Hi..

I'm interested in setting up a marine tank. I had a tropical one for
many years, then sold it (doh!), and now I want a marine one because I
love marine fish (especially anemone fish)

I checked out the ftp archive and there was a lot of info there but I
couldn't find a file on 'How to setup a marine aquarium'. I was hoping
someone could answer the following questions:

How do you make the salt water?
How to you monitor the salt concentration? (Hydrometer?)
What special filtering arrangements do you need?
What temperature are most tropical marine species kept in?

Any help would be much appreciated. I think it will work out too
expensive for me, but oh well :(

thanks

Russell

Mix in a separate clean 5 gallon bucket.

Hydrometer. The plastic ones that use a needle are best. I forget who
makes them but I believe it is the same people who make Instant Ocean
Salt.

: What special filtering arrangements do you need?

Wet dry or Berlin system work best IMO.

: What temperature are most tropical marine species kept in?

78 F

Yeah, but we're all in over our heads expense wise. That's what
hobbies are for right? ;)

Jeff, I'm curious as to why yo feel the plastic needle hydrometers are
better than a glass miniscus (sp?) one? Thanks.

They are made by SeaTest, and they are much easier to read, if nothing else ...

I don't. A simple case of engaging the fingers on the keyboard before
considering all the types out there. I should have probably said that I
prefer the plastic ones made by Aquarium systems (SeaTest) to the ones
that float a glass thermometer type device in the water since the
SeaTest ones are easier to read IMHO. I have absolutely no
experience with the glass meniscus ones you mention.

Sorry for misleading the group. I'll be more careful with my wording
next time.

A serious problem with the floating glass type is that the piece of paper
inside can slip and give a totally inaccurate reading. I remember reading
this experience from someone on the net and I have always verified my
salinity with the seaTesT one.
