Anyamal Tantei Kiraminzoo Through 7

I'm only following a handful of new anime series this season, along with a few
other series from previous seasons, so my viewing schedule is pretty light this
Fall. Never-the-less I'm enjoying what I am watching, particularly since all of
the series are quirky in one way or another. And one of the most quirky of all
the new series that I am following is one that is getting little or no attention
from most anime bloggers, ļæ½Anyamal Tantei Kiruminzooļæ½.

This series is structured like a magic girl anime, but it isn't really. If I
wanted to split hairs I'll call it a ļæ½pseudo-science girlļæ½ series, sort of like
ļæ½Denou Coilļæ½, but with the driving psuedo-science being nano-biology rather than
computer science. Like Dennou Coil it's set in a near future world in which the
kids have various futuristic toys, such as flying skate boards, but the
futuristic aspect isn't emphasized.

This is also a fairly sexy series, although not overtly. The grownup women in
it, and there are plenty of them, are all hot, and the girls are cute, but not
overtly loli. And there are plenty of bishii guys in it too. But the fanservice
is subtle and likely aimed at more observant adults viewers than at the primary
audience of kids.

But the key aspects for me are that there are lots of characters who are
developing in the series, along with a multilayered plot that is so far avoiding
simple-minded good-versus-bad conflicts. In this sense the series is also
reminding me of ļæ½Saint Octoberļæ½.

The series also has bright and chipper music to go along with the bright and
chipper animation. The voice acting is sharp and snappy, and the voice actors
are bringing a lot of detail to their characters. There are also some
traditional stage-comic style jokes that are being used, such as in episode 7
with the ļæ½inappropriateļæ½ names for the two police detectives.

All-in-all, I'm enjoying Anyamal Tantei Kiraminzoo a lot and I am giving it a B+
through the first 7 episodes. I'd love to hear Galen's thoughts on this series,
because it seems to me to be the sort of series that he would like. And for the
rest of you, if you are looking for something that looks like mahou shoujo, but
isn't quite, you may well want to try this series out. However, with the overall
apparent lack of popularity of the series, you may well have difficulty finding
English subs if you need them.

I'm certainly won't give it attention, the first episode was enough for me.
There was absolutely no quirkiness whatsoever in the first episode and a
show like this needs that imho. And since I do have quite a big amount of
anime I watch I decided to drop this one.

I'm also following this series. It looks like a children show, in fact,
it is mainly a children's show, but it has a quirky sense of humor and
the characters are mostly adorable, especially in their Kirumin form. I
like how they use mostly very bright colors for the characters without
gradual shading. In this sense, the visual aspect reminds me of old cel
animation from the nineties in shows like card captor sakura.
Too bad most anime bloggers ignore this series. I think it's more
enjoyable than other recent shows which are aimed at fans.

Looks pretty cute from the stream I found on-line. I did find one
fansub of it. Nugumin just started recently, releasing the 1st ep.
Oct.30 and the 2nd Nov.2. It's on nyatorrents and via direct d/l.

Not sure if I have time to add another series, though. I started
watching Shugo Chara again and have some catching up to do. While it
may be typical Clamp style maho-shoujo, it really is quite well done.
About the closest thing to Card Captor Sakura, quality wise, that I've
seen in a while.

You mentioned St October, and that's being subbed at a "relaxed" pace
<g>. 4 ep. this year, but they're up to no.12. I'm still following
it, but it's tough going knowing that it may be years until they
finish the 26 ep. at this pace >_<.

That's too bad about Saint October - it takes a turn for the Very Strange
in a very good way during the second half. It is definitely a sleeper.

Speaking of the character designs - the animators obviously enjoy making the
girls quite attractive - have you seen Riko in the beginning of episode 7 when
she has her hair loose? She's a real heart-stopper there.

And I do love the little subtle details - like in the episode where the tomcat
is chasing Riko, but when she finally turns fully into a cat he leaves her
alone, much to Riko's confusion. When Riko brings this up to her mom her mother
laughs and tells her that it is because she isn't an "adult" yet. I've never
seen that brought up in an anime in the past.

There's a couple of anime episodes which explore what happens when a
girl gets her first period; it's usually treated with some delicacy or
matter-of-factness by all concerned. One of the early episodes of
Mizuiro Jidai has this happen to the main female character (occasioning
the red beans and rice celebratory meal) and it also occurs in an
episode of Tenshi no Shippo Chuu! to one of the younger animal-spirit
angels.

She was cute, especially in her cat form scratching Rimu's favorite
book. But I'm more focusing on Nagisa Onee-chan. She has two big
advantages over her younger siblings. Maybe she's a contender for Dave
Watson's being upfront gallery? <g>

Yeah, the chara designs are cute almost to the point of disgusting, but
thankfully Koge-Donbo's work is helping me develop some immunity (my
favourite quote about her, and I paraphrase: "She could draw the site of a
mass slaughter, and people would still go, 'Aww, that's so adorable.'").
As for Nagisa, yeah, she's upfront compared to the rest of the female cast,
but, unless they give her a jiggle, she still says "look at me" to me
instead of "look at those." Given what everyone's been saying about the
show in general, maybe I should check out an ep.

I'm not certain that Nagisa is ready yet for BU, but I certainly would like to
see a beach or onsen episode in order to find out... <g>

On the other hand, Kanon's mom would fit into BU quite well - and we definitely
need to see her in a beach or onsen episode!

Looks like Maaka Karin's siblings. And the school uniforms kinda remind me
of the Aria Company's outfits (I think it's mostly the hat, and the colors).
