What are the best marine biology schools (at PhD level) in the
United States? I understand that the Scripps Institute of Oceanography
(at UC San Diego) is excellent--any other suggestions? I'm particularly
interested marine biotechnology (chemical isolation from various marine
organisms for medical/industrial uses, genetic modification of marine
creatures for bioremediation, etc). Is the University of Hawaii,
University of Miami, or FSU known for the quality of their programs? Any
help/advice would be appreciated.

PS--Where is "Woodhole" department (Boston?)

Woodshole is an Oceanography Institute on Cape Cod (MA) that caters to
many different areas of research. It is not a school by itself, instead
it shares its resources with many schools such as BU (my alma mater),
MIT, Harvard, and others. It seems to be an incredible acedemic
environment from what I have read. You can get more info at:

In terms of size and diversity of program, UF does not
have a particularly large marine science program, and I don't
believe that they operate a separate facility on the ocean or
Gulf (don't shoot me if I'm wrong). Gainesville is right
in the middle of the peninsula.
The University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and
Atmospheric Science is the largest program in the state, with a strong and
diverse faculty. UM is a private school, so the largest
publically-supported school program is at the University of South Florida --
St. Petersburg. USF-St. Pete recently expanded into a big new
facility built jointly with the Florida Dept. of Environmental
Protection (formerly DNR), and are also affiliated with the nearby
USGS Center for Coastal Geology. USF does not have as many faculty
members as Rosenstiel, but they're very high quality and work
together on joint projects particularly well.
Florida State is a smaller program, but absolutely outstanding in the
fields of ocean meteorology, climatology, atmospheric/ocean interactions, and
ocean modeling, including supercomputer applications (GCMs).

I don't want to slight anyone, but I know the most about USF's
program since I graduated from there in 1988 and they've grown some
since then.

Dr Robert Ballard, the guy who discovered the Titanic and the Bismarck,
works for these guys.

Hawaii has Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) contact Dr Varis Grundmanis,
(Assistant Dean for Natural Sciences, Director of Marine Sciences
Program, Associate Professor of Oceanography)
He's a nice guy who is always willing to help.

Also in Hawaii there's the School of Ocean and Earth Science Technology
(SOEST). They offer post grad courses I think.

Check out the second paragraph: Graduate Ocean Policy Certificate
Program.
