Hey everyone,
8 months ago I put a sea cucumber in my 110g tank. I rarely see it. Last
week I noticed it climbing up the back of the tank. I thought that was
kind of odd. the next day I noticed it wasn't there I assumed it was back
playing in my live rock.
Today I happened to notice something in the bottom of my overflow box.
Yep, you guessed it, the sea cucumber.
I took it out. it was shrunk up and hard as a rock. I put it in a small
bucket with some of salt water and it seemed to expand and get soft.
Is this thing dead or dying? I know that a cucumber death can ruin a tank.
I don't want to chance a catastrophe over a cheap cucumber, however even
cucumbers deserve a chance to live.
Any help would be great,
Jeff

Update for all of you holding your breath on the health of my sea cucumber:
It has started moving around the bucket, it went to the top of the water
line and hung out.
Think its safe to put back in tank?
Jeff

Jeff,

There are many types of cukes. Some that hang out on the sand bed and others
that like to hang out at the top of the tank or in rocks. I have both. They
will shrink up, expand, get long and skinny, you name it. Mine did the same
thing yours did. The ones that hang out in rocks will feed at night with
what looks like a group of polyps coming out at one end. They are not sand
sifters like the ones that hang out in sand beds.
