I have recently, two weeks ago, moved to the Virginia area and am having
some problems finding an established place that's reputable,
knowledgeable, etc... in the marine and reef areas.

I came from Illinois where I had dealt with one store for five years in
which guaranteed their fish for thirty days after purchase. This was due
to their policy of testing your water prior to them selling you a fish but
I found that there were less overall problems this way.

I have been to a number of Virginia businesses and was not very satisfied
with either their knowledge nor their service (personality). I have been
told, by a pet store salesman, that I should go to Baltimore to find what
I am looking for.

Can anyone suggest a number of businesses within the D.C. area or Virginia
that I may have missed? The only one that I would consider returning to
on a regular basis is Vienna Aquarium & Pets in Vienna. Maybe Wally's In
Alexandria, if I'm desperate but no others.

Thanks

THERESA

I am currently keeping an archive of store evaluations on my homepage
for every city I can find information on. So far I have:

/Fish/Stores/SanFran/marine
/Fish/Stores/Chicago/marine
/Fish/Stores/Tallahassee/marine
/Fish/Stores/Houston/marine
/Fish/Stores/Dallas/marine
/Fish/Stores/Boston/marine
/Fish/Stores/St.Louis/marine
/Fish/Stores/Indianapolis/marine
/Fish/Stores/Phoenix/marine
/Fish/Stores/LosAngeles/marine
/Fish/Stores/LasVegas/marine
/Fish/Stores/SanAntonio/marine
/Fish/Stores/Seattle/marine
/Fish/Stores/Randalstown.md/marine
/Fish/Stores/DC/marine

So please keep them coming (post or email is fine) and hopefully this
can grow to be an even better resource.

In the Orange Co. area (just south of L.A.), besides Tong's (which you
already have), my regular haunts include:

H2O Tropicals
27071 Cabot Rd, Suite 123
Laguna Hills, CA 92653
(714) 348 2855

Just off the 5 between Oso Pkwy and Crown Valley offramps.
H2O is a saltwater only store, with a special interest in reef
and stoney corals (esp. Acropora). If you're in the area, it's
worth stopping in just to see their display tank (600 gal?). They
have good European contacts and make an effort to bring in European
technologies. They also seem to have contacts with collectors in
at least Fiji and Indonesia. Also a good place to see various MH
bulbs at different wattages and color temperatures in action.

and:

Petown
23815 El Toro Rd.
Lake Forest, CA
(714) 586 6430

Just off the 5 at El Toro and Rockview, behind the Spoons restaurant,
with a giant birdcage out front. A complete pet store, with a good
selection of fresh water, salt water, and reef critters and equipment.

also:

'Tis Tropical Fish
16179 Brookhurst
Fountain Valley
(714) 839 0910

I mostly stop by here looking for plumbing fittings that are peculiar
to aquariums, that hardware stores don't seem to have. I've never
been too impressed with their reef livestock. They also have a very
good book selection. Low end reef support equipment. Pond equipment.
Will autopsy fish, do water analysis.

Go to the Aquarium Center in Randallstown, Maryland. It is worth the
trip. If you need the address, e-mail me.

Two places I would suggest (based on where you live exactly). The
Marine Scene in Herndon and Exotic Aquatics in Springfield. TMS is the best
store I have seen in a long time. EA leaves somewhat to be desired at times,
but it is a lot better than Walley's (all the time)! Also, check out the
Aquarium Center. Quite a haul, but worth IMHO.

Walking under light after light in the night in the streets in the suburbs...
sounds reach my ears as yawning lawns settle for sleep.
In the glow of a lamppost alive with the dance of the glass-tapping beetles and
moths, I see the number...
As I uncurl the page that I tore from the telephone book, I'm growing number.
Not a moment for a second look; I'm growing number.

It would be good if *all* stores operated like this.

Yes, Aquarium Center is probably worth the trip. It is 40 minutes north
of Baltimore City if you are coming up 95 North from DC. A bit of a haul
from VA. It is generally packed with people on Sat. and Sun. If it were
me I would go on a weekday. I have shopped all over the Baltimore area
and AC has the cleanest setup I've visited and staff for the most part is
knowledgeable though I've been frustrated on occasion. I don't reccomend
wasting your time w/ any of the other shops in Balt.--a few are actually
depressing to go into--I hate looking at dying fish and dirty tanks and
liverock that has had little attention paid to it. Good Luck.

Out of curiosity, what's your page's address? Thanks.
