This was the first time I saw it done on TV. Every other time it was on
YouTube.
It took me a little while to clue in as to what was, mostly because I tend
to turn them off when I run into them. I recognized the song but not the
face. I guess I was trying to figure out if they were really doing it. But
it was a funny moment. I guess that should put that mime to rest.

I was also a bit surprised that they not only got the actual Rick
Astley, but that he agreed to do it!

Considering that (a) it's free publicity, (b) millions of people watch
the parade every year, and (c) very, VERY few of them know what a
RickRoll is (even after one of the characters used the term right
after his song), I'm not surprised one bit.

Given that I still can't figure out what the basic *point* of a RR is
supposed to be, beyond the obvious ADD-generation "Look, it is, like, a
one-hit wonder song from the 80's, which is incongruous and campy, don't
you know?" appeal--
(Wikipedia claims that it dates back to some obscure Internet-niche
reference from the 90's, but even that has yet to be cited.)
First time I ever saw a RR was on two separate occasions, when fans
tried RR'ing early YouTube trailers for "Quantum" and "X-Men: Wolverine".
My first reaction was, and I quote verbatim:
"So...it's...supposed to be a joke about his *hair*? 0_o?? "
Derek Janssen (one of those naive souls who believe that OTHER people in
the world use A->B logic and pointed satire in their own humor, just
because he himself does)
