The giant mecha, the ridiculously giant mecha, the ludicrously
gigantic mecha, the messing with genetics, the space invaders with an
apparent connection to humanity . . . am I the only one seeing at
least a partial homage to Macross in Gurren Lagaann?

That's not the only one; I thought the way that when they're in battle,
the Third Bridge always gets destroyed, but re-appears in time to get
blasted in the next battle, was a tip of the hat to Space Battleship
Yamato. So they're having lots of fun with this show.

Not that I'm disagreeing with you, by the way.

On Tue, 07 Oct 2008, Antonio E. Gonzalez <AntE...@aol.com> observed
and inquired for corroboration:

It's Gainax. They're constitutionally incapable of entirely avoiding
homages in their products. Except maybe "Wings of Honneamise" -- I
think that was entirely its own animal.

But "Macross" never went past Ridiculously (capital ship) Scaled
Mecha. For said Ludicrously Gigantic (planetary) Scale, you have to
look at "Gunbuster 2" and... um... has anybody *other* than Gainax had
the chutzpah to do Ludicrous Scale Mecha? Non-transforming ships,
sometimes, yes.

There's gotta be a convention panel topic, somewhere in the noösphere,
comparing Doc Smith and Gainax levels of engineering one-upmanship.
