Summary of the January, 1990 issue of Freshwater and Marine Aquarium,
in order of appearance. I placed asterisks next to articles which
I found particularly interesting.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Editorial: Dennis Hough briefly recaps the problem spots
in the world where fish are being wiped out
because of human mismanagement, e.g. the
coral reefs in the Phillipines.
** Ultraviolet Light in the Marine Reef Aquarium:
An in-depth article on the bad effects of different
UV frequencies and on how you can design your reef
to minimize the damage. The author also gives us
a measure of the UV light emissions of several
commonly used lights.
Mystery Fish: The goatee blenny
Bettas: A look at the amazing jumping prowess of members of
the genus Betta.
Those Rascals of the Sea: Dangerous fish and inverts.
The Finding of a Previously Unknown Fish Pathogen in the
Symphysodon sp. (Discus): A technical article
on the "discus disease".
Rare and Unusual Marines: The Midas Blenny
Aquatic Environments: Instructions and diagrams on how to
cheaply build and maintain a system of holding
tanks using plastic trash cans and PVC tubing.
Fishy Trivia: Lots of good trivia & anecdotes.
Guppies to Groupers: Catfish trivia.
** Splashing around with Sally: Very weird article. The author
assembled a collection of quotes from old and new
fish books. Some of the quotes seem so obviously
wrong that they must have come from a really *old*
book. Other quotes sound like perfectly
reasonable, common sense advice. And sometimes
I can't tell the difference, which is why I
thought this article seemed strange.
Live Foods: Raising earthworms
If I Had Only Known: An article warning us about the bad
outcome of dumping scads of medications and
water conditioners into our tanks without having
the slightest idea of how the interactions
between these chemicals will affect our fish.
Collecting Water Plants in South America: The variability
and localities of Echinodorus paniculatus.
Naturalist on the Outermost Island: Aquatic life off the Bahamas
Venomous and Potentially Dangerous Marine Animals: The Cnidarians
Marine Fish and Invertebrate Nutrition:
Surgeonfish and Damselfish
Book Review of "The Aquarium Fish Survival Manual"
** The Wet/Dry Filter...four years after: An overview of how
trickle filters work and an evaluation of the
effectiveness of different gadgets and filter
media.
The Piscatorial Verbiphile: A guide to pronouncing all those
tricky Latin names for cichlids.
The Orlando IBC Betta Show.
Plants and the African Cichlid Aquarium: Mediocre
recommendations on plants to use with African
cichlids.
For What It's Worth: Instructions on how to
1) Clean detritus from underneath UG filter plates
2) A filtration system for a small aqua-terrarium.
3) A [BIG] air compressor for your fish room
4) adding aeration to power filters.
5) specialized fish feeder and trap.
