My husband and I just set up a 25 gallon marine aquarium with 29
pounds of live rock about 3 weeks ago. We've had good luck so
far. We've added a dozen snails and a dozen crabs a week a part,
also a sea cucumber and a small anemone, and last weekend added 3
shrimp. Everyone is doing well so far. In about two weeks we'll
be ready for some fish! Any advice on which fish would be good
"first fish" for newbies. Kids would love interesting looking
fish; mom and dad would like hardy ones. Any advice would be
appreciated.

My first fish that survived was a yellow tank. I had real bad luck with
clownfish. I think most important is to start real slow. Add one fish and
only one for at least a month. Another thing that I think really helps when
introducing a new fish is to slowly mix some of your tank water with the
water in the fish baggy. I add a little tank water every few minutes while
floating the bag and then net the fish (so as to not get the store water
mixed with mine) and dump him in.

When my kids' friends come over, it's the plain old anemonefish they always
like the best. They're easy, they're often captive-bred, they're relatively
cheap, and they're really pretty.

Our first fish were a 6 Line Wrasse and an
Engineer Goby. Both did very well and are
very different and interesting fish. The
Goby had an unfortunate accident with our
overflow but the Wrasse is still doing very
well 9 months later. By the way, if you are
considering an engineer, be aware that they
do like to burrow so be sure to have your rock
structure very stable and not sitting on the
Substrate (that is if you have rock and substrate.)

Good Luck
Mike

If you rub your eyes, sometimes the white spots go away, other times I
use windex. washing your car now and then also helps, especially when
them white spots appear on your windshield. just letting it all hang
out! defL

Hi
I am quite new to the hobby, but have kept fish all my life.
I have a cleanor shrimp, he was only one inch long when we got her, she
is now 7 months old has a bright red strip with white down her back.
really interesting for children, so far it has shed it skin as it grows
every 4 weeks, and last week it had eggs, I did not notice them but my
son did, so that;s how I know it is a female. It also jumps on to fish,
and cleans them of white spot, and any other parasites that the fish
get. It also feeds from my hand. they say it is very hardy.
well good luck

DL, I have come to the considered conclusion that you are completely
potty and should be committed to a padded and soundproofed aquarium :P

Get a bi-color blenny. Cute little fish that is quite active. Makes little
caves under shells. Mine is constantly swimming into and out off his several
hidouts. He is particularly cute when he is inside a snail shell with his
head sticking out.

Try tank-raised percula clowns. They are a few bucks more than the wild
caught (about $2-3/fish more, from my experience), but much hardier in a
captive setting. They are fun to watch, and will stay out in the open.
I would avoid the clownfish host anemones, however, until you've gotten
some experience under your belt (the clowns will do fine without the
anemones). Royal grammas are also very nice, and 1 should do fine with
a pair of clownfish.

Best of luck!
Bill
