit glad when Shinji
chose to abandon Mistao's crew in this most recent take. Not that having a
spine lasted for long since the next major plot point is a rehash of the
first episode. Cue the mope that fills up the second act.

I admit that I like Mari. She's a misfit within a world of misfits and she
manages to get by despite that. Admittedly, she hasn't had much screen
time so the production crew hasn't had the opportunity to ruin her, too.

I still haven't ruled out hallucination. I'm holding out for a twist where
"Angelic Days" is reality and this whole Instrumentality thing is the
delusion. Like "Dual" without the alternate reality. Wouldn't *that* piss
off the fanboys? :)
