Look for the big signs that say: "Animania."
Affiliation:
Animania is a registered student organization at the University of Michigan.
Organization History:
Animania owes it's life to the likes of Tim Eldred, Pres Nevins, Dave Laing, and others too numerous to count. Animania has never charges dues or admission fees, and never will. Its stated purpose is to "turn on" the largest possible audience to the Wonder That Is Anime. Though Animania does have a form of administrative "structure" (or "inner circle"), Animania prides itself of being free of the beauracratic nonsense other clubs can be plagued with. Animania is a functional anarchy.

Type of organization (local, regional, national, international)
National. Foreign fans can become members since the focus is on Europe and (most of) the publications will be in English. The fanclub will also try to get Dutch fans in touch with foreign fans but the main purpose is to expand anime fandom in the Netherlands.
Membership requirements (dues, etc)
None. This will change to the subscription rate of the fanzine as soon as we can offer subscriptions.
Number of members: 10. Only Dutch members at the moment.
Publications and newsletter info:
The first priority of the fanclub is publishing a fanzine called "Otaku". The first issue of this fanzine will be published before the end of June. Its main purpose is to inform European fans (not limited to Dutch fans or members of Anime NL) about anime and manga. This includes reviews about anime, manga, magazines and fanzines.
Each issue will also focus on a particular manga/anime artist. The first issue will focus on Katsuhiro Otomo, the second issue on Masamune Shirow.
The format of the fanzine will be B&W, A5 (halfsized A4). All text will be in the English language. Otaku will appear at least once every two months (but if possible it will appear monthly).
Fans are encouraged to contribute reviews, articles, dojinshi, manga or artwork. Regular contributors will get free copies of the fanzine. This offer is not limited to Dutch fans. In fact, we already have two foreign contributors.
Other fanclubs interested in getting copies of Otaku can send copies of their fanzine. Fanzines received will probably be reviewed in an issue of Otaku.
Fanclubs which are organizing events that might attract fans from other countries (such as anime conventions) can advertise these events for free in Otaku. Contact me at the address above for more details.
Organization tape Library or tape trading:
One of the main problems for European fans is the different video standard, PAL instead of NTSC (which is used in both the US and Japan). At the moment we are testing an NTSC to PAL conversion setup.
For more details I refer to our fanzine and "Projects" below.
Projects: (Subtitling, translating, etc)
Since none of our members can speak Japanese (though some of us are learning) we don't offer a translation service. We will offer scripts and synopses that we can get our hands on though, either on disk or in a printed version. This is a non-profit service and permission will be asked from the writers of the scripts and synopses.
Also, since a lot of anime fans have no access to the Usenet/Internet we will offer electronic resources to members of Anime NL. This includes FAQs, Shopping Guides, GIF pictures, r.a.a. and r.a.m. digests and other anime/manga related stuff from the Usenet. As with the scripts, this is a non-profit service.
Subtitling is not an option at this moment since we don't have the equipment to offer this service. However this will probably change during the course of this year. If we can get permission from the writers of the scripts we might translate the English scripts to Dutch and create anime with Dutch subtitles because even in multi-linguistic Holland there are still people who don't speak any English.
Meeting times/admission/etc: Monthly gatherings to watch anime.
Affiliation:
Anime Europe of course! This is a *very* recent idea from some of the fans on IRC (an Internet chat channel). The plan is to have all European fanclubs join this organization in order to exchange information, fanzines and tapes. All fanclubs interested in Anime Europe can contact me at the address above.
There are already interested fans from Norway, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands but we want more!
Organization History:
During Hillcon II, the 17th Benelux science fiction convention (Nov. 1991), Nico Veenkamp put Akira in the video programme. This movie had quite an impact on the audience. It made me a fan in a matter of minutes.
During the course of 1992 Nico started a fanclub called "Japanimation Fanclub Holland". Nico Veenkamp also published a fanzine called "Fan!Scene", which focused on science fiction, fantasy and anime.
During that year Nico convinced the team for Hillcon III (they forced me into the committee for that convention) that an anime night would be a very good idea for Hillcon III. Surprisingly, the team agreed and we had the first Dutch anime night, which ran from 18:00 to 07:00.
However, because Nico was rather busy with other things, the fanclub suffered from neglectance so he asked me and some other local fans to take over the fanclub. Since Nico still plans to publish more issues of "Fan!Scene" we decided to start another fanzine that would be limited to anime and manga. Liking the fact that the term otaku is like a two-edged sword we decided to make it the name of our fanzine. Also, since insiders prefer the term anime over japanimation we changed the name of the fanclub to
Anime NL.
Right now we are almost finished with the first issue of Otaku. As soon as Otaku is running steadily we will be implementing more of our plans and we hope that we will organize fandom in the Netherlands.

Affiliation: Inter Asian Council (JHU)
Organization History:
The anime showings first started with Sue Shambaugh and her husband. They showed stuff at their homes at around 1986-1987. This prompted a group of Japanese students and their friends to start Nippon Students Association. This group showed anime a whole lot along with other movies. The group, however, did not do much else. A group of malcontent Japanese students and their freinds formed JSI (for one thing, they thought that the showings of Akira, Monster City, and Sukeban Deka hurt the Japanese image).
JSI was a sort of SAC mistake that slipped by until it was too late. When SAC realized that it had 2 Japanese groups, it forced them to join together. The animosity between the otakus and the rest of the group was so great that the ex-NSA members still showed anime for the group (as any anime addict will), but stayed away from group politics. (JSI started and absorbed NSA in 1990) When I came in (at 1990) I agreed to help put together shows (partly to sooth my guilt over stealing the awesome looking poster
s). I wasn't really needed for that school year, but I did help in a subbing project (mostly watched). The next year the person elected by the JSI general election to be coordinator of anime failed to do anything but move the collection to his apartment. Pissed that I had waited all summer to see anime again and nothing was going on, I came in and started showing stuff on my own. Because the president of JSI and some of the other officers were my freinds, I succesfully made a coup for the position of anime
coordinator. Later that year, Bernard (feeling guilty over stealing my posters) asked if he could help out. I didn't really need his help then, but always asked him to put up some posters for me. Last year, the showings started getting more attention and so I needed more and more help. Bernard is a self made AV nut so he was very helpful. A group of fans also started doing crazy stuff like doing the wave in the theater and making newsletters to be handed out during the showings. They (also because they fe
lt guilty about stealing the posters -which had become such an epidemic that even the dean of academic affairs was doing it) asked if they could help. At this time, one of my lab partners from the previous semester who had hated anime before (but I told him to watch some of the collection from his brother who IS an anime fan, and told him to especially go watch Gundam when he mentioned that his brother collects that one the most), but was a rabid fan now (thanks to Gundam), started to ask just what JSI was
doing for it's fans, and came to the conclusion that it was doing nothing. He (Johnny Park -brother: Jim Park) wanted his own club and the group of fans who had been doing the newsletter agreed. Hence Johns Hopkin Animation Club. I will be sending a copy of this to Johnny so that he can respond to your query (as a rule, I don't like politics, and love anime, so have tried to keep a good relation with JHAC. Some in JHAC see me as the equivalent of Genom -Kinda' true because I did pull a lot of strings in
the SAC behind the scenes to get JHAC accepted, and when people show "power" (hardly, SAC is made up of good friends, so all I had to do was ask and they helped. Same for Comic Book club and Hopkins Science Fiction club) they elicit a little fear.
This is what some friends from JHAC told me. I don't know how Johnny feels about me, but I hope he won't take to nastiness in our future dealings. I am sending a copy of this questionaire to him so that he can tell you about his group himself).

continued to build up its members. We are looking forward to interacting with other S. Cal clubs and expanding our activities.

Local. Having been formed just last year (late 1991), the majority of our audience is understandibly Harvard students. We are growing, however, and have had a few people come to our showings who are not directly involved in the immediate Harvard community...
Membership requirements (dues, etc)
Membership is currently $5 for the school year ($4 for continuing members).
All money will eventually go back into the club, via costs of publicity (very important), or club tape purchases for future showings, or whatever... As a matter of current policy, all showings are both free and open to the public. However, members will be given preferencial seating if the size of the crowd necessitates such action. Members will also be given personal phone invitations/reminders a few days before each showing, assuming, of course, that the publicity coordinator is not too busy with acad
emics to take the time to do so... (grin)
Number of members:
Currently official members number only around a dozen, or maybe even as many as around 15, but as we have just started, we hope that our numbers will soon grow... The average number of people who show up to our showings, however, is usually as high as 20 or 25.
Publications and newsletter info: No publications and no newsletter currently.
Organization tape Library or tape trading: No lending library currently.
Projects: (Subtitling, translating, etc) No projects currently
Meeting times/admission/etc:
Current schedule is a pair of showings about every 2 to 4 weeks, on Friday

Whispers of Iscandar Newsletter- Features anime new releases, animation news, newspaper articles, club news, chapter/affiliate happenings, etc. Price: Free with Nova subscription. Plublishes with Nova and in-between them. A subscriber continues to receive Whispers until he/she has received both Novas.
Organization tape Library or tape trading:

Projects: (Subtitling, translating, etc)
On an individual basis our subscribers are involved in every aspect of promoting japanese animation, including translating, subtitling, working with various conventions, etc.
Meeting times/admission/etc:
EDC National has no public meetings. Meetings are held by local chapters & affiliate groups.
Affiliations: We are affiliated with all our chapters/affiliate groups, as they are affiliated with us- it is mutual exchange and fellowship.
Club History:
EDC started in late 1981 as a Star Blazers group. Was finally organized in 1982. Was one of only 3 major organizations in the country aimed at Japanese animation at the time. Organized in a paramilitary structure using ranks, chapters were named for military ships (ala Star Blazers - Space Cruiser XYZ, etc), very similar to the current Star Fleet fan club (X number of members = cruser, add 10 to upgrade to battleship, etc) Expanded in 1985 to include all forms of Japanese animation, and occassionally,
other forms of animation. Became bogged down over the years under its structure, and lightened up to an affiliation between groups, established or new. We love helping new groups get started. Individuals are also welcome to join the EDC, however, will mostly be kept in contact with other fans through the publications, if they can't be matched up with a chapter or affiliate local to them. Currently this structure still exists. The EDC Motto for operation is: Publish Nova, Make Friends, Help Fans Make Con
nections. These are our goals. A "membership" in the EDC basically consists of receiving the publications (which is why we call them "subscribers" instead of "members".) Of course, we encourage this!
The EDC is the second longest running organization in anime fandom history (2nd to the C/FO) as it has never stopped operating for any lengtrh of time (never closed down and was re-opened, etc. Recent rumors of the "death of EDC" were posted across various BBSes and this action was taken by someone on a personal vendetta against an EDC staffer. This decaltion was not made by anyone with any authority in the organization and should be ignored.
Currently, the EDC has enjoyed renewed activity, (interest comes in waves, like with most anime interests) will be affiliating with several new groups in the future and plans to publish a membership directory & other fun items.
We welcome all inquiries, subscrivers, and interested parties!

Organization tape Library or tape trading:
The IAC is the proud possesor of a tape library consisting of Licensed Anime donated by our sponsors. It includes tapes from U.S. Manga Corp, AnimEigo, US renditions, and Streamline Pictures. This library is freely accessible to any paid-up member if they leave a deposit. (Either half the amount of the replacement cost of the tape, or a licensed anime tape in good condition.)
The IAC does not engage in tape trading. The IAC does not deal with fan-subtitlers. This is not intended as a slight or a slam, we have nothing against the fan-subbers. We even contacted them when we were setting up the club, but it was decided to go the route of being a club that engaged in no matters of legal "gray areas". Considering our growth, and the things we do this seems to have paid off handsomely with several dozen tapes in the library. About half of them are out at any one time.
Projects: (Subtitling, translating, etc)
We promote anime.
We promote licensed anime.
We promote it in all our activities, and we come in contact with hundreds of
people each year.
We go in for all-day anime meetings (11 hours), Special Interest Groups
(SIG's) that put out their own fanzines, Libraries for members (now expanding into American and Japanese anime magazines), and running a large Anime Room at the InConJunction SF con here once a year on the July 4th weekend. (Yes. THAT weekend. Oh well, it's interesting work and we get lots of people anyway. InCon has been a July 4th event for over a decade and is not about to change.) So far we HAVE gotten lots of tapes from the sponsors for each new con.
Meeting times/admission/etc:
We meet on the third Sunday of every month.
We meet (and show anime) from Noon till 11:00 PM. (11 hours)
(minus about 45 minutes for the business meeting)
We offer munchies and soft drinks all day, and we order the ceremonial pizza around 6:00 PM.
Considering how far some people travel to get to the meeting, and peoples schedules, this works out well. An all day outing for some. For others it's a few hours fun before or after church or work or gaming...:)
We charge no admission, anyone can walk in and watch the shows (and we encourage this!). But do ask for donations of up to $3.00 dollars per meeting to cover rent and food. We've always scraped by.
Affiliation:
We are at present affiliated with the Circle of Janus SF club, and the SF convention InConJunction they sponsor. We work with licensed anime translators to promote anime, and our members have contacts with, (and sometimes membership in ) other clubs.
Organization History:
A club was formed by a few of us some years back....Indy Anime. It died shortly from the inept leadership of the president Jim Yancey (a person we've never seen at a meeting since...:)
Some months later we tried again, and Robert Earl Spencer was shanghai'd into the presidency of the Indiana Animation Club. For a while everything was great and we flourished. Then life caught up with Rob and did very bad things to his spare time. Not his fault, but the club faltered, then stopped.
After several months of no meetings, Chuck Stewart offered to take up the meetings again, and Rob said Ok. A constitution was drafted, organizational meetings held, policies decided, and meetings began again: elections were held at the first one, and a legal, Not-for-Profit organization was born from the ashes of the old IAC. (Ta-Da!) (Theme for Iczer-1 in BGM here...:)
That was a year and a half ago, and the elections held last July re-confirmed, unaminously, the policies of the club. This is what we are, and this is what we do.

Organization tape Library or tape trading:
We neither encourage or discourage tape trading due to the strict copyright and censorship laws in Singapore...that's our official line. We do not have a tape library for the above reasons.
Projects: (Subtitling, translating, etc)
Our major activities are screening, and having exhibitions. We do not subtitle or translate at the moment because we are still a little bit new, and besides animation arrives here very late (thanks to the Customs and the Censorship Board).
Meeting times/admission/etc:
We try to have a general meeting every 2 months, and our committee meetings are biweekly. Screenings are generally monthly, but this year we'll be having an AnimeFest in July (school year is July to March). However, much of our activities are constrained by the strict rules here and the not-very-helpful-school-admin.

The organization's tape library is being kept and maintained by Long Le, the current President of the organization (substituting for Hiromi Hasegawa)... Club tapes are checked out to reliable members of the club.
Projects: (Subtitling, translating, etc)
Hiromi Hasegawa, our founder and President on academic leave... has done plenty of translations for the folks on the Internet. These include select episodes of Tenchi Muyou, and the "Special" As for subtitling, we have our sources, but the club doesn't have the facilities for subtitling.
Meeting times/admission/etc:
Currently, our meetings are on Saturdays from 6-9PM... there is speculation of a change to Thursdays. The meeting location is currently Johnson 200 with a theater size projection screen and seats for just over 200 people. If the meetings are changed to Thursdays, we'll still have an LCD Projector, but a smaller location, probably Johnson 101 on the Occidental College Campus. Do e-mail us for updates...
Affiliation:
Koko wa Anime is affiliated with all of the clubs in Ikkoku-kan, including the Anime Clubs and Societies at Caltech, UCLA, and USC. However, these clubs are all independent organizations and should not be associated in an over-lapping manner.
Organization History:
This Club, originally named the Occidental College Anime Club, was founded by Hiromi Hasegawa in the Spring of 1993. It has grown since... but has changed hands as far as administrative staff... this is due solely to Hiromi's diverted attention towards her Senior Thesis (if she doesn't do it, she'll be stuck for good...) Currently, the club is being run by myself, and Hiromi's reliable substitute, Long Le.

Poor Otaku Productions -- An utterly stupid attempt at writing anime fanfiction. Work in progress includes Anime Park, and Bubblegum Trek: The Ranma Factor. (A tentative project is an H BGC story.)
NJAA has tried a little subbing; We've attempted to sub various episodes of Sailor Moon and Ranma, but we weren't very pleased at the results. [That's an understatement...] Our Ranma subbing was canceled because of Viz getting the rights to Ranma.
We've also tried doing instructions and walk-throughs for Japanese video games on the Super Famicom. (We haven't made it far enough into Final Fantasy 5, Sazan Eyes, or Fist of the North Star 5 yet...)
Meeting times/admission/etc:
None set. (With such a low amount of members, you can practically meet at each other's houses/dorms/apartments.)

Organization History:
December 17, 1992 -- We all (the members of NJAA, that is) were having a nice dinner at Yaohan's Herochan restaurant after a nice shopping spree at Books Kinokuniya in New York, and at Yaohan. Reiko Kurokawa (yep, she's a member) suggested that we should form an anime club. I countered with the fact that we'd be extremely small, and it wouldn't be worth it. Our friends chimed in, saying it would be a great idea to form a club. So, on January 3rd, all 6 of us gathered at my place, and, well, that was our fi
rst meeting. (Not very exciting, is it?) Everyone decided that we should have a person keeping everything running, so they voted me. (Mostly because of my reluctance to create the club.)

Projects: (Subtitling, translating, etc)
We plan on trying to begin subtitling this semester (Spring 1994). We hope to sub Bastard 1 - 6 and Dragonball Z movies 5 - 7. We have all of these titles from LD source. We also plan to do a club T-shirt in the near future.
Meeting times/admission/etc:
Times which we meet vary, though they typically tend to be once a month on a Wednesday or Thursday from 7 - 11pm. A schedule of a planned meeting will be posted to rec.arts.anime and rec.arts.anime.info as soon before a meeting as is possible. There is no admission to see the showings.
Affiliation:
We are friends with the OTAKU GENERATION of Fresno as well as a few other members of rec.arts.anime and their respective organizations. Furthermore, we are affilated with the Japanese Department and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences of North Carolina State University.
Organization History:
There was a club in the Raleigh area that NCSU allowed the use of resources to. However, we are the first club officially sanctioned by the university itself. The club is now going on its second semester and was started by three individuals: James Holman, Jeff Cornelius, and Max Griffin, all
students at NCSU in the summer of 1993. Our first meeting was early in the fall of 1993 and was a great success. Since then we have become the largest club on campus, surpassing even the oldest and most-established clubs in our attendence. The club exists to further the appreciation of Anime in North Carolina. With the emergence of AnimEigo onto the scene a few years ago, Anime has steadily increaed in popularity here in North Carolina and we want to be able to show as many people as many things as po
ssible without any charge to themselves.

The P.A.C. began in August 1989 in a small library viewing room in Purdue by the gathering of a handful of students. It grew until Feb 90 when the club was able to acquire a permenant meeting place at the Cary Quadrangle Attic Theator at one of Purdue's resident hall. The inner workings began at that time, and by the fall of 1990, P.A.C. became a full fledged activity, Two months later, P.A.C. was recognised by the university as an official student organization. Beginning with an estimated crowds of 20
-25 people/week during its first year of formal operation, P.A.C. has grown exponentially each year to a point where it is averaging 100 attendants each meeting (fall, 1992), and is still growing.
As an Anime club in Purdue, we have a goal of promoting the art of Anime, while at the same time offer free entertainment for all Purdue students and others who joined us. We welcome and encourage potential artists, animators and collectors to display their work and collections.
At the second last week of each of Purdue's fall and spring semester, the P.A.C. features its tradition, the "Animarathon" -- an event which lasts as long as everyone can hold on before the final week examinations.

In spite of all of our ambitious projects, Rutgers Anime is pleased to continue to do what we do
best: Weekly presentations of Japanese Animation. Our current showings at Rutgers University are sponsored by the JCA, who provides free, on-campus meeting space.
