Well.

Heh.

I've got nothing but admiration for you RO/DI folk. Worked away at it
all weekend with the RO/DI, barely kept up with the topoff water for
evaporation. Managed to launder pretty much everything in the house
with the waste water (including the now rainwater-soft dogs LOL), never
did get enough water for a water change....

Ordered some more TWP refills tonite.... so that I might ever do a water
change again...I must sleep.....rest.....more RO/DI tomorrow....

Hmm, you will need a storage tank, Deb, a spare 75 gal will do fine

HAA!! I just got one Friday as well. Took most of Saturday and part of
Sunday to get 40 gallons out of it. Come to find out the membrane isn't as
"productive" with water less than 70 degrees (That is the temp of the water
they rate the flow with).

I'm going to have to rig up a large reservoir container with a float
valve so I can at least be a bit ahead of the game...........

And what would be the temp of the water out of the Canadian (gold medal)
tap ? 12C - that's a lot lower than 70. Should I run it with warm
water then ?

Storage....Storage....lol for what, the waste water?

My tank is evaporating quicker than I can produce the good water ;-)

Deb, I'd say you have a hole in your tank or your RO unit is just a
bit too small. Mine is a basic 25g/day and does just that. What type
of unit are you using?

No, it's 75gpd Brad. It's not running into the tank..we've just been
dealing with the huge amount of waste water, which is something new to
us. We are used to hooking up the TWP, setting a timer (YES, after a
flood or two) and relaxing.

Tried to run waste water into the washing machine...two loads later, and
I have enough RO for the tank. Way too much work right now. Have to
perfect this. LOL.

You can purchase a simple mixing valve from any plumbing supply house.
You will need to connect your hot and cold to it. Only one line exit
it for your ro/di unit. Most have a knob you set for 70 degrees or
were ever you want. If the problem is water temp, this will correct
your problem.

Call me bad, but my waste water goes down the drain. I run my unit
once a week and have enough water for the tank and drinking.

That will only work if you're running the hot water all the time. It's like running the hot water at
the sink you have to let it run for a minute to get the hot water from the water heater. Just a
thought.

I think that she is running the RO/DI and wondering where to put the waste
water. She said in an earlier post that she had two loads of cloths she
washed. The washer can only hold say maybe 20gal that means she only made
5 gals of RO/DI water with 20 gal waste. I think this is at the 70 degree
temp. 1gal good to 4 gal waste. I run mine down the drain. I have a well
and don't pay for water. I hope this is what you are talking about. I am
sorry if it isn't.

If you can figure out how to rig up a stable way of introducing a bit
warmer water into the unit, it will more than likely increase your "clean"
water output. I'm guessing the membranes in these things clench up much the
same way you would if you took a flying leap into a pool of fresh run tap
water!!!

Since I'm just hooking mine up right now to a garden hose, I just lay
the majority of the hose across the driveway in a vain attempt at getting
the sun and the cement to get the tap water a bit warmer.

I'm thinking my wife would throttle me the first time she had to take a
cold shower because I was using all the warm water for my RO/DI
unit.............Just a guess..........

Actually, it would depend on WHERE you install the mixing valve. The
reason you have to run the hot water a bit before you get any that's hot, is
due to the length of pipe between the faucet and the hot water heater. If
you have 30 feet of pipe between the two, you've got to wait on 30 feet of
cold water to come through before the hot............... If you installed
the valve beside the hot water heater, no waiting!!!!

A pressure pump might help.
I have a 75gpd unit that used to only do about 5 gal per day with heaps of waste
but since
I moved house, to a place wit much better pressure, I get about 50 gpd and the
waste is not too much more (mine goes into the garden).

Yeah, I was just basically frustrated by trying to use all that waste
water. We pay for our water, btw. Also, we just attached the RO/DI unit
to the cold water outlet for the washer. So, I'd have to stop the unit,
hook up the washer again, do a load of laundry, before I could get going
again. As I say, I did a lot of laundry to get five g of good water
RO/DI...lol. It was just nuts.

That's about my evap - 4 or 5g per day btw.

Thanks everyone - we'll try some of the suggestions here, maybe think
about moving the unit somewhere else to make things easier. I need
better, longer hoses too.

The pressure goes to about 42 as soon as I turn on the faucet. Doesn't
seem to go any higher even if I turn on the faucet full blast. As far
as the membrane, it's whatever comes with Reef Pure ? I probably need
that pump to increase pressure or whatever too..? <big sigh>

I realize that the closer to the hot water source, the quicker the hot water,
thats only common sense. It was just a thought to be considered. Don't know
WHERE the ro/di unit is now...... But if it isnt mounted near the hot water
source NOW then it won't help to run hot water to it.

Hi,

Forget the RO/DI unit. I live were one has to haul the water. I can only
use about 1000 gal / month. I use a particulate and a carbon filter
followed by KATI and ANI resion columns. I get two gal per hour with no
waste water. The resin columns are easily regenerated. Unless your water
is heavily polluted by either agi or industrial waste the final water is of
excellent quality.

hi.
The keyword here is "supposed." Permeate pump is only good for increasing
RO yield if the RO water is going into a pressurized vessle. In Deb's case,
it is not the case (right, Deb?). So the pump will do nothing but set her
back $75.

This is correct.
But I would say that if you do have a pressurized storage tank that the
permeate pump works quite well. For those of you that don't know how it
works, it is a turbo charger for your RO system. It uses the waste water
to remove the pressure from the product line going to your storage tank.
This leaves the maximum amount of pressure across the membrane....

Hey Deb, I was in Home Depot (Not sure what the Canadian version of Home
Depot is, but it's worth a try) and found a hose assembly in the washing
machine parts "pile" It has connections for hot and cold that come together
into one outlet. I picked one of these up as well as 2 "Y" fittings for the
faucets. Connected it all together in my laundry room and hooked the output
up to my 60 GPD RO/DI that was giving me maybe 20 GPD with my frigid tap
water. I adjusted the valves to give me slightly warm water into the RO/DI
unit and as a test and I was consistently filling up 1 gallon jugs in just
under 20 minutes with clean RO/DI water.......... That's 72 GPD.... Just a
tad bit of a difference than before!!!!!

It was a 15 dollar shot in the dark that in my opinion, paid off for
me..........

Now all I have to do is rig up a storage container with a float valve, set
the valves for the desired temp, and I'm set...........

Give it a shot, see if it helps....................

Just in case you were wondering, I recently got my hands on a Kent
Marine HI-S Maxima RO/DI 60 GPD unit. A buddy of mine wasn't real happy with
the slow output (Hindsight tells me he was running cold tap as well), and
picked up one of the 100 GPD units off of E-Bay Jimmy had mentioned.

Since the unit was a freebie for me, I was more than happy to
experiment!!!

(Had to tell somebody, the Wife just doesn't get my excitement)

LOL ... Just dont forget, while water temp does play a major factor on
output, the colder the water the lesser the output. It also means the colder
the water, the cleaner the output. RO membrane will break down at a certain
temp and just allow every garbage to pass thru.

Sould I be concerned about the output of my unit? Could there be a hole
in my embrane? My 75GPD RO/DI unit filled my 200 gallon aquarium (with 4"
sand bed) in 36 hours. Calculations say that I should only have 115 gallons
by now. The cold tap water was at about 60F, but pressure was at 85psi.
Also, the DI resin hasn't changed color at all, even after filling the
200 gallon aquarium, and a couple of water changes in my 29. Could that be
due to the water softener? The water softener is a "smart" one - you
program in the hardness and it tracks water usage. However the flow through
the RO unit isn't enough for it to pick up, so I manually re-charged the
softener the night before I started filling the tank.

All depends ... This whole 75 GPD isnt carved in stone. It is just a
measured output of the RO membrane under a set condition.

The cold tap water was at about 60F, but pressure was at 85psi.

And what you are saying is one of the factors which improves the output. My
understanding is soft water has less solids to filter out, so it will make
the membrane last longer. Higher PSI also improves output.

Your high PSI and soft water conditions fits the condition ... As for the
DI, I believe it is good for 400~600G ... so ...

Gary,

I would run a few water tests on the output.
TDS, phosphate, copper, calcium (freshwater if you have one), nitrate, etc. Just
to be on the safe side.

Jimmy is correct. High pressure and soft water will increase output but I am
skeptical of a unit that produces more than it is rated for.

One exception is that someone has replaced the original RO membrane with a
higher capacity cartridge.

There isn't very much lighting where I have my unit installed, so I got
a flashlight, and under a bright light, I could see that the bottom 1" or so
of media had changed colors. However, this change is not obvious without
the flashlight. So, I think everything is working as it should.
