Giant high heels looks dangerous--but I'm guessing about that.

I have a tie for first place -- Kung Fu Panda and WALL-E. They are
both great, but each engaged me in different ways. It's rare
Dreamworks runs neck and neck with Pixar for me, but they did it this
time.

Zip. I hate trailers :-)

Up might not suck, but that's Pixar.

Wall-E [B+]
When it isn't wallowing in sticky-icky "romaance" and overcooked
emotional pantomiming, it's brilliant. Don't let the haters imply
that we fans only liked the first reel: the last two acts are just as
imaginative (and more energetic, to boot). There may have been only
one scene of exposition in the entire movie. The fans have spoken
their mind. Now it's time for the skeptics to write a legitimate case
for denying it a Best Picture nomination.

Kung Fu Panda [B]
The chopsocky, dumpling-juggling, bridge-tightroping dance spectacular
was infinitely more fun than the fate-ridden, slapstick-stalling,
fattie-empowering story that framed it

Beyond that, I saw:

Azur et Asmar [B-]
Played for one week only in Washington DC. The characters are ugly as
sin. The camera angles are flat and repetitive. The backgrounds are
inspired. The story is beautifully provocative. It's a children's
bedtime story told with the care and nuance of an intelligent adult.
No one under the age of 12 could possibly grasp its brilliance.

Bolt [C+]
The first 20 minutes are mad fun. Wicked-mad silly ridiculous action
sequences that almost thirll as much as Brad Bird's best. And Miley
Freaking Cyrus?!?! Who knew? If her (admittedly small) role as a Kim
Possible-like heroine was an American-Idol audition, send that kid to
Hollywood. If hell freezes and Heaven crashes into the sea, and a
live-action WITCH film is made on the heels of Twilight's success,
Hannah Montana could play Irma. She's that good... The rest of the
movie is... meh. The lead performances are fine, but the supporting
cast sucks (the agent and network exec... ew). About halfway through,
everyone felt like they were going through the motions. It's
impossible to get excited about this film, in a world with Wall-E.

More later, as I think of them.

Terrence Briggs, found Robotech Chonicles and that Naruto snow movie
in the Redbox vending machine. Brave new world, folks.
Peace to you...

Of the films I saw

"Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" [D]
Worst of 2008. Now I liked "Jonah". So I was disappointed at how downbeat and
humorless "Pirates" turned out.

"Horton Hears a Who" [B]
I'm still dubious about CGI versions of Dr. Seuss characters, or stretching
the stories to film lengths. But this movie at least was entertaining to
watch.

"Kung Fu Panda" [B+]
The splash of vibrant Chinese art and the furry cast made this movie appealing
to me.

"WALL-E" [A-]
The best so far, but not really Pixar's best. Still, the movie had the most
optimistic vision of the post apocalypse in film history, not to mention one of
the movies' most lovable romances.

"Space Chimps" [C-]
Just mediocre instead of the bad that it looked in the trailer. The design
for the alien world had some bubblegum appeal. I'd call this a kids only
movie, but really you can get a better movie for your kids.

"Fly Me to the Moon" [C-]
See "Space Chimps". A breathtaking version of the Moon landscape and actually
decent character designs for CGI humans keep this movie from being totally
sucky.

"Star Wars: the Clone Wars" [D]
Now this IS totally sucky. :-) An endless poorly animated battle scene that I
didn't give a darn about. Asuka Tano rivals JarJar Binks in lameness.

"Igor" [B]
My guilty pleasure. Most people didn't like this movie. But I really got into
the movie's morbid sense of humor.

"Azur and Asmar" [B+]
An uplifting vision of cultural openmindedness, and one of the most gorgeously
designed movies you'll ever see. If only Ocelot hadn't used hideous poser
characters for the humans. :-P

"Fear(s) of the Dark" [B]
Beautiful black and white artwork. But I wasn't scared...

"Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" [C-]
My biggest disappointment. I really enjoyed the original "Madagascar". But
we wound up with a pointless sequel, so devoid of plot that it struggled to
find something interesting for each character to do.

"Bolt" [B+]
Surprisingly good. While the films central conceit was convoluted, the
characters carried the movie. The pet-master bond between Bolt and Penny and
the emphasis on animal mannerisms gave the cast members charm.

"Delgo" [C-]
A premise about two societies fighting over resources that could've made for a
decent scifi movie got suffocated by abyssmal character designs and unendurably
bad comic relief.

I'm catching "The Tale of Despeareaux" tomorrow, and I'm waiting for
"Waltz with Bashir" to reach Asheville.

Kung-Fu Panda or WALL-E? WALL-E or KFP?

Both are fantastic. PIXAR did slightly beter animation but Panda is
such a great story.

Bolt. :-)

Joking aside, for the best among the noms I'd probably pick "WALL-E". But
"Bolt" shouldn't be forgotten. For a movie that seemed so unpromising it
actually turned out to be very endearing.

You forgot Clone Wars. There may have been more animated movie in 2008, but
I can't remember them.
