So, despite Azumanga Daioh having had its day several years ago, Yen
Press (Yeah, I had to look them up, too), has decided to reprint the
Azumanga Daioh manga again. This is also despite ADV having already
released an omnibus edition of the series.

Since ADV decided to sell the license to the US rights for Azumanga
Daioh, they must think that the market is tapped out for the series.
Since Yen Press decided to purchase the license, they must think that
money can still be had from the series. What are your thoughts?

And to bring this back to anime (since technically, the manga aspect
of the series should've been on the manga board which I wasn't sure
still existed until about 5 minutes ago when I decided to take a
look), if Azumanga Daioh can make money with a second licensor, this
just gives more weight to the idea that anime that are no longer
available in the US should be be brought back, whether via relicensing
or by purchasing the license from the remnants of collapsed companies.

As for my thoughts on the rerelease of Azumanga Daioh, I really can't
say how many they can really sell. People who were interested in the
series either bought the original printing of the series as four books
or the collected edition. It's only been a few years so the volumes
people own should still be in relatively good condition. Even though
the series is being retranslated and probably won't have the small
errors that crept up in the ADV release of the manga, I'm not sure if
that would be enough of a draw for people who already have the ADV
printing. And if a person hasn't been interested in the series
before, I don't think that Yen Press has done anything to draw in new
readers of the series. Perhaps if Yen Press was able to use the new
art that Kiyohiko Azuma made, redoing many of the old strips, then
Azumanga Daioh fans would purchase the new printing of the series.

There is one thing that will likely make the Yen Press edition sell even to
those who bought the ADV version: A new translation which is apparently
more faithful than the original. This version also includes the original
colour pages. I'm down with both of those. I held out on buying the ADV
version, and I guess it was for a good reason.

To be honest, I will probably re-buy it precisely BECAUSE it's being
re-translated. Seeing some of the translation errors (yes I did
read untranslated ones before I read the ADV volumes) were extremely
off-putting.

I know they were often done deliberately, in an attempt to make it
easier to read for people who aren't as well-acquainted with Japanese
idioms and such (such was the logic of using "Ranma-honey" instead of
Ranma-chan with Ukyo. Brrrr.), but there were better ways of doing this
(Carl Gustav Horn did a great job of doing that in Excel Saga)

So yeah, even though I have the ADV versions I will likely be buying
the Yen Press version because of that.

I would think Yen Press will run it with the magazine they produce at some
point. It fills out a general sweep of the market with products that apeal
to quite a few types of people.

I hope they do that, so I can see if the translation really
is better than ADVs. I want to buy the new one but 24.99
is a little steep at this point and time, and I'd hate
to get burnt again on this.

I will pull them out this afternoon after work and spot check a for the
sections that match up with the ADV individuals I have from years ago and
post what I find. FYI, some of the Borders stores in North Texas still have
some old ADV stuff side by side with the new Yen+ stuff so it might be a
good way for you to see the differences first hand if you live near a
Borders.

I read recently that the mangaka for Azumanga Daioh has spent some time
redrawing large parts of the original artwork for a 10th Anniversary
republication (one reason Yotsuba! went on hiatus). Is it possible that
the Yen Press rerelease will use this newer version?

http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2009/06/16/azumanga-daioh-now-azumanga/

It seems the new version looks a lot more like the modern Yotsubato!
artstyle, with simpler eyes and hair, more minimalist. Some texts have
also changed and there are also changes in some side-characters such as
the student who has their bike stolen by Yukari-sensei is now a girl.

No, I just put the ADV volume 1 release from August 2003 next to the same
sections from the new Yen Plus edition with a date of December 2009. The
artwork is exactly the same in each verison.

I used one of the Borders Coupons for my copy. It set me back $17.49. Yen
did re-translate it. They must have used better source material. The art
is noticeably sharper. The art uses more of the page area. The ADV version
has larger borders than the Yen version. Over all I am very happy with the
purchase. Keep an eye out as Borders runs 40% off coupons every 6 to 12
weeks. Also get on the mailing list for local comic shops. Our local store
had a 50% off sale today. I was able to get some of the Code Gleass manga
for half today only just because I was on his list.

Ah, thank you. I used to have a Borders/WaldenBooks near me,
at the old Columbus City Center. They were one of the last stores to
pull out when CCC shut down (now being torn down to make sort of
a mini-me version of Central Park in the short run; the way the town
is being run anymore they ought to just make it a cow pasture).

That is disappointing. Looks like I won't be picking up the new
volume.
(I actually surprised myself when I wrote that it was disappointing,
since I don't really like the new art, which is why I never got into
Yotsuba! I just don't like the simpler, minimalist character
designs. However, since I already own the ADV books, there really
isn't any reason for me to buy the Yen Press rerelease unless the new
edition is very different from the old one).

Remember to get a Borders Reward card when you go in. They are free and if
you give them a good email address they will send coupons directly to you.
This weeks coupons are 50%, but only to limited items. Manga is not one of
the items today. There should be a new coupon out in a few days for next
week.

To be fair, Yen Press managed to pick up the license for Yotsuba--
which is technically, the artistic successor of Azumanga Daioh for
Kiyohiko Azuma--after ADV abandoned publication sometime around the
fifth volume or so. For all intents and purposes, I think this is
great marketing move. Yen Press also has the license for the English
translations of the Haruhi Suzimiya books, manga and novels.

And, oddly enough, also the artistic precursor, because of AzuDai Renewal
:-)

I'm betting Osaka won't be saying "Fuhgeddabout it." I liked someone
finally treating Osaka (the region) like New York instead of somewhere
in the South (I know, I know, they shall rise again...) when they
translate.
