This time I'm asking anyone with advice on how to find out the history of an
artist or painting. I don't want to know the value as it's sentimental value
is higher than any $ amount could ever be. I'd like to know if anyone has even
HEARD of this artist and (more importantly) to see if he has done any other
work.
I'm in no way an art appraiser. All I can say is that the painting is
beautiful (to me). The artist's name is Wm Blackman (his thumbprint is on the
back of the painting next to his repeated signature). Also on the back is
"WB-320A". No year is mentioned that I can see.
The painting is a wonderful seascape, 16 X 20, matted and framed, oil. I
believe the painting was commissioned in the 1960's or 1970's in South Florida.
Like I said, I'd love to know if this artist did more paintings. This is a
project I've been meaning to get to for years and I am finally making a small
attempt.
Any guidance on specific books to look at, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Christina
Hi Christina,
For American artists the first place I always look is a research book entitled
"Who's Who in American art. It will give you a brief synopsis of the artist,
their prefered media, & sales examples. This is assuming of course that the
artist's work has had a public sales record.
Good luck, David
