I don't mind a one time mess message as long as it pertains to something I'm
interested in, I have fresh water tanks so i deleted it...

If there is one thing I hate, it's SPAM, however, I thought this was rather
interesting, so I replied to the messenger with a request for more
information. I'll let you know what information I get.

I guess I don't mind this type of SPAM, however, by responding to it, I'm
encouraging the use of SPAM aimed at fellow news-group members. Next time
I'll think twice about replying to SPAM.

I recieved the same. My thought is if I'm looking for something I'll find it
and if someone else finds me, I usually ignore it, because they are
obviously not doing their work if I can't find them.

I have a standing personal policy of NEVER doing business with spammers. At
one time I would reply to tell them that but gave it up as useless. Perhaps,
if we all did it, it might do some good in this one particular case? Just in
case they do have a real product, they could be convinced to find a better way
to reach potential customers.

Contradiction? I guess it depends on the level of "training" and the
definition of "direct."

Well, I dont consider it spam if it is on topic, and it is. I dont mind
getting mail when its about something I am interested in. Off topic spam is
another story, no excuse. I have added them to my list of information
sources. Seem that their main export is Tang and trigger food.

BTW, they plainly state in the message that they will not email again unless
you request more information. Very polite and professional.

Aust. import laws for fish/animals are sooo strict that
it would be easier to get a "nuke" through customs :)

I still dont understand what is so wrong about what they did. I could see
if they sent you a mail along the lines of, "Buy our video learning
tapes..." or something like that, but the mail I got was SO on topic that
the word "spam" didnt even cross my mind.

Definition of Spam: any unsolicited commercial email. This definition
is usually expanded to include commercial emails sent to inappropriate
Usenet groups as well.

They obviously just used a bot to suck up all the addresses of posters
to the aquaria groups and mass-emailed them this advertisement.
Fortunately for me, I anti-spam my address, so I didn't get it. You
actually have to look in the reply-to header to see my real address,
which seems to foil the bots. You guys who got this email, and
weren't happy with that fact, should try it.

See ya,

I don't think so. You'll probably want to keep your "reply-to"
address as the real one, so if someone just hits reply to email you,
then it'll go to your real address. Also, there are some systems that
will reject emails as spam automatically if the "reply-to" address
doesn't jive with the real domain the mail came from. I found that
out the hard way a couple years ago. I'd been wondering why so many
of my emails to people from the group were never answered. I found
out from my own network admin that that was probably the problem. I'm
not sure if that is still happening, but it doesn't seem so.

I use Agent for my news reader, and I changed my main email address
within that program. That's the address that shows up on the groups
as my "from" address and is picked up by bots. There's probably a
similar way to set it within whatever program you're using.

Spam-bots will grab email addresses from the Reply-To, the From, and
the body of the email.

And, if you've ever posted without having your email addresses
mangled, it's not worth doing, since your address will have been
grabbed already anyway. If you put your live email address anywhere
(from, reply-to, or in the body), it will get found.

I personally don't worry about the spam. Many decent mail programs
have filters you can set to, to direct most of the spam directly to
the trash. I end up seeing maybe 1 spam a day, with 4 or 5 a day
going into my trash.

Hi nos-matt

I have just been on to see your reefpage, you have some beautiful corals. I
have only had marines just over a year and before I changed over tanks (I
have a 20 gallon Hex) I actually got rid of a 3ft x 18 x 12 because the old
one took up too much room. Although this tank looks beautiful, I thought I
would have marine fish only, but found myself getting corals, but do not
have much floor area.

How many tanks do you have?

How long have you had marine tanks. Your tank is great!

ju...@sanderson2000.worldonline.co.uk

How do you do your water changes with a 60 gallon.
