There is a couple of ways you can do this. You can just let it sit in
a pot of HOT water for a few hours and that will leach out quit a bit. You can
also boil it in a pot of water and lemon juice. How much lemon
juice is up to you.
Activated carbon willl do the trick as will your regular water
changes :)
I would not use chlorine bleach, as it might carry over into the
aquarium.

Whatever you do, do NOT use bleach. Chlorine is totally horrible, and
wood is porous enough that you may not get all of the tanic acid out.
Besides, I am not sure it will work.
I am at this moment boiling two pieces of wood in a large pot on my
stove. They've been boling for about 20 minutes. They are so long
that I have to turn them up-side down halfway inbetween.
The fish people at the pet store recommended that I do this about
10-15 times. Another of their recommendations is to put it in a
bucket of water outside for about three weeks. I plan to do both,
because the type of wood I have contains a great amount of tanic acid.
