Review - Dangaioh

Back to the really old stuff and this is a title that was a real giggle
when first I saw it.
Three girls and one boy meet. They all have two things in common; first,
they have lost their memories of all but their own names. Second, they
appear to have psychic powers that, eventually, they use to run one of
those combining mecha that have been so popular in anime over the last few
decades. They spend the majority of the series either recovering their
memories or fighting off the enemy who has taken exception to the fact
that the mecha in question, not to mention their pilots, was supposed to
be theirs! Said enemy turns out to be a group of intergalactic pirates
bent on total domination. It doesn't help the Dangaoih team's cause that
one of the pilots is related to said pirates.
I first saw this in the mid 1990s when Manga Video released an edited dub
of it (Dangaioh Hyper Combat Unit, Manga Video MANV 1034, 1994). They did,
however, leave in the cheesy opening music (Cross Fight Dangaioh) which,
years later when I came across it again, sounded cheesier than ever!
Although the folk behind it are credited as Artmic and AIC, don't expect
another Bubblegum Crisis as the art is totally different (as were the
artists behind it). Actually, the art isn't that bad, though it has a few
bits that didn't seem quite right. The main thrust of the story is,
however, one of inexperience dealing with total adversity, a group of four
kids, albeit with powers, backed up by a flawed genius (the guy who
developed Dangaioh and who was responsible for erasing the pilot's
memories ends up shooting himself in the foot, metaphorically speaking,
with his intended customers and ends up having to play a reluctant hero as
said kids remember themselves).
It doesn't last long, however. The story last for three episodes then
comes to an abrupt halt. I've been informed that a TV series was made to
come after these OAVs but that it wasn't much. I couldn't comment since I
haven't seen it, but Dangaioh wasn't the only abrupt end I saw in those
days. If you don't like stories that get cut off in the middle, then avoid
this one. I must also admit that some of the subplots are as cheesy as the
theme tune, and the mecha isn't the best I've ever seen though it is
certainly not the worst! A giggle? Yes, it still has enough cheese to make
me cringe and chortle having not watched it for so long.

I watched this one when it was put out (Sub) by US Renditions (Trish
Ledoux and Toshi Yoshida worked on it I recall). It was 3 volumes and
it is legendary for one reason: Sidekick Wave.
You older posters may remember that flub. It's been many years since I
watched it, but that still sticks out in my mind (well, that and Trish
doing dub voices (like for Princess Kahm in Outlanders....brrr.))

That was the way I remembered it. It did have something of a promise,
though, because I was somewhat expecting more to the story than what
ended up happening. The biggest disappointment was learning that the
series only went so far and never got around to a reasonable climax and
resolution. I really did want to see how the various protagonists would
come through, after all...

For the younger viewers out there who might not recall or get the
unintended joke, that should have been "Psychic Wave", one of the
earliest examples of an unfortunate translation error. *Not* what Robin
does when he wants to get Batmans attention [1].

Jonathan Clements "Schoolgirl Milky Crisis [2]" contains a number of
descriptions of how this sort of - ahem - quality voice acting tends to
happen. ^_^
[1] The *current* Robin, I understand, gets Batmans attention by being
a bit of a jerk. Mind you, I also understand that the current Batman is
not the Batman I grew up with, but is also a bit of a Dick...
[2] A title that ensures you will never, ever be able to read this book
on the train.

This was the first anime that I watched after learning what an anime is,
and it was subbed.
Before that, it was Japanese cartoons that were broadcasted on TV, dubbed
to Spanish.

Don't forget the scene where one of the baddies gouges out his own eyeball
and crushes it, pretty much just to show how much of a badass he is.

Yeah, I had vol. 1 of the US Renditions version. Cost me $35 for a 40
minute tape... "Sidekick Wave" brings back memories.
Actually bought it on the tails of just having watched Gunbuster, which I
thought was amazing (and still do) and was somehow under the impression that
they were by the same studio. Entertainingly cheesy, but man, this was no
Gunbuster...

Dangaioh, on its original US Renditions tapes, was the hardest title for
me to collect. Only within the past couple of years (at least) did I
finally manage to buy and watch the 3rd tape, and it was _the_ tape I
waited for.
The reason to watch Dangaioh, if not for the story or anything, is Mia
Alice. Oh yes.

It was the growing pains of a new industry. It took USR and Trish till
the third episode of Gunbuster to decide that they had to use the term
"Big Sister" instead of just the characters name. The fact the
"improved" subtitles on the DVD revert back is just sad...

Oh yes, I remember that (I still have the USR VHS tapes of Gunbuster
vol. 2 and 3; vol. 1 is the Manga version). Still watch it every so
often (Buster Shield! ^_^).
