The book is called;
"Ecology of the Planted Aquarium"
and is written by Diana Walstad.
Diana was a technical advisor to the Aquatic Gardeners Association.
The book cost's about $20 from amazon.com

The book is full of scientific information about what goes on in a
planted tank, as well as
information the author uses to set up her own tanks.
I have been using her methods in some of my own tanks for over four
months now and am very happy with the results.
These methods can be applied by anyone with no experience and little
expense.

well.
I just want to share my good fortune that I've had using her methods.
I don't have to speak for Diana, as a former advisor to the Aquatic
Gardeners Association, her reputation proceeds her.
I don't know what you have against me or Diana Walstad, or her
methods.
Maybe you just don't like people growing plants differently than you
do or maybe the idea that anyone can grow plants bothers you.
If you have any doubts that this method can work, why don't you look

Actually I got the feeling I wasn't wanted there!
Witch is kind of surprising sense that is suposed to be a plant group.
I get the feeling though that many of the people there are not open to
some of the methods I use, even though I have had great success with
them.
Since I have left, the group is pretty dead, and you have followed me
here, never wanting to loose a chance to flame or harass me.
I really don't understand what it is that bothers you guys so much.
I thought people with no, or bad experience might be more interested
in a simple method for growing plants.
Believe it or not I heard about Diana Walstads book out side the plant
group myself.
Many people that have aquariums, would like to have plants, but have
had bad luck with trying to grow them.
And it has really opened up a new level of aquarium enjoyment for me.
I'm sorry if that bothers you.
I am just going to turn the other check though, because I really am
more interested in talking about growing plants than exchanging
insults.
Hopefully the other people that read this will see you for what you
are.

When I'd my first fish/plant tank 3 yr. ago I used Miracle Glow plants
fertilizer from Home Depot. It cost only about $3 and my plants are striving
like crazy. I changed it back to FO about a year later I still got half
bottle full of unused fertilizer...or should I say half empty?
Let me get to the point. If Diana didn't describe this method in her book
then she isn't good enough, at least for me.

Actually not you. It was your posts! Your presentation makes Walstads
methods *sound* like a scam and that appearence drew the complaints and

If you actually left, how do you know whether or not it's dead? ;-)
Assuming you're referring to rec.aquaria.freshwater.plants, I've been
there for a while now and it doesn't seem particularly dead to me.
I've not noticed any post from you though.... When did you leave?

me for what I am? I am just a guy that likes to keep aquariums. However, this
topic, I feel was beaten to death in the plant group and realy have no desire
to see any more of it. Right wrong or indifferent. News groups are open
discussion forums, it may be fact, or opinion, but it should stay on topic.
This is a cichlid group, folks come here to talk about cichlids.

In stead of Miracle Grow, she uses potting or garden soil.
Which also can be bought at Home Depot.
The atvantage over Miracle Grow and other fertilizers is that the
nutrients are available to the plants through their roots.
That means that there are little nutrients floating around in the
water for algae and bio films (bacteria).
My water is very clear with no surface scum, and what little algae
present is is receding.
I have not added any fertilizers in the four months my tanks have been
up.
