water Readings

As I enter into week 4, this morning in the UK saw me do some more water
tests, after taking people's here advice by adding bits this week to my
tank.
Ammonia sky high now at 4.9 is this my spike?
Nitrite now zero!
I also noticed yesterday that the tank was rather smelly when I opened the
front hatch, but this morning it was 10 times worse is that common with my
now high ammonia reading.
So Peep's where am I in my cycle and am I still on my preset course of
adding some fish next weekend, whadya reckon?
BTW your advice has been very helpful, even though I've read the books and
eat the pie there is no substitute for experience.

You need to add what color that cloudy is.
Is it white or green?

I did a water change and it now has gone but it had a green tinge to it.
Was it algae bloom?

An algae bloom is where you'd have free floating bits of algae in the water,
making the water have a green, pea soup color to it.
White cloudy is a bacteria bloom...the nitrifying bacteria colony starting to
accumulate in numbers.

Sounds like you're just going through a normal cycling period. Keep up with
small weekly water changes. about 10-20% should be fine.
During the cycling process the ammonia levels will rise and fall. Obviously
high is not good for the fish and doing the small, weekly water changes will
keep the ammonia levels from being dangerous during this time.
Once the levels even out, yippy! Cycling is done.
(You still keep the weekly water change schedule though).

Brilliant I feel I'm getting there slowly but surely, I was hoping to add
fish this week but I am in no rush this is the end of week 4 of cycling for
me.
Perhaps some fish next week, I had my ammonia spike over a week ago now I
will check the water again tomorrow to see where I am.

Have patience (I know all to weel it's not easy to do).
This would have been so much easier for you had Marineland not run out of stock
on their wonder product...Bio Spira. That would have made your tank cycled over
night!
I'm talking fill the tank, decorate it, turn the filters on, declor and Bio
Spira...and stock the fish all in the same day.
Miracle product this stuff....they just didn't imagine the demand would far out
weigh the supply.
It took a little while for word to spread about this stuff. Most of the
seasoned hobbyists, myself included at first, doubted it worked at all, as
we've all been duped with the other "cycling" products on the market (they do
NOT work at all. Wrong bacteria in them).
After the seasoned hobbyists started to use it word spread like wildfire and
how it really does work.
The only problem with this product is that the shop owners down't always stock
it properly or at the correct temp (frige, not freezer) and often end up
killing the live bacteria. Being that package is silver, you can't tell if the
product has gone bad until you open it at home.
Hmm...maybe I should email Marineland and suggest a "window" on their packaging
so you can see without opening it up.
The stuff should be a cloudy liquid, not look like chunky debris..similar to
the crud you vacuum up during water changes.

Well I emailed Marineland and explained the problems with the product...that
shops and shippers aren't keep ing the temp right and are killing off the live
bacteria....and how a "window" on the package is really needed, etc....
I'll post a reply if they email me with any info. I did request some feedback
about it, so we'll see.
