In response to a post about many redundant questions on this newsgroup,
Craig Bingman stated that this is largely a beginner's newsgroup. In my
quest for more and more information I was wondering if there are other
newsgroups or forums available that have more advanced content about
marine reefs.

Maybe an advanced newsgroup should be formed. I wonder how someone would
form a new newsgroup? Does anyone know?

In order for it to work someone would have to moderate it and remove any
questions that aren't deemed "advance". The line between newbie and expert
doesn't exist, however.

It is largely for beginners, but there are some true experts around.
Throw out your questions, they'll probably get answered.

However, it sounds as if you're interested in studying reefs in
nature. The focus of this newsgroup is more of keeping them in a glass
box. While that does entail a little knowledge about reefs in nature,
it's not the best place for you to look for info if you're not talking
about a captive reef. : )

That's true. Even if it is monotonous to see the same questions over and
over again. It really doesn't bother me, I soak up any and all the info.

A good coral zoology book and research journals ... just to name a couple.

I think folks are making too big a deal out of this . .this is a
newsgroup for all levels . . .

Dan,

As one of the people that was around when rec.aquaria was
reorged to rec.aquaria.*, forming new newsgroups is not a trival
process. Especicially when it comes to *this* newsgroup. This
particular group carries a lot of baggage, primarily from when it
was originally formed.

I highly recommend 'dealing' with the noise and seeking
out what interests you.

p.s.,
I think Erik Olson chronicled the process it took to get
here. If not, Dustin did. Poke around near the FAQ; the info
should be there somewhere. http://faq.thekrib.com/

I haven't found other newsgroups
that are more advanced. But there are
some very knowledgeable people helping
in this newsgroup. You just need to be
patient with the newbies.
And help some of them if you can.

Agree, and NO ONE is an expert in everything! The so-called experts is
this hobby change their minds from year to year and often
contradict/slam one another. A doctorate in marine biology doesn't
simply make you an expert in the marine aquarium hobby. It's a hobby!
I know a lot about the hobby but have never kept a Lionfish because I
don't like them. For opinions on those, you'll have to seek advice from
a hobbyist who loves and keeps them. Keep the newsgroup the way it is.

Functionally, it works out that way. A number of the more advanced folks
have left the newsgroup, partially because they were being spammed to
death. People also get tired of answering the same old questions, so
some tune out. Some undoubtedly get tired of the personalities.

The newsgroup can be as advanced as anyone wants it to be, I suppose. I
don't have a great deal of perspective on these issues anymore.

I think that beginners benefit the most from this newsgroup but I feel
everyone gets something new out of it all the time. I can't tell you how
many times I have fallen out of my chair laughing at some of these posts.

I suppose after that many late nights staring at the tank, filled with
alcohol and aromatic hydrocarbons, these things all start to blend
together. : )
