I'm hoping there is someone out there that is really up on marine
lighting. I'm currently planning to do a conversion to the light hoods I
have. My 55 gal tank uses twin 24 inch hoods, and I'm currently going to
convert the incandescent (ick !) lights to twin 18" fluorescent bulbs,
15W each, in each hood. Is this overkill, or is a single 15W light in
each section enough? All the store bought models are like that. I don't
have a true reef tank, but I do have some Inverts. ( starfish, anenneme,
shrimp, ect. ) that I do want to keep alive. I have heard that there is
never a problem with too much light, but if I really don't need four
bulbs, that would really make the swap easier.
Any and all thoughts are welcome.

Whoa Jim! Did you say anemone? Make sure your talking about atlantic
species, Condylactis, or CurlyQ's. For a pacific anemone you need 10
WATTS PER GALLON of lighting! Thats somewhere around 500 watts NOT 30!

HI:
hummmmm
On a 55gal tank i would expect that maybe 100watts would be minimum to
keep aneomes, and actually probably 200watts might be safer. You can go to
home depot and purchase 2 48"-twin bulb shop lights ($7/ea), and 4 GE
F40DX 6500K bulbs($3/ea). this will give you about 160watts of
light....this is probably borderline
AS far as shrimp, crabs, starfish you don't need really any light, but
when you mention soft corals or anemones then your talking
lighting.4-15watss bulbs won't do anything for you...Now decide if you
really want to keep soft corals or anemones...if you vote againist it then
go w/ 4-15's, if you do want corals then think lighting
