My wife's sister died recently and she's feeling blue.
Watching "Dragon Half" cheers her up.
I like "Assemble Insert" as well, but those two are the only such anime
I own.

Can anyone suggest titles that are
funny/amusing/uplifting
accessible to nonotaku
ideally, completely contained on one disk.

Thanks,
Mike

That's a hard one, for me anyway (there are others here who will consider it
easy).

Some meeting the one disk, but not necessarily comedy or accessible
stipulation:

Roujin Z (movie, accessible in my view, mildly comic in spots)

Urusei Yatsure: Beautiful Dreamer (comic, but a major head trip that might
confuse her - it does me after several viewings)

Ah! My Goddess! The Movie (romantic, some comedy)

Animation Runner Kuromi (might not be accessible since the workplace
depicted is an anime studio - but the characters reflect more than a few
offices and places I've worked in, so I see it as having a lot of universal
aspects)

Some that might fit the bill -

All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku-Nuku: The OAV, 6 episodes on one disk.
Do not confuse with APCCG Nuku-Nuku TV series or APCCG Nuku-Nuku Dash
(especially that - it might bring a certain person I miss but some don't
back from the dead <g>).

Midori Days, Handheld collection - 3 disks, one case, was inexpensive when I
got it. Relationship comedy.

One of the Love Hina Movies - Love Hina Again or Love Hina Spring Movie in
particular, maybe Love Hina Christmas Movie. Available individually or as a
boxed set.

Some remote possibilities:

If I See You In My Dreams - slice of life comedy, comes in a set with OAV
disk and TV version disk. I thought the OAV was better, animation wise and
ending wise. It's also shorter than the TV version.

Tattoon Master - 1 hour long, 2 episode comedy.

Ouran isn't that short (full 26-ep series) and does somewhat pander to
otaku (the different male stereotypes in the Club), so I don't think I'd
recommend that.

Mike: Sounds like you're looking for OVAs, which, as I'm sure you're well
aware, there aren't many being made nowadays, so, more classics. Looking
through my own collection (and trying to keep the female-flesh fan service
to a minimum):

All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku (original OVAs; it would help if
she likes cats)
Elf Princess Rane
FLCL (weird, but funny, and touching at times)
Golden Boy (if she *can* tolerate aforementioned fan service)
Ruin Explorers

Hope this helps.

Watson.

If you can handle 13 episodes (and some smart writing along with
the slapstick/satire), then Abenobashi Magical Shopping Arcade.

If you can handle 26 episodes, Excel Saga; not many shows have the
protagonist killed five times just in the first episode!

- Azumanga Daioh
- Ramen Fighter Miki
- Slayers (particularly the first season and the "Perfect" movie)

I'd also recommend "Doujin Work" and "Lucky Star", but perhaps those two
aren't that accessible to non-otaku.

Uplifting, but less comedy-driven:

- most Ghibli movies (particularly "Kiki's Delivery Service", "Spirited
Away", "Porco Rosso", "My Neighbor Totoro", "Whisper of the Heart")
- Aria
- Yawara!

In the 90's, Dragon Half was always mentioned in the same sentence with
the "Shinesman" dub....NOT the sub version, although you might want to
leave subs on for maximum impact.
(And with "Elf Princess Rane" rounding out the triptych, although not
sure whether that one still plays like it used to.)

For those incomplete, any volume of Azumanga Daioh can be played free of
story, but if you're asking about self-contained OVA, that's the 90's
holy trinity.

A classic series, but I thought it was too long, it starts to get
repetitive.

Doujin Work is probably the funniest anime I've seen in a long time, for
the first half of the series every single scene had me LOLing and even
though the addition of more characters caused it to lose focus a little it
stayed funny to the end. The way the gothish artist Tsuyuri sets up the
avaricious but innocent Najimi for embarrassment at every opportunity was
hysterical, and the pathos of the older office worker Kaneru for whom being
an amateur artist is the only escape from a life of 9-5 tedium was nicely
handled too, she reminded me of the desperate housewife Roberta in
"Desperately Seeking Susan".

The end song sung by Mai Mizubashi (who also did the theme song for
Kamisama Kazoku) is very uplifting, she has a wonderfully cheerful voice.

Hmm... that one might be interesting for me, too. However, Right Stuf
seems to have two different(?) versions:

- Collector's Series Box Set (Central Park Media, 300 min)
- Complete Collection (ADV, 325 min)

Does anyone know what the actual differences between those two are (i.e.
which one I should get)?

I don't know the difference. Probably an extra or so. I looked at mine,
it's the CPM version. I think it was on special from Right Stuf when I got
it.

How about "Macross Dynamite 7" (「マクロスダイナマイト7」) [1]? An
OVA with a lot of uplifting music, it spans only four episodes, and
seems accessible to non-_otaku._

The story is about a guitarist, Basara Nekki, journeying around the
galaxy away from his band, who arrives on a planet named "Zola," where
a species of humanoid marsupials called the "Zolan" live. There,
galactic space whale poachers and the Zola Patrol are fighting each
other as the Great Galactic White Whale leads the pack of space whales
near Zola. Basara is injured after trying to stop fighting between
the Zola Patrol and the poachers, and is rescued by a young Zolan girl
named "Elma Hollie." Her father, a man named "Graham," lost his arm
and his wife in an encounter with the Great Galactic White Whale, and
has sworn revenge.

While both the space poachers and the Zola Patrol are convinced that
communication with the space whales is impossible, Basara is convinced
that his guitar music excites the Great Galactic White Whale, and that
that whale is actually not hostile.

Although it's not a comedy, it's definitely not a tragedy, either, and
parts of it are funny. The series used to cheer me up a lot,
especially the music within.

Amazingly no one has mentioned these yet ...

- Tokyo Godfathers
it is a movie with serious theme; overall is a feel good movie.

- Fruits Basket
It's a series of 26 epidoes on 4 disks (on Netflix at least).
Overall, it is amusing and light hearted. I don't remember
which one disk would be appropriate; perhaps try first two
discs, episodes 1-12 (?).

On the first episode, we learn that Tohru's mother recently passed away,
though she keeps optimistic, it is not known for us what effect may cause
on the OP's sister in law when she watches this.

Again, thanks to everyone for all the suggestions.
I enjoyed Fruits Basket, but I don't think it would serve to lift my
wife's spirits.

Oh yes; thanks for the reminder.

OP also confirmed elsewhere that Fruits Basket won't be good enough
for the purpose.

Agreed! In fact, EPR was the first thing to pop into my mind...

Space Pirate Mito. Tenamoyna Voyagers. Any of the Slayers movies or
OVAs.

If it were Opposite Day, I'd suggest Elfen Lied!^_^

Good catch!
