the "hobby markup." The lamps we use aren't made for aquariums - do you
think these companies want to develop a product that sells at best a few
thousand units per year? The lamps we use were developed for other
applications (like architectural lighting) and we have adapted them to ours.
I get my 10000K lamp for $62 at a local lighting supply store in Philly. The
same lamp is relabeled by Aqualine Buschke and sold for $100 in a aquarium
stores... just my $.02. - john.

Hey John,
I figured the same thing. I contacted all my local lighting
suppliers and asked for any lamp over 6000K. In the end nobody was
able to provide me with anything over 5000K. I even suggested
manufacturer names to them. So what's your secret? Who manufactures
the bulb you use?

Please let every one know of the source, catalog number or model number of the
lights you buy. We may not have the same Co. in our area but if you could give us a
model number and a mfg it would surely help!
Or is this just your way of rubbing our nose in it<G>?

the suppliers are in your area - most suppliers don't stock these lamps but
will order the lamp for you. It may help to get the exact product number
from Ushio before you order it from you local supplier. Ushio makes an
entire line of 10000K HQI, medium, and mogul base lamps from 75-1000W. -

Ushio is one of the worlds largest manufacturers of lamps of all types. Your
local store may not have the 10000K line of lamps in stock but they should
be able to order one for you. They make a 75, 150, 175, 250, 400, and 1000W
versions of the same lamp. The smaller lamps are HQI (double ended) and 175
and up are medium and mogul base type - I think you can get the 175 in an
HQI format too. I use a 150W HQI lamp; this is the same lamp used in
Geissman and Aqualine hoods that cost thousands. I drive my lamp using a
prototype Icecap ballast designed specifically for use with this Ushio lamp.
The combination is spectacular. - john.
